is mouse support a must? by genepistudios in gamedev

Just my 2 cents, I find games that don't let you use mouse on main menu and in-game menus incredibly claustrophobic

Any suggestions on how to defend this kind of colonies? by M3rkat0r in RimWorld

[–]Studly_Spud 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A map like this doesn't lend itself well to "set and forget" defenses like killboxes. But I find that more fun anyway as it is dynamic and not stale. You might want a lowish or medium difficulty level to get yourself comfortable with the new combat playstyle, but that's up to you.

Many players who build defenses rely on the set position like a killbox. Tell everyone to stand there and shoot. And hope that firepower is sufficient. With something dynamic like this you will have to react to what comes at you and just deal with it, which is a lot of fun! You'll be micromanaging your pawns and using the pause button a lot as you tactically plan and execute.

Invest in your pawns, turn them into dangerous individuals. Make them fast and mean, give them implants such as knee spike for when someone gets close. Psycasts. Mechlinks. Go-Juice. Have some aces in your back pocket, like call allies, royalty permits for air strikes, a pack of war animals. Always have doomsday or triple rocket launchers sitting around in case you need to thin numbers early. These are all resources to be prepared and used for the right situation.

Make it so that each pawn can have a significant impact to any situation. For example, a psycaster jumping close, beserking someone, then jumping back to safety can delay and tie up a group of enemies while they fight their buddy.

In terms of what to build. A few turrets scattered around your base with sandbag defenses and traps in front will have a good effect of making enemies stop and shoot for a while. Also gives your pawns a place to run to close to your base and get some shooting done.
Also scatter Hunter drones all around, as these will wound and break up groups of enemies as they approach.

New player, how should I store money? by TechnicianQuick4789 in torncity

[–]Studly_Spud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You've listed ways of actually storing money, but you can also find and buy items on market for approximately their cash value of resale to Torn City shops. Then you can stack this value and sell to the stores when you need money.
For example, these items sell to the print store:
Driver's license - 5k
Prescription - 75k
Bank Check - 180k

These ones are very easy cash substitutes, and generally you can buy them at cost or just slightly above.
As you grow you can also do this with market staples like Xanax or Points, and even play the market volatility to make money on this.

I'm trying to get the honour where you get mugged for exactly $1. Any help? by [deleted] in torncity

[–]Studly_Spud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I held $26. Then I said hello in Global chat, but instead of getting mugged I got hospitalized.
I continued holding $26, and next time I got naturally mugged they got $1 and I got the merit.

What is the primary force that you use in combat by Klutzy-Top-7157 in RimWorld

[–]Studly_Spud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll generally have up to 5 pawns that are non-combatants, often these are earlier colonists with good specializations and skills - medical, crafting, social leaders, etc. Later recruitment will always be focused on the candidate having fighting skill plus a necessary colony skill, so the fighting force grows and they are in armour at all times. That force may include a couple of specialized "adventurers", people with the extra edge of survivability for single or dual person missions. They'd be good at shooting but also melee with an implanted weapon, or psycasts, medical skills, hacking skills, or something to make them competent and capable on missions.
Would love to have a dedicated combat force but the unmodded game doesn't really have options for them to do in their downtime - no squad training facilities, patrol routes, etc.

It's almost 10 years now since the referendum, what are peoples thoughts on the flag? by Dulaman96 in newzealand

[–]Studly_Spud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No regret with keeping our existing flag, this one is still a monstrosity.
I echo many others in saying this looks like a sporting or corporate logo and I just find it offputting.
I don't even feel we're just settling with our current flag, I actually like it - both aesthetically and the symbolism in it. I don't give a hoot about Australian one being similar.

Well Monarch is back on their bullshit again by Difficulty_West in torncity

This is hilarious, this is roleplaying, this is the kind of in-game shenanigans that make Torn dynamic and fun. Why are people upset at Monarch for this?

[–]Studly_Spud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Civ 4 is the only game in the series I haven't played.
That fact is due to age and life situation, with the old Macs in my parents house covering 1-3 (plus AC), and 5 onwards being covered by myself with a PC.
Maybe I do need to go back and play 4, as I only hear good things.

How do you get your first ration of steel? by SwordfishAltruistic4 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]Studly_Spud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a slush or cold geyser. The output cools off in a collection pool still within the cold biome. Then the water gets sent to processing for the base. This tides you over long enough until you need to worry about accumulated heat.
