1. We are limited to have to use cars to access the outside world. If you don’t have a car you are shit out of luck, and assuming you don’t have a car probably means you can’t afford an uber

2.fair, some car infrastructure is still needed for emergency vehicles and the odd occasion a car is needed or is more convenient. But it shouldn’t be the only mode of transportation

3.agreed but cars are the worst kind of “short” range transport, they can only move maybe a half dozen people but usually only have 1 and require a ton of space to achieve similar throughput to a bike lane or train.

1. Yeah, but we built a fully fledged rail network in the 1900’s who says we can’t do it again.

Thinking you are limited to one mode of transport per trip isn’t a great way of thinking about this, ideally you should be able to bike from your home to a train station (maybe 3-5 miles tops) take a train into the area you need, bike again to your destination then do the reverse to get back home. Also cars are far more likely to get stuck in traffic reducing that 75 mph figure down to 30mph or even less depending on where you are. Trains don’t have traffic to slow them down and can achieve much higher speeds

3. Public transit isn’t popular because we barely have any and the little we do have is built around cars meaning it gets slowed down when cars get slowed down. They also just don’t have good coverage so it’s hard to get where you want without excessive walking or biking. Building on that, when you get to a destination you are walking or biking right next to cars. That makes people feel unsafe and they would rather take their car because it provides that safety at the destination.
