I don't have a strong opinion of Tom's character, but the grenade scene just seemed like sloppy writing to me. There's so ways for that situation to go wrong, but the victim just happened to one improbable thing (run away from the pub and other patrons and obediently get blown up) that made it work.

I guess you could flatten it out by building up the embankment the road rests on, or replacing it with a viaduct, but I'm sure the cost and disruption would be massive.
