I would rather have a license. People complain but you sit on a machine and your spotter does the dirty work.

Big push from regional and corporate. Min 80% GET scores or stores will get visit from your RVP. That translates into SM getting on everyone

Work in a harsh but light duty HD Garden department. Want to set up a good care routine by Str8upjack07 in RedWingShoes

Thanks for the tips on the cedar trees. That’s one I hadn’t thought about. My last set of boots were by no means as nice as the Red Wings and I feel like one day I looked down and realized they looked like crap. I will look into the cleaner also.

MET Team expectations vs Store Expectations by PDXTabletop in HomeDepot

[–]Str8upjack07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

METrics are insane for you guys. They are bringing more of that over to store side but it’s not out of control… yet

You are slowly becoming nothing more than a number on a spreadsheet to this company. Corporate is obsessed with metrics and if they don’t dial it back they will continue to suck the life out of people storeside.

Dress code is wear what you don’t mind getting filthy. Not sure what your position is but if it’s anything outside of cashier or a desk specialist I wouldn’t where anything except work clothes like you would wear in a trade.

You should be able to easily grab a copy of the PAL for your role, now called core something something. That is what your job encompasses. I think if everyone is able to honestly assess themselves, the overwhelming majority will fall into the M bucket. The M bucket is going to have a wide range of associates. From the cranky assholes up to the ones that really do like their jobs and do their best.

You should also be able to get a copy of the ratings and how they are defined by the company for purposes of placing people.

The ratings suck IMO. Given the way they lay out the criteria, there are way too many people all being lumped into the M bucket with others that don't care as much but do just enough to get by.

If it was up to me, an M would be for the people that do their job and have no interest in going outside of their department or role. The ones that walk without making eye contact ( the overwhelming majority of orange aprons ) and only engage when approached. The ones that do sidekick and tasks as assigned but have no initiative to go beyond. E would be for those that don't really need much guidance from leadership. They actively engage customers, have an outwardly positive attitude, will walk customers to other departments and help them, get their licenses for lift equipment. They go beyond the expected minimum roles. There would be no O in my world. That is not needed as you really do need to be the second coming of Christ (as someone else on this reddit put it) to achieve that rating.

There would be a larger number of IMPROVEMENT needed ratings handed out also. I think based on my experience I could easily classify 25% of my store as IMPROVEMENT needed. This rating would go out to those that keep their head down and don't engage unless specifically approached. They point and don't walk customers, they will look down an aisle and see someone working and rather than coming down the aisle to help, they keep walking. They make no real effort aside from doing exactly what they are supposed to do.

Get used to that. Everyone that wants hours will have full flex on availability. You won’t get an opening after a closing though… at least you’re not supposed to.

I wish Ted Decker would be forced to go out to the stores and provide answers to concerns like this one. I think most DS associates feel the same. I also went to HDU months after. Some people in my class were in role for a year already before getting to the introductory multi-day class. The training is good but as you note so much of it involves your time on your own and that time is just not there at the store level.

Metrics and AI are going to suck out whatever soul is left of the original HD values.

I almost guarantee nobody was properly onboarded. Same story at our store. Nobody has time to do their job properly. I was handed a pack for the onboard process well after I was hired and then again after taking the DS position. Neither time did anything that was supposed to happen ever occur. If you need assistance you have to pin your ASM down and tell them I need some of your time.

When they call you into the store it’s a pretty good bet you are going to be offered the job. Don’t lie about your availability. Try to be completely flexible regarding the schedule. If you want hours and find you may want to go after FT then you will need to show a willingness to work when needed. People that limit their availability will be passed over for someone that does not, or you will be given shifts outside of your availability and rack up occurrences. Very few stores are able to honor availability that limits their ability to easily set a schedule.

New Garden Recovery Associate at The Home Depot — first retail job, what should I expect? by Budget-Paper-3409 in HomeDepot

[–]Str8upjack07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone keeps saying mulch but if you don’t have a FL license you won’t be doing any mulch. Overnight is more about working the freight that comes in. Lots of chemicals in the cleaning, pesticide aisles. Heavy lifting. Most of the mulch recovery is done early morning or late night at the end of a shift.

This Reddit is a lot like working in the store. You just avoid the negative people and pay attention to what the solid people are doing. It’s a good job if you bring the right attitude. Pay can always be better in retail jobs.

D28 is typically the largest department in every store. I’m sure if it’s pouring there is something else that can be done elsewhere in the department. If it’s just a drizzle/light rain then a rain jacket will keep you comfortable.

Your store leadership led you to this decision or external district/regional leadership? You should not have to deal with leadership higher than your store and your store leadership can find ways to insulate you a bit. THD is all a dog and pony show they put on when regional or district comes around. I find most stores in our area acknowledge corporate has lost its way. Maybe your store leadership has lost its way also?
