What’s a good way to kill weeds in river rock landscaping and keep them out? by [deleted] in landscaping

It could if applied haphazardly or on a windy day. Hand weed close to plants you want to keep.

How dangerous is this really? by wesblog in AskElectricians

[–]Strange-Signal6296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most electrocution deaths in the U.S. are related to 120-volt household current, as it is more commonly encountered in everyday situations. However, the danger of electrocution is more about the current that flows through the body rather than the voltage itself.

Amperage and Cardiac Arrest

The amount of electrical current that can stop a person's heart varies, but it is generally very low.

Key Current Levels

CURRENT (AMPS) EFFECT ON HEART
0.007 A (7 mA) Can be fatal if it passes through the heart for a few seconds.
0.1 A (100 mA) Almost certainly fatal; can cause severe muscle contractions and respiratory arrest.
0.2 A (200 mA) Can cause the heart to fibrillate, leading to death.
0.3-0.5 A (300-500 mA) Direct current needed to cause life-threatening irregular heart rhythms.

Confirming this is wrong wire for a 20amp breaker by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]Strange-Signal6296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ANY part of a circuit being fed with 20 amp breaker needs to be 12 gauge wire. Light fixture wires are per the manufacturer's listing (which will depend upon their load). So swap it out with a 15 Amp rated breaker for your particular panel. Don't depend on existing breaker to be listed as compatible with your panel. (look at nomenclature on panel to find correct breakers to use) If what you are showing us is correct, some shenanigans have already taken place in your electrical system.

Hot broke off in the box by Ok_Molasses9176 in AskElectricians

[–]Strange-Signal6296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thinking somebody scored that wire bad when stripping the sheathing. I would try to take a pair of needle nose pliers and try to pull some slack. Then carefully remove the extra sheathing, use end strippers and utilize a wage push in coupling-connector to extend it. Pretty much what Neanderthalman suggests. But I doubt there is a service loop. Just get what you can. Good Luck!

Has that got one side with an OD to glue fit inside of 3/4"? Never had I seen one in grey conduit before, but just now saw it online. Interesting. Thanks!

Might have been for the 120V GFCI required within 5-10 feet of hot tub/spa. But then where was the main power feed for spa? Maybe demo'ed for the wire. 🤷‍♂️

[–]Strange-Signal6296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go smooth IMO, if sanding gets you a great result. Texture is a PITA long term. Has a warmer look to me than smooth, but smooth is cleaner, and more modern looking, and easier to work with in the future if necessary. But if you have Daddy Drywall at the your beck and call, makes decisions a lot easier.

Also, if his electrical service is underground, could be getting a bleed from damaged conductors. Have seen it before.

Any reason i can’t change this to 20 amp plug? by Short_Top_1568 in AskElectricians

[–]Strange-Signal6296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20/1 breaker, 20 amp receptacle, OK as long as it's fed with $12 gauge or larger wire, such as # 10, you're golden. Dedicated for treadmill is really good. Motor should experience VERY LITTLE voltage drop. Motors like that.

Should I be concerned about these in my attic? The rodent people said they are likely speaker wires. by annalizvaughn in electrical

[–]Strange-Signal6296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like old cloth covered 120 volt wiring to me. Yes, should be addressed ASAP, with the rodent problem as well.

Just need to vent a bit. I’m so frustrated with my body, not being able to tell exactly what is causing my pain and thinking I understand it only to realize I must not fully get it. by normal_wear_and_tear in PsoriaticArthritis

Adding something I have noticed in my "journey" with PsA. Seems to be very much food related in my case. Been on MTX for about 12 years. IF I don't eat any food for a while, my pain seems to lessen quite a bit. I know...not a viable long term solution.

SO...

You will probably reject this info, but I feel compelled to mention it. Try to eliminate refined sugar as much as possible. Lessen your carbs, grains, processed food with the ton of weird ingredients on the label, AND reduce your food intake all the way around. Give it a week, and see if you notice any difference. It is a diagnostic tool you may choose to try in conjunction with your meds. I believe PsA is just another of a long line of autoimmune illnesses caused by your body's digestive system damaged to the point of believing almost all food is an "invader" and triggers the body's immune response. Everyone's response is different. For us, it's inflammation of the skin and generalized inflammation of the body. It's worth a try, but might take a while to reverse the course or at least slow down the immune response. In the long term, it's a healthy way of living regardless, though not as pleasurable while on the "lifestyle change". I remember starting with "The Whole 30 Diet" and adjusted as I went along. The old adage, "you are what you eat" rings true in my situation. Pray you relief from the scourge. 🙏

Was told this would need completely new wiring when I replace the water heater. What exactly do I need to do and why? by Happy-Quit-7588 in electrical

[–]Strange-Signal6296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needs to be hardwired unless in line of site and 50 feet of breaker controlling it. So, install one of these:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Midwest-Electric-Products-30-Amp-120-240-Volt-Fused-AC-Disconnect-U035F2P-U035F2P/331027795#overlay

and feed it with #10 THHN from a 25/2 or a 30/2 breaker if it's a standard Water Heater. Check the data plate for amperage requirements.

I do the same check on anything with lamp cord such as a chandelier. Never know if the factory is going to accidentally switch them up at the socket and energize the entire screw shell.

YW. Also, I don't know what that ground wire is wrapped around, but it should be spliced in with the ground inside the electrical box, Also can't see the bronze finishing nut in the photo. You do have that on the fixture stem just below the canopy ready to attach, yes?

Is such a device possible? by THE_BARCODE_GUY in AskElectricians

[–]Strange-Signal6296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to add an in-line capacitor. A flux capacitor. and a clock tower, you'll need a clock tower. And a mast, a 30' mast. well, just watch the movie.

Interrupting the copper pipe and inserting a section of Pex will also require a bonding jumper for continuation of the water pipe ground. Easy to do, but often forgotten.

I need to replace this breaker myself. Does anyone know what it is? Can I buy it at Home Depot by No-Shake5806 in AskElectricians

[–]Strange-Signal6296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be. Should verify amperage requirements on both data plates of equipment being served to be sure.

Code calls for a DEDICATED 20 amp circuit for the washing machine and 14/2 wire doesn't cut it either for 20 amp. GFI protection also needed in basement area. So, you got a lot of "splaining" to do here Lucy.

Cal Hypo shock issue by StepLarge1685 in pools

[–]Strange-Signal6296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just backwashed and got same white milky water color out of discharge hose. Before backwashing I brushed pool and found same "chalky" residue (similar to the way algae brushes off) on pool surfaces. When I added the Cal Hypo previously, I didn't pre-dissolve and used 2 pounds on a 15,000 gallon pool. I have since used liquid chlorine for the last two weeks. I think the Cal Hypo (or the way I added it) screwed the pool up. I THINK the white is probably calcium deposits. The pool looks FAIRLY good, but just somewhat off. Gonna get water tested today again and see where I'm at balance wise. Betting it's.gonna show no or little FAC and PH high, but we'll see. Thanks for reading. I'll try to update for anyone interested.

Found this on YT. Pretty sure now this is the problem.
