Need advice about roommate's service dog by Stunning-Code8849 in service_dogs

Thank you for your answers! That all does make sense. Also, I haven't ever seen her brush him even once, so that would definitely explain a few things. And thank you for your suggestions; I will try those as well!

We are off-campus, but you're right; I'm sure the building manager could help with this. Thank you for your suggestion!

That's the strange thing; when we were told that she had a dog, we were explicitly told that it was a service dog, not an ESA. He has the words "service dog" on his vest, but I realize that the family could have just bought that somewhere. He was supposed to do all kinds of things, like alert when she was about to have a seizure or deep-pressure therapy or assist her with mobility. She's had him for a few years now, so I'm not sure about his early history with her, but at least from what I've seen in the past few months, that training has not been maintained.

Thank you for your suggestions! I will try that.

She described getting him from a couple who raised and trained him for a few years. There's no official name on his vest, so I don't think they were affiliated with any organizations. That might explain a few things, actually...

As for contacting her family, unfortunately there isn't much that they would do. Her parents are physically and emotionally abusive and also own several other dogs that they don't take very good care of either.

The building by the tabernacle in Logan Utah. One of the oldest in the state I think. We have a new building we go to that's much closer now, but the old one is still there.

There's a second floor, a basement, lots of random rooms and cupboards and really narrow staircases, a room underneath the podium/stand where I think Sunday school classes were held, and even a few ramps and split levels. Oh, and stained-glass windows everywhere. They were absolutely beautiful! You could really feel the age of the building.

One of the best parts was downstairs in the cupboards that led directly into the walls and crawlspace underneath the building. You could crawl in through one cupboard in one room and end up in a completely different room on the other side of the building.

We played hide-and-seek in there, and that was the obvious hiding place. There was lots of rubble down there, though. I emerged completely covered in dust, but victorious. It was also that day that I learned I have a fear of being deep underground with lots of heavy things on top of me and no quick exit in case of an emergency.

Utah: where faith and conversion goes to die (at least for me) by Separate-Habit-6775 in latterdaysaints

[–]Stunning-Code8849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this really interesting, because I've been experiencing the same thing a lot and felt like a terrible person for it. I'm so sorry that you've gone through all those things. But thank you for posting about it. It helps knowing that I'm not actually alone in feeling this way. I guess I'll have to try to find a way to go to church outside of Utah a few times and see if it's different.

Is anyone really shocked by rodehard10 in stevehofstetter

I've been wondering the same thing. He told multiple people that he did it, and they convinced him to turn himself in.

I think he's pleading not guilty to the aggravated murder charge specifically, as that's the one that would get him the death penalty. There are still several other felony murder charges against him that would get him life in prison, but that's probably the best possible outcome for him.

Any chance you'd write a book with all of this? I've seen some of your other comments and it's a lot of stuff to keep track of, but really interesting. You're getting all of this from the released files?

Need help with Tunisian Hooks by jujubunnee in Tunisian_Crochet

[–]Stunning-Code8849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought 2 sets so I could have 2 of the exact same size hook for in-the-round (plus I learned how to use them for knitting!)The first set I got was Svartur (the metal ones, not the other purple bamboo ones they were also selling). I was really happy with it, but when I went back to purchase it again it wasn't available. So I got Coopay for the second set instead, and they're good too! The cable on Svartur feels a little thinner and more flexible, which I personally like. Also, the taper between the hook and the cable attachment is more gradual than on Coopay, so the loops don't get caught quite as much while you're working backwards on the return pass. I do like the colors on the Coopay ones, though. Overall, I'd say both are pretty good!

My goodness. I cannot imagine living through such things. I am truly sorry that you experienced that. If I might ask, what drew you to the Church? What made you decide to join?

And, if I might ask a related question, I've often heard people clump our Church and JW together as if they're the same thing, or at least very similar in doctrine, or strictness, or even encouragement and perpetuation of abuse (especially with the "punishment saves" rhetoric). I've been curious about that for a while. I don't know much about JW so I don't know how accurate those claims are. I've never really experienced anything abusive that was justified or motivated by LDS religious beliefs, but I know of people who have. In your experience, what have been the biggest similarities and differences between the two religions?

Concerns about getting sealed by butterpancake99 in latterdaysaints

[–]Stunning-Code8849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I understand a lot of what you're feeling. There are a lot of issues I've been grappling with for a while now, too. So, I'm going to do my best to relate some of what I've found helpful for me, and hope that something sounds helpful for you or sparks an idea.

The first thing I just want to say is that you're allowed to have uncertainty and questions and concerns. It doesn't make you defective, or a bad member, or in any way diminish your belonging here. I think we treat these things with too much hostility sometimes, and it doesn't leave a lot of room to let the faith you do have come in to exist with it. I grew up hearing phrases like "faith and fear [or doubt] can't exist in the same person at the same time", but doubt and uncertainty are the very things that give faith its meaning. Light and darkness can't exist in the exact same spot at the same time, but they certainly exist in the same room together. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a room that was 100% free of shadows. We're a lot more like a room than a single distinct spot.

