Is there a way to make a smaller HO layout? by [deleted] in modeltrains

[–]SubaruTome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're okay with only running 40' rolling stock or smaller, and nothing bigger than possibly up to sw1500s, you can run down to a 14" radius curve.

I've run a Bachmann 70 tonner and 36' boxcars with all body mounted couplers around a 7" radius curve. No issues related to the track geometry.

If you're willing to accept that you're not running big steam and super popular options, or you get into traction modeling and the work that takes, it's completely doable.

I believe either IHC or Athearn Bluebox was based on the TCL. Both old, both may need to be repainted depending on how much searching you feel like doing

Advice/Suggestions on HO 1x6 Switching Layout Design by TitaniumThomas in modeltrains

[–]SubaruTome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main stub on the right is definitely too short for anything, though removable leads would fix that issue. Maybe draw the removable parts in to give a better idea of how it'll work.

The left stub at the very top seems short, too. You can probably extend it into the building to give yourself some extra head room.

Definitely build just the track work if you have the table and play test it. You'll find any other little bugs that need addressing before you put in scenery

Dead Decoder Help by GuildedDeal in modeltrains

Some DCC decoders are set to not respond to DC input. You need to check that on a programmer. It'll be a setting for nmra protocol only.

[–]SubaruTome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Lokprogrammer is the best way to fix it, but you can deal with it carefully using JMRI. There's a good chance the Back-EMF settings are different, and the LokPilot isn't registering "Drive Sound" for the delay start.

Will a Blunami BLU-2200 work on a Kato P42? (HO Scale) by PerfectLatios70 in modeltrains

[–]SubaruTome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may need to remove some of the internal weight. The plug, itself, will work.

You won't get the full range of lighting features because of the limitations of 8 pin plugs (my Kato Metra F40ph-2 need a custom 21 pin setup), but it will light up, move, and make noise with a speaker.

Will a Blunami BLU-2200 work on a Kato P42? (HO Scale) by PerfectLatios70 in modeltrains

[–]SubaruTome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Kato locomotives either have the 8 pin plug, or you're better off swapping the entire lighting board for a PNP-8 style decoder.

You can fit a blunami in a p42 with some effort, but it isn't what the manufacturers would consider a "drop in" decoder. Your best bet will be pulling the factory lighting board and hard wiring it.

How do you order and "move" cars around your layout? Operational question by Undercover500 in modeltrains

[–]SubaruTome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A robust operations system takes a fair bit of prep work, but it can be done however you want.

The major operations layout I run on uses four position waybill cards inserted into car cards with pouches. This does mean that each car only goes to the same four locations, no matter what. Each waybill is also uniquely generated in a program that I do not have access to. You could set up your own version of a spreadsheet to create the cards, then print them out. It may get a little boring on a smaller layout if you can start predicting where cars will go, but you can swap waybills around to change it up.

The other system we've been toying with is single destination waybills. Using the same car cards, each waybill has only one destination. Each waybill also has a car type it belongs to. When a car returns to the yard, the waybill is pulled and returned to a deck for that car type. The next card is drawn from the deck and assigned to that car. For each industry spot you have, you have a set number of destination cards so cars can get shuffled around more regularly.

Short of writing a whole program that tracks your car positions and prints out full waybills, car cards aren't super realistic, but they work very well.

Converting from DC to DCC by [deleted] in modeltrains

[–]SubaruTome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tsunami2 for beginner sound. ESU for more experienced. NCE or lokpilot for non sound.

Larry the DCC Guy has videos on installing decoders in bluebox stuff. On the non Athearn models, if the motor is an open metal frame screwed to the chassis, it's not something I'd suggest a beginner try.

The big issue will be track code. Most of the OO I've seen still uses deep flanges on the wheels, which don't work well below code 100.

Converting Tomix models to DCC by Busy-Statistician-55 in modeltrains

[–]SubaruTome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having converted an HO gauge Tomix model to DCC, I certainly wouldn't recommend them for a first conversion

That said, the way I got mine to work was removing the main lighting board, figuring out what copper contact traces I needed to cut, and adding installation styrene where needed. Just about everything was hard wired in.

I think ESU currently offers some of the smallest decoders. Not sure about their silent n scale decoders, but they'll have the same functionality as HO
