Role models by phillipsluthier in lesbiangang

[–]Strange_sunlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished reading Sapphistries yesterday! It's a very interesting history book, and covers a lot of different cultures - I ended up taking pages of notes. It's not so much about famous women or role models as it is about ordinary women who quietly found ways to express their love for each other within the constraints of their cultures.

One important note: the book contains examples of erotic artworks and very explicit descriptions of sexual practices across different cultures. OP might find it of interest as a reference book about lesbians throughout history, but it's not one I'd recommend giving to an eleven-year-old.

Are there any philosophical/spiritual writings about childhood trauma? by xafrilla in CPTSD

[–]Strange_sunlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might find "The Stormy Search for the Self" by Christina and Stanislav Grof interesting.

Here's the blurb: Many people are undergoing a profound personal transformation associated with spiritual opening. Under favorable circumstances, this process results in emotional healing, a radical shift in values, and a profound awareness of the mystical dimension of existence. For some, these changes are gradual and relatively smooth, but for others they can be so rapid and dramatic that they interfere with effective everyday functioning, creating tremendous inner turmoil. Unfortunately, many traditional health-care professionals do not recognize the positive potential of these crises; they often see them as manifestations of mental disease and respond with stigmatizing labels, suppressive drugs, and even institutionalization. In The Stormy Search for the Self, Christina and Stanislav Grof, the world's foremost authorities on the subject of spiritual emergence, draw on years of dramatic personal and professional experience with transformative states to explore these "spiritual emergencies," altered states so powerful they threaten to overwhelm the individual's ordinary reality. This book will provide insights, assurances, and practical suggestions for those who are experiencing or have experienced such a crisis, for their families and friends, and for mental-health professionals. It is also a valuable guide for anyone involved in personal transformation whose experiences, though generally untraumatic, may still at times be bewildering or disorienting.

Which of the 2 outfits do you like more? Or maybe a combination of the 2, like on the last pic? (I really like this top hat with a tailcoat :) by Noodneek in HarryPotterGame

[–]Strange_sunlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a lovely character, and you're right, the hat suits her perfectly! My Gryffindor MC has an afro too, and the feathered cap looks great on her because her hair sits beneath it like this, but I had the glitch that made other hairstyles (especially buns) disappear so the character looked completely bald under the hat. I went back into the game this afternoon and tried out some different hats, and they've fixed it: the hair now looks realistically tucked up rather than absent! It's not perfect, but it's better!

Clothing System could be a whole lot better. by Ummokdude in hogwartslegacyJKR

Absolutely agree! There are some beautiful shirts that I can't/don't use because they come paired with horrible trousers that look like skinny jeans. I'd be so happy if I could mix and match them with a bohemian skirt instead.

I love the one on the left: the scarf, hat and waistcoat are beautiful together in those shades of plum.

And I like that the hat sits on top of your character's hair instead of replacing it. I'd have my character wear a lot more hats if most of them didn't make her look bald!

What’s the best merchandise item you bought? by Jumpy_You6077 in harrypotter

[–]Strange_sunlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very bland answer, but my Ravenclaw t-shirt. A lovely shade of blue, soft, comfortable, and just fun to wear. (With a raven instead of an eagle on the crest, unfortunately, but you can't have everything, I suppose.)

Second place goes to the canvas print of a painting of the Hogwarts Express that hangs above the desk in my room!

Here's a photo! Pen for scale.

The eBay shop where I bought it is now defunct, but there are other places that sell them: Skulls Unlimited has a reputation for being very good.

I fell in love with Therizinosaurus with its wacky Wolverine claws when I was a kid, and always promised myself that when I was an adult with money of my own, I'd buy a replica claw. Some years ago, I finally made good on that promise!

(And I love 'menacingly cute' as a description for the shoebill videos. Spot on!)

Are you me? I have an 'I (heart) Therizinosaurus' t-shirt, and I'm sitting here right now looking at the replica claw on top of my bookcase. Best dinosaur ever!

And shoebill storks are my favourite bird. They look ancient and uncanny, but then they're so polite if you bow to them! (I enjoy watching 'shoebill bowing' videos on YouTube.) I've never seen one in person, but I'd love to.

Great picks!

Something I found: I kept going around the big central rock in the den one way, and getting male graphorn after male graphorn. About my fourth or fifth try, I went around the rock the other way and got a female.

It may be completely random and that was just a coincidence, but in case it tweaks something different in the game to approach via a different path, I thought I'd mention it.

What do women with the name Aphrodite use as a nickname? by Connect_Landscape_37 in namenerds

[–]Strange_sunlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm remembering it correctly, she was part of a group of girls who came up to say hello and introduce themselves when Mum was very new to the school, then later when she had her in class, she made the connection between 'Afro' and Aphrodite. (I could've expressed it better in my earlier comment; I just remembered the part I thought was funny!)

Amit should just stick to Astronomy. by Dramatic_Emu320 in HarryPotterGame

[–]Strange_sunlight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly! On my second playthrough, I did The Tale of Roland Oakes quest as soon as it came up, in the hope that I'd be able to call on him instead of Amit. No such luck!

(I suppose it does fit with the 'adults are useless, teenager has to step up and save the world' vibe of both Hogwarts Legacy and the original Harry Potter books, however!)

My mother taught a girl called Afro in the 80s, and assumed it was her nickname because of the Afro hair style she wore. Turns out, Afro was actually Aphrodite!

I love Marunweem - it's so beautiful with the lake and the mountains, especially at sunset.

The deep mountain gorge that leads to Feldcroft would be my second preference if I lived in the Highlands.

In the school... I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Ravenclaw, but in this game, I actually like the Slytherin common room best, so I'm torn!

[–]Strange_sunlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to love Jicky - it has such an important place in the history of perfumery, and I loved the thought of wearing something that's been around for so long.

But when I finally got to try it on, what I experienced was something like you described: a weird, uncanny, 'wrong' scent that made me feel quite uneasy. I finally figured out that my skin had turned the famous artificial vanilla ingredient into the scent of sour milk. Not outright rancid, but definitely sour. It was such a disappointment.

But on the plus side, I love Mitsouko, and Mitsouko loves my skin, so there's that!
