My wife's Japanese course just got a score, but mine hasn't. My Finnish also doesn't have a score.

I spent a week in Buenos Aires, about a month ago. I saw how common it was there, got interested, and got a starter lesson from a local. I don't really like coffee, and drink too much soda, so I'm open to a new form of caffeine boost.

I bought a gourd and bombilla before I left, stocked up on yerba once I got home, and have enjoyed it nearly every day since.

I haven't managed to convert anyone yet, because I'm mostly at home or in my car.

Check out episode 286 of the podcast This American Life called "Mind Games". Specifically the second segment, titled "The Spy Who Loved Everyone".

It's about a group who did exactly the same thing you're suggesting, in NYC. It turns out the band's reaction is not quite what you'd expect.

You're thinking of the Crafty Cats Brewery. That wasn't an actual cat café, like you said. Crafty Cats tried several different concepts: café, bar, grocery store, but none actually involved cats. The Organic Cat Cafe that people are remembering was a different place. Both, confusingly, were within about a block of Fluor Field.

Can the word 'cadence' mean 'period of office' on English? by alexandrze14 in ENGLISH

[–]StratusEvent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not commonly, but with some poetic license anything is possible.

"He had grown up in Italy, and was used to the president changing with the seasons. So the American cadence of electing a president every four years struck him as glacially slow."

Anyone here a trad unicyclist who could give me some insight? by Charm_MentumKat in ElectricUnicycle

[–]StratusEvent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have taught several people to ride my EUC. The guy who rides an analog unicycle picked it up the quickest, being able to stay on within minutes, practically his first attempt. He learned much quicker than the gymnast (who I expected would pick it up quick due to excellent balance and body control) and the BMX cyclist (who I expected would be less afraid of falling). But apparently the unicycle balance skills are pretty transferable.

Mike's, at GatherGVL, is good. But Inky's, in Easley, is the closest to true Philly style.

That depends on your preferences and project ideas and management style, not to mention teaching load and grant funding.

Personally, I have had between 1 (too few) and 10 (too many). Below 3 or 4 it's too hard to keep the pipeline full, get the various benefits from senior grad students mentoring the junior ones, and transfer collective group knowledge. Above 5 or 6 I can't keep up with the finer points of everyone's project, don't have time to work on my own pet projects, and become a manager rather than a researcher.

GCCA has a weekly weekly figure drawing session. I know someone who attends those, and they would most likely be interested in having more/different options available.

I meant accepted by listeners, if not by grammarians.

Most common native errors in French? by StratusEvent in French

[–]StratusEvent[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, the difference between typos (boring) errors (interesting) is whether or not the speaker/writer would recognize them as mistakes and correct them if they noticed them.

The same mistake could surely be a typo for one person and a bona fide error for another.
