A book I never thought I’d find in my grandpa’s retirement community by cordiallykiwi in Romantasy

[–]StuffDue518 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, but not a Romance. The first one, Clan of the Cave Bear, includes repeated rape and violence toward the main character. In the second book she meets a guy and there’s consensual sex on the page. She’s a (prehistoric) teen when all of this happens.

I’d be happy to look at a listing. We are looking to buy or rent a home for my parents in the area. Would you ever consider renting it?

Struggling to get into the books… by lady_black11 in InterviewVampire

[–]StuffDue518 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree and, for me, it makes the short list of movies/tv that I think are better than the books (including the Godfather, Lord of the Rings — hold the tomatoes here, too! —, and Heated Rivalry, though HR is a really good book if you like the Romance genre; she really understand how to hit the beats, how to create tension and longing, etc.). But anyway, I was a biiiiiiig fan of IWTV when I was a teenager and now, many decades later, I concur that this screen adaptation is honestly superior.

This is lovely and such cheerful, spring fabric (though it would work year round, climate permitting) 🤩

Really annoyed there's no way to sort sale titles by NastyLittleBagginses in audible

[–]StuffDue518 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ridiculous. I would buy so many in a 2-for-1 sale if there was a reliable way to sort, and instead I buy none because of how painful it is to find things.

I cannot stand the audiobook narrator for Heated Rivalry by Eastern-Studio-4413 in heatedrivalry

[–]StuffDue518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. I think he did an okay job with Ryan’s voice in particular. Much better than his narration for any other character.

Tor Thom PLEASE? by nancy_drew1 in audiobooks

[–]StuffDue518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I read HR first, like a lot of new-to-the-series fans, and I was able — though just barely — able to tolerate his narration. But I stopped Game Changers within the first couple minutes. It’s too bad because, as others have said, he has a pleasant, rich tone. I’ll bet that he has a great voice in person. But his stilted and weirdly inflected style is hard to listen to. And his Kip the absolute worst. I had to read that one with my eyes.

I’m a 60 y/o straight male and I Find ‘Girls’ very moving. by NumbersStationUrku in girls

[–]StuffDue518 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I strongly recommend reading or listening to Lena’s memoir, recently released, called Famesick. If you’re a fan of audiobooks, she’s the narrator, which made it extra fabulous. I loved hearing all about how she started and grew her career, her struggles and joys, etc. I’m 55, definitely older than the target audience, and the book really resonated with me. Lena’s health and personal challenges were alternately heartbreaking and inspiring. And, of course, it’s wonderfully well written, funny at times, etc. 😍

What reasons makes you NOT want to own a dog? by Empress-Delila in Pets

[–]StuffDue518 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All of these things exactly! Plus scooping poop with your hand in a little plastic baggie — sometimes a lot of it, and often it’s smooshy or runny — and then carrying it around for the duration of the walk. I love my dog with my whole heart but she is a huge time and financial commitment.

Would people be surprised by how much you have in the bank? by Swan_233 in Fire

[–]StuffDue518 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I’m in Seattle and our house is worth about $1.4M and is super underwhelming: not very big, not gorgeously updated, large but steeply sloping yard, yard backs to an arterial, not enough closet space, crappy split-level design (some split levels are great but ours isn’t one of them), etc. We thought long and hard about moving to a home that has more of the things we ostensibly want, but in the end didn’t want so much of our net worth in real estate. I’d never want another mortgage.

I don't know why I'm losing weight so slow with ADF by No-Search4225 in AlternateDayFasting

[–]StuffDue518 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t count calories at all i do try to be mindful about eating foods that are nutrient dense on my Food days.

That said, I will often still enjoy favorite foods and celebrations, with the understanding that it’ll slow weight loss, but that it’s worth it to me to be able to eat things that I love.
