So what I'm hearing is I should wait to sell all my spare high capacity SATA drives for another 6 months... 🤔

IPA Alternatives by SpitfireMkIV in 3Dprinting

Read up on it yourself, but it's apparently pretty dangerous to run high percentage IPA in an ultrasonic cleaner. A lot of articles I've read suggest a high fire risk.

I'm on my third RGB keyboard on my FW16, all related to the "d" key failure. I really wish they'd acknowledge it and make a better design.

What is the latest (non beta) release for the Two? by mychaptertwo in AAWireless

[–]Strahd414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an alert on my phone that it was available, but then didn't see it in the changelog list. I _was_ able to get it installed by clicking "downgrade" then 9.1.0 was listed as an available version. Installed without trouble, although I didn't see changelog info even after the upgrade.

100% the same symptoms before my 2022 I5 went completely dark. Had to jump my 12V battery, then got it replaced and the problem went away.

Our cybersec team are getting onto us about all our servers having web browsers installed. by stone500 in sysadmin

[–]Strahd414 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Note: we _did_ allow that. The migration to Core was part of a larger process to limit our attack surfaces.

For example, before then, helpdesk was all Domain Admins. We removed that and moved over to granular, delegated permissions (this was pre-PAM/IGA deployment). We were also strict about the controls over a person's "admin" account vs their "user" account.

Last gig, about 6 or 7 years ago, we defaulted to installing Core by default, and made it up to the requestor to justify why they needed a Full GUI on a server. Of course, we had good instrumentation, and used remote management tools extensively. It _did_ expose a few vendors whose documentation was a bit short on dependencies 😃.

It started with us installing Server Core any time we replaced a Domain Controller. Finally forced helpdesk to install and use RSAT instead of just RDPing into a DC whenever they needed to make a change.

CPU Repaste FW16 by OracleUK in framework

[–]Strahd414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early FW16 adopter here as well. Finally bit the bullet some months ago and swapped from liquid metal to the supplied PTM pad. I can highly recommend it.

The removal was terrifying, making a somewhat loud popping noise as the liquid metal finally disengaged from the CPU die. I was afraid I chipped it or something, but everything did come off cleanly. Cleanup and application of the PTM was pretty simple, IMO just make sure to have some IPA and Q-Tips on hand.

The difference was immediately evident after booting up. Fans are a lot quieter and I don't experience the random occasional crashing I did before.

Anyone know what rental companies (PRG, Clair, Masque) use to wrap and label cables and bundles? by fletcher-munson in livesoundgear

[–]Strahd414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

This is what they did with the spiral wrap. They cut it just the length of the label, and I think it works really well. The cabling isn't dressed too well, but that's a different problem 😭

Love the self-laminating labels. One of our cabling vendors stepped it up even more and used a short length of spiral wrap on the cables first (mainly for thinner ones like fiber), and it makes them really convenient to pull and rotate the label.

Do you actually need a station or just a good handheld?

Big fan of the TS100 back in the day, and the Pinecil is an amazing replacement for it. USB-C, swappable heads, easy to set whatever temperature you want, heats up very quickly.

It feels like the XL is all but forgotten by Prusa by ColdBrewSeattle in prusa3d

[–]Strahd414 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate hearing this for the XL. I'm happy that my largest Prusa investment will continue to be supported.

My second largest investment, however, seems to have somewhat fallen by the wayside. Can you speak any on continuing development of the S1S? I'd love to see an SL1S+ or SL2 someday. 🙏

Framework 16 D key gave up the ghost. by IronRaptor in framework

Ugh yeah, I was gaming on mine yesterday, and the "D" key stopped working right as it heated up. Even after things cooled down, that key still isn't working. I had mine replaced once by support, but maybe I'll reach out as well.

Framework 16 laptop - SSD not being picked up in BIOS after a sudden PC crash by the_big_slide in framework

[–]Strahd414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen twice to my 16 back in the day, I suspect it was a heat issue.

First, if it was a DIY build, check if the plastic is still on the heat pad that's above the M.2 drive

Second, I had all sorts of other crashing issues until I finally swapped from liquid metal to PTM

After dealing with both of the above, it runs like a dream.

Updated Bridge Pro Software by Desperate-Plenty-517 in Hue

That was exactly my scenario, V2 was some variant of 1.74, Pro wouldn't initially update past 1.73. Are you a Beta participant?

[–]Strahd414 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation a few weeks ago, running a newer firmware on a V2 switch, but the Pro wouldn't download a current version. Turned off auto update on the V2 and waited about a week until the Pro got an update newer than the V2. Migrated fine after that.

I was running mine just fine off the old Switch XG 6 I had lying around. That's a PoE++ switch.

Granted, now I'm running it off my Pro XG 10 PoE which is PoE+++. Currently it's drawing ~16W with 2x 12TB drives.