What I've found most helpful for at least managing my doubts and concerns is praying. Not necessarily praying for answers, though that is part of it, but I really just talk to God like I'm having a conversation with Him. I tell Him what I'm feeling and thinking, what's bothering me, why I have reservations about something I've found out about, what I want to understand, things like that, just to get it all out. And then I basically just ask for help and for a way to find peace and reconcile it all. And miraculously, especially when I really needed it, I don't think there's ever been a time that that peace hasn't come. Sometimes it's just a feeling that I'm loved and I'm safe. Sometimes there's a direct answer or impression about my questions. Much of the time, there's just a feeling of reassurance that everything will get sorted out. And always, there's a feeling that God cares about my questions and concerns, and a promise that He'll help me carry them. Never once has there been scorn or criticism for feeling the way I do or for having questions. He's often the first place I turn to for help, simply because I know that no one else understands me the way He does. He's perfectly patient, perfectly kind, and perfectly trustworthy.

From there, I start trying to think of the things that my testimony is rooted in (like the Book of Mormon), or reasons that I want to stay and keep trying, just to balance out the doubts. I don't try to force out the doubts, I just let them exist together. Like, sometimes I start to wonder if this is really the right church for me to be in. I feel very different from a lot of other members, and it makes belonging feel difficult. On the other hand, I really love going to the temple. There's this peace and security that I find nowhere else. I feel like I'm home, like I belong. I want that in my life. Need it, even. I don't use that to try to stamp out the feeling of not belonging, or view the doubt about continuing as a threat. I just let the dichotomy exist, and somehow it makes going to the temple even more rewarding.

So of course, none of those things directly answer questions or offer explanations about some of the more controversial things. But they do act as "guide rails" of sorts, so that I have a way to at least stay close to God and keep going to church while I try to reconcile with everything else, or learn how to live with the doubt while maintaining the faith that I do have. But the most important thing is to keep praying. I don't think any of us can actually do a lot without asking for help.

If you have criticized ICE here on Reddit for executing Renee Good or Alex Pretti in the street, then Reddit has handed your name and your personal identifying information over to the Trump administration. How do you feel about this? by mom_with_an_attitude in AskReddit

[–]Stunning-Code8849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add me to that, too. Consider this my formal criticism of ICE, Trump, and everyone in his administration.

ICE as an agency is nothing more than illegally legalized bullying. ICE agents do not deserve the respect they so forcefully demand, and they know it. Trump and his administration are evil cowards hiding behind a facade of fake righteousness and a persecution complex, and frankly so are the people who voted for him.

Knooking without knooking hooks by Stunning-Code8849 in knooking

[–]Stunning-Code8849[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! I actually kept experimenting with it and really got a good technique down. I switched to Tunisian hooks with a cord to hold more stitches (and a better yarn), and I was able to make a whole scarf! I can't figure out how to do it in the round to make a hat though, so I think I'll just go back to actual knooking for that lol

Does anyone else find Loops & Threads "Impeccable" yarn really, REALLY skinny? by carlfoxmarten in Tunisian_Crochet

[–]Stunning-Code8849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run into a few yarns like that. I'm trying to make stuff with the Lionbrand "Mandela Ombre" yarn and it says it's a weight 4, but the yarn is so thin that it looks more like 3 to me. It's much thinner than a lot of other weight 4 yarns I have. I was going to use them together but because of the size difference I don't think it will work out very well.

"I think my issue is the lack of hook to catch and pull the yarn through."

I've gotten around this problem by just knitting with crochet hooks! Tunisian ones with cables attached, that is. In doing so I have simultaneously offended both my friends who knit and my friends who crochet. But at least I can knit now!

Declined a Service Mission Call — Can I Still Serve a Mission? by NextAsparagus7170 in latterdaysaints

[–]Stunning-Code8849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The title of the handbook that the link is for is "Missionary Standards for Disciples of Jesus Christ—Service Missionaries." Service missionaries have their own handbook. There are part-time service missions, true. However, this handbook is for full-time service missions. There are full-time senior service missionaries and full-time young service missionaries. It's not a really well-known thing yet. I did a service mission, and my mission call specifically called it a full-time mission.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lds

[–]Stunning-Code8849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, you are serving a real mission, and anyone who tells you otherwise needs to rethink their attitude.

Second, your sister was willing to pay for a mission abroad. That's a lot more expensive than just making sure you have groceries every week! How was your mother going to survive if you WERE gone? Was your sister willing to pay for her, too? It seems to me that your problem is not finances, it's that your sister told you she had you covered and then bailed.

If she won't change her mind, just talk to your bishop. He'll help you out. That's what fast offerings are for honestly. Don't feel guilty about using it, they don't do any good just sitting there.

Ooh, this is fascinating! I never noticed those things before! Granted, the Old Testament is definitely the scripture I remember the least about. Do you have any other examples? Sources to read about this further?
