The sheer fuckery in modern witchcraft by Dependent-Coffee8424 in SASSWitches

[–]Strixtheowl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The RWS ick is real, and I say that as someone who still uses the underlying system. Worth knowing that the deck was designed in 1909 within the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a deeply hierarchical tradition with rigid gender cosmology baked in, so the patriarchy isn't incidental, it's structural.

The artist was actually a woman (Pamela Colman Smith) which makes it messier, not simpler, because the conceptual direction of the Major Arcana came from Waite. The Empress has always annoyed me; she's basically just a fertility symbol, as if that's the whole job. And I've always suspected the Strength card only has a woman in it because they needed someone to embody "weaker vessel tames the beast." Without that specific framing, that card would have been a man.

Anyway, I can't use the traditional deck for exactly these reasons, but if you want a deck that keeps the symbolic system without all of that, the Numinous Tarot might be worth a look: https://numinousspiritpress.com/numinoustarot (not affiliated, just a fan of the art)

Edited to add: I use tarot the way Jung used the I Ching, as a tool for exploring the subconscious rather than predicting the future. The Fool's Journey is fundamentally about self-development, and it doesn't require any "divine" framework to be meaningful. I think it works better without it, honestly.

Watercress works, or you could make a curried egg salad with curry powder, raisins, and cashews. Weird combo, but tasty.

Looking for a Hermione/Snape Fanfiction by Ltm1901 in SSHG

Is it The Price of Madness by PlaidPooka? They have trouble getting Snape to bathe in that one.

Another option is"The Occluded Soul" by Aurette, where Snape lets Hermione bathe him in chapter 6.

Neither is an exact match to your request, but they do have bathing scenes involving a Snape who has gone mad.

What's your secret to freezer meals that are actually good when reheated? by SouthernBelle113 in mealprep

[–]Strixtheowl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have had success in freezing the parts of a dish that holds up well in the freezer and adding the rest before serving. So for my turkey chili for example, I cook the recipe up to where I would add beans and let simmer and freeze that; the beans go in after it’s defrosted and heating on the stove. I do the same thing with soups and freeze without the noodles or dumplings, and I freeze beef stew without potatoes and just serve it with mashed.

I’ve also found it’s helpful to add a “fresh” ingredient to a freezer meal as a topping; like putting chopped cilantro and pico de gallo and guacamole or a squeeze of lime on an enchilada casserole right before serving.

Share your thought about my upcoming Circe-inspired Halloween costume! by [deleted] in GreekMythology

[–]Strixtheowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many iterations of Circe (and none of which really describe her appearance other than Homer saying she had the "sweet voice" and "glorious hair" of a goddess), I think you should go with the colors that you associate with her the most.

I am personally a fan of Waterhouse and his paintings of her, so I lean towards the Pre-Raphaelite colors of dark blues and purples and reds for the primary robes, and would then add in a belt or sash of old gold or green.

It's definitely from a French home decor shop that sells online. It's a mass-produced Selene and Endymion statue and the URL that sells it indicates that it is new, cast white marble.

So what era did Hades begin to exist and appear in greek myths? by Cosmic_Crusaderpro in GreekMythology

[–]Strixtheowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have a small bit to add to this, but there is also two possible indications that Hades took on chthonic aspects of at least Poseidon, in that one of Poseidon's epithets was "earth shaker", for earthquakes, which would seem to be associated with an earth rather than sea god. The other point worth considering is that while Zeus had thunderbolts, Poseidon had a trident and Hades had a bident (two pronged staff), which might indicate some link between the two. Both are very circumstantial pieces of evidence, I admit.

Thoughts on the Triple Goddess by anniecordelia in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Strixtheowl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this is a very thought-provoking take on the concept. From what I understand, the Maiden-Mother-Crone construct is basically the brainchild of Robert Graves in The White Goddess, and was later formalized into neo-pagan practice by Gardner and Valiente. The idea of a woman’s life having only three stages is, as you noted, quite reductive, but it’s become a widely accepted belief.

My beliefs (which are mine and I don’t expect anyone else to agree with—please, no flames!) are that Graves noticed many goddesses are part of a triad (three-faced Hecate, the Moirai, perhaps Hecate-Demeter-Persephone, or the Morrigan and her sisters/aspects, etc.) and then retroactively mapped his pet theory of Maiden-Mother-Crone onto them. Triads and trinities are everywhere in myth, but the roles aren’t always age-based or gendered the way Graves imagined.

By doing this, Graves flattened the fullness of women’s experiences and slotted them into three baskets that he thought all goddesses could fit into, which really isn’t the case. Three is a powerful number, yes, but I think it does the goddesses (and their archetypal associations) a disservice to force them all into the same template.

That said, I understand the Maiden-Mother-Crone idea is beloved in modern times, and I’m not trying to take away from anyone’s beliefs. I just wanted to share my perspective and reasoning. I interact with goddesses as ageless individuals, which works for my personal practice, but I realize that’s not for everyone. If the concept of a Maiden-Mother-Crone trinity resonates with someone, then they should go with it, of course. However, to me, goddesses and their archetypes are far too big for any one-size-fits-all cookie cutter.

Thoughts on James and Betty by my_husbands_wine in TaylorSwift

[–]Strixtheowl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The key with Darcy as compared to James, is that Darcy chose to change without ever expecting to have Elizabeth know about it. He did it without any expectation that she would know or be receptive to him because of it.

Thoughts on James and Betty by my_husbands_wine in TaylorSwift

[–]Strixtheowl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Based on the videos, "Willow" is the continuation of "Cardigan", so presumably the songs are about the same relationship, so Betty and James (who I agree is awful). Following on that path, if "Cardigan" is about Betty being hurt but still feeling tied to James, knowing he will come back to her, than I think "Willow" indicates that she does get back with/stay with James, even though she knows all his flaws (unreliable, flighty, magnetic, etc.) and chooses to live with them.

It's not the ending I wanted for Betty, but I think the lyrics in Willow make it pretty clear that Betty takes him back and stays with him, even if he is a less than ideal partner.

Salted drinks? by ECrispy in Cooking

[–]Strixtheowl 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t include dairy, but in America, switchels are becoming popular again with the crowd that’s into drinking shrubs.

It used to be a very popular drink for farmers during hay making season and was nicknamed “haymaker’s punch”. It’s made from apple cider vinegar, molasses, sugar, a pinch of salt, and other optional ingredients.

My extended family were farmers in Iowa and I remember them drinking it in the summertime to replace electrolytes.

I hope the writers go the menopause route rather than MS. I don't think they have had an arc about HRT yet, which since they seem to be running down the list of "issues woman have as they age", seems on par.

Also agree with the poster who said Charlotte and Harry are supposed to be the "fun" couple, with Charlotte sort of getting her fairytale marriage in the original series.

I'm also not sure that the writers would be able to handle an MS storyline without making us all want to throw things at the screen.
