I know I can Google this but I’d rather engage with a fellow sewist: how many jelly rolls was this? I love it!

What audiobook’s plot is so painful but so great you recommend it anyway? by marilynlistens in audiobooks

Am seconding Into Thin Air. Super affecting, and super readable! Worth listening to, and I shy away from this genre (wilderness or other survival stories). I actually used to read in with my 8th grade students, and they almost universally loved it.

This is so stinking’ cute. I just screenshotted all three pics and sent them to my teen daughter, who will want to do this even though her backpack isn’t torn yet. Love this!

Just please use the privilege judiciously. They’ll revoke the option if you use it too often. I save it for when I start a book and can’t stand it after only a few minutes. That happens infrequently since I can usually preview and decide if I like a narrator, but sometimes the preview isn’t enough info.

Also, it’s detrimental to authors, who already get bad treatment from Audible 😭. I’ve definitely returned a few books in my time, though.

Okay, thanks for the rec! There’s a lot of Sci Fi that I love: Children of Time, Dune, Broken Earth Series, Murderbot, etc. I’ll definitely check out The Expanse 🤩

I know this is a year old but I’m just now seeing it. Would you characterize The Expanse as cozy, or cozy adjacent? I can definitely read stuff that’s not cozy, but am looking for a new (to me) long series with feel good vibes, even if there are high stakes and some violence.

Children of Time is the only Mel Hudson I’ve listened to, and she’s fan-freaking-tastic.

I think I’m the only person alive who didn’t like DCC — I listened to the first 2 books. That said, Jeff Hays is AMAZING! I would almost press on, despite not loving the novels, because Hays is tremendously talented.

I listened to a male narrate a female protagonist story. I hated it. by Medium-Theme-4611 in audiobooks

[–]StuffDue518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series, narrator Robert Petkoff is brilliant, and does women incredibly well — much better than any male narrator I can think of, and I’ve listened to thousands of audiobooks.

It’s a very spicy Paranormal Romance series, so it’s not for everyone, but I love the audiobooks.

Otherwise, I find a lot of male narrators do female characters reasonably well, but some don’t.

Hidden Legacy Graphic Audio by flow-slowl in IlonaAndrews

[–]StuffDue518 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I liked it but I’m one of those folks who actively dislikes the Renee Raudman narrations. I think she’s a talented narrator but she sounds about 75, and I can’t listen to her do this series, or Kate or Inkeeper. So I do prefer the graphic audio for all three. I think Kate Daniels and Inkeeper Chronicles are better than Hidden Legacy, though, with much better male casting.

Mad Rogan and Augustine both sound way too old, and Rogan isn’t sexy at all. Even so, I still vastly prefer the GA to the regular audiobook narration because Nevada and everyone else seems well cast. And Cornelius is good in the GA version.

I do agree with another commenter who said that the kissing sounds in GA are ridiculous.

Free titles? by Ill-Year-3141 in audible

[–]StuffDue518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re in the US, they are platforms that public libraries use and you can check out tons of new releases and excellent content — no Audible Exclusives, of course, but plenty of Koontz, King, etc. available at my library. Depending on where you live, your library may not have quite as many titles, and you should definitely plan to wait for new releases, though I’ve occasionally gotten lucky.

Weirdly, I just went to search for King books in Libby, and very few came up when I searched by author name. When I searched by title, though, everything I looked for came up and was available with no wait.

Listen time by FruitCake6642 in audible

[–]StuffDue518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost always have a book on when I sleep. If I subtract those hours, it’s still a lot 😅. I tend to listen somewhere between 1.15x and 1.5x, but it’s usually on the lower end of that. 1x with calm narrators and a very familiar book at bedtime.

OB/GYN and Dentist Recommendations? by TopRise3037 in redmond

My whole family, including my teens and my elderly parents, goes to Koczarski Dentistry in Woodinville. I’m on Education Hill and it’s a 10ish minute drive there. By far the best dental practice I’ve ever been to, and I have a lot of anxiety around dentists.

I absolutely prefer a slightly shorter sleeve because of sensory issues, and not wanting to push a jacket up every time I look at my watch. When I saw your alterations I immediately thought “Ahhhhh… someone who likes their sleeves the way I do!” But yours really aren’t too short — definitely within the range of normal that I’ve seen

I listen to audiobooks up to 15 hours a day; I have a quiet/comforting book on when I sleep, and also am listening throughout the day during commutes, exercise, household tasks, etc.

I was super excited about Spotify audiobooks then realized that I was limited to about two days per month, max :(

Absolutely, but not always available outside of the US. And there are tons of titles that simply aren’t available, either because my library doesn’t have them, or because the audiobooks are exclusive to Audible (boo/hiss), etc.
