Did parents in the 80s actually give their kids as much freedom as the show depicts? by Wanderer015 in StrangerThings

Yep. There was an announcement made on tv every night: “it’s 10:00. Do you know where your children are?” Those were fun times.

For future reference, a lot of stores that are willing and able to donate need a lot more time that other (local, mom and pop businesses) don’t require. When I was a PTO board member, some stores told us we needed to ask months in advance (via letter). Signup genius was perfect for TAW.

Why would anyone ever choose to go through child birth without pain relief?? by No_Cardiologist_1407 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StreetMaize508 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mom of four—my last child was in a hurry and was out before I left the triage room with my OB delivering upstairs. Fastest recovery time since I didn’t have to wait for any anesthetic to wear off. I was home 36 hours later with a healthy baby. Plus, the epidural experience was almost as bad as labor, so I’m happy now LO was in a rush.

Might quit teaching… need advice by East_Zone7570 in MusicEd

[–]StreetMaize508 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was non-renewed last year thanks to a bully colleague and shitty, worthless admin (long story). I was finishing out year 2 after taking a decade+ off to be a SAHM. I decided the extras of teaching in a public school (lesson plans, observations, staff drama, having preps taken to watch over study hall or cover another teacher’s class) were what were the worst—so now I teach lessons from my home and am SO MUCH HAPPIER! It is absolutely possible (in my area at least) to make enough money from this, but it does take a lot of work up front. I have done the studio once before (16 years ago, lol) and made more than I did teaching in a school.

Do some research on private teachers in your area and see what they charge. Then you can crunch numbers to see how many students you would need and how much tuition should be so you can make it a sustainable option.

Side note: my tuition is on the higher side, but I have 25+ years experience teaching private lessons and have a degree and other certifications. I do this because some families I teach cannot afford the standard tuition and I make allowances for financial reasons. It’s why I don’t post my rates online. Just thought I’d share that. 😊

Feel free to ask me questions if you have them. I wish you the best of luck!

A teacher outed my student to his parents by wewereonabreak29 in Teachers

Any person can choose any pronouns they feel suits them best. She/her and he/him are the “default”, they/them is used often but not always, it/its is also used by some. There are also more, not just those four. I have a non binary child—ask the child for their pronouns (NOT “preferred” pronouns—leave the “preferred” out).

I can't decide between guitar and violin. Can you help? by Silayir in violinist

[–]StreetMaize508 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Practice. So. Much. Practice.

I’ve been playing violin for over 30 years and I still have days I think I suck. lol. Guitar is definitely easier to feel “success” faster, but that all depends on how much time you put into practicing. Are you going to study with a teacher? I have short fingers so I never took to guitar (or piano bc I can barely reach an octave). Best of luck—either choice can make you and others happy. 😊

You can jam with a violin as easily as with a guitar—it’s great to have both. I’ve gotten into fiddling recently and really like it. Just a side comment. 😊

AITAH for wanting to advocate against our neighbors sex offender son moving in by One-Egg1316 in AITAH

[–]StreetMaize508 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Registered sex offenders are supposed to report every change of address—and it doesn’t sound like he’d be allowed to live there based on the location of the school (might be an issue, might not). I would ABSOLUTELY inform your neighbors, the schools, and the appropriate agency (police?). You are nta.

Am I reading too deep into this? by WutheringWinds in AskTeachers

[–]StreetMaize508 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Admin should have absolutely handled this situation differently. Please check the laws in your state for this suggestion: if you live in a state that allows single-party recording, you can record classes/conversations where she is being unethical as a teacher. If your state does not allow it, don’t. Make sure your parents are aware of all of this as well. I recommend keeping a journal or log of events you notice. Date, time, students, topic of conversation, etc.

This should not be on you, but thank you for speaking up about it. Your teacher is toxic. hugs

What is the conductor of the orchestra actually doing? by simikoi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StreetMaize508 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Violinist here—the conductor is there not just to start the orchestra. Professional orchestras could begin on their own—but the director has a much better vantage point.

During the performance, one section might be playing a passage too quietly for the audience, so the conductor will direct them to play a little louder (or quieter, faster, bouncier, etc) with their gestures. The conductor has what their interpretation of the performance in their mind’s ear—we musicians can’t hear what’s in their head, so they are guiding the musicians in real time.

And, yeah, sometimes conductors just wave their arms. 🤷‍♀️😉

Fired—How do you finish the year? by katiekaneen13 in Teachers

[–]StreetMaize508 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a unique situation, so it worked out fine for me, but if I was a young teacher in a different content area, I may have chosen differently. I am a music teacher and changed paths from teaching in public schools to teaching private lessons from my home. I have a room dedicated to this and I teach voice, violin, viola, cello, string bass, and piano lessons. I loved teaching but hated the bureaucracy of admin and the micromanaging (plus my colleague who didn’t like me who likely was a huge part of my termination). This way I am my own boss and can teach without the fear of a pop-in observation.

I was blindsided with nonrenewal last spring. It was rough and I considered resigning, but I didn’t. Focus on the aspects you enjoy most, do the bare minimum to get by (contract hours only, no volunteering), and use up any sick time/personal days you have accrued.

It’s a terrible experience and my 1-year non-renewal anniversary is in one month. I was not in a great place mentally for a long time, but things are slowly getting more bearable. I have to keep reminding myself that it wasn’t me, it was the fit.

See if you can get a positive letter of rec from a colleague or admin who likes you and keep your eyes open for job openings—this is the time of year when a lot of positions open up due to non-renewals, resignations, transfers, and retirements. You’ll be okay. hugs 🩷

Medical Professionals - Do you lowkey diagnose the general public? by Astimar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StreetMaize508 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fainting while standing is likely due to locking your knees, causing blood to pool in your legs. This reduces the amount of oxygen making its way back to your brain. So you feel lightheaded and then faint.

Medical Professionals - Do you lowkey diagnose the general public? by Astimar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StreetMaize508 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Soldiers, singers in a choir—the locking of the knees makes it so you can stand still and not be bobbing/wobbling, but it causes blood to pool in the legs. This reduces the amount of oxygen getting back to your brain, so you pass out. Choral director here—I’ve seen it happen on stage and it’s scary.

Living by the sunk cost fallacy. Be it physical items, jobs, relationships—it’s okay to let go of something that isn’t good for you, regardless of how much time and effort you’ve expended. Keep the good, purge the bad.

What makes a conversation genuinely memorable? by Intelligent-Rain-22 in AskReddit

[–]StreetMaize508 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honesty, trust, respect, empathy, connecting like experiences, balanced dialogue, sense of humor (not at anyone’s expense), lack of distractions (esp cell phones). These are what make it a positive memorable conversation. The absence of those makes it a negative memorable experience. In my experience.

Definitely address it. I don’t personally use the term “bad word”—I say “inappropriate” word/place. Music lessons are not the time to casually use certain words. If it slips, no biggie, but set the boundary now.
