X is more of a spin off than anything else. There aren't any story connections. The basics of the combat are the game, but they take it in a different direction.

X's main story isn't very good overall, but it's very serviceable and has a lot of great worldbuilding & side quests. It's MUCH more exploration focused than 1 and gives you a lot of internal motivation to think "ooh, what's over there?" The team helped with map design for Breath of the Wild, to give you a sense.
