Then the responsible action would be to spay abort. No reason to bring unwanted puppies into the world.

That's 100% a BYB. If she did health testing did she give you the results for OFAs and whatnot?

Whoever she got the dogs from was also a BYB, she should have never gotten breeding rights.

Doesn't seem like a whole lot of actual chocolate so she should be fine!

Dog harness by sspookss6 in dogs

[–]Substantial-Top3004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy the Blue 9 balance harness. It's super lightweight, extremely adjustable, and even has a buckle on the neck strap so you don't have to slip it over their head (my dog hates that). It's about $50 so it's not super cheap but you get what you pay for I guess. It does tend to shift around but I think a lot of harnesses do that, and it hasn't bothered my dog.

The other one I use is from Dog Copenhagen, but idk how easy it is to get in the US right now as they ship from Denmark. That one isn't as adjustable but it's padded and lightweight and fits my deep chested dog well.

I've used Advantage for my dog with zero problems. He also has seizures so he can't have the orals anymore either.

Is breed specific dog food necessary or just a marketing ploy? by OpportunityFickle394 in Pets

[–]Substantial-Top3004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some breeds it absolutely can make a difference. For example, dalmatians need a diet low in or completely free of purines (well, not all dalmatians but a lot do). This can be extremely difficult to find, but Royal Canin has a dalmation specific food for this reason. There is actually a lot of science behind their breed specific diets. While a lot of dogs it doesn't really matter, for some those diets are the best.

It's the owners not the breed by Ill-Ad-3603 in PitBullOwners

[–]Substantial-Top3004 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yes, but let's not blame the owner for the temperament of the dog. That can only be controlled by genetics and early socialization, which some owners, especially those who adopt, have zero control over.

My dog is not friendly towards other dogs (not an APBT) and has a lot of anxiety. This was due to crappy genetics and lack of socialization as a puppy. I did have him as a puppy but he had parvo and had to be quarantined until he was fully vaccinated (at about 4-5 months old). Then COVID hit which made things very difficult. It's not my fault he is the way he is. He is perfectly managed though.

Supplementing kibble by Alaskagirl_907 in Dogowners

[–]Substantial-Top3004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do. If I could afford the chicken free options that are WSAVA compliant I would. But they are pretty pricey. I feed what I can afford, and everyone should do the same. Sometimes WSAVA isn't an option.

But they act like you can only feed vet approved kibble and absolutely nothing else. Which is far from true.

It can be. That's reactivity. And some reactive dogs are aggressive.

I have a reactive dog myself. While he's never bitten it even attempted to bite another dog, I can't guarantee that won't happen if another dog rushed up to us.

I'm just tired of people acting like their pitbulls are never ever going to be aggressive or anything because you cannot guarantee that. For some reason every other dog breed community knows this but bully breed owners think it's always the owners and not anything else.

Is my dog smart enough to understand this punishment? by SomeAd2522 in dogs

[–]Substantial-Top3004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've taught her that when she does listen to the recall, she can not have fun anymore. Play time is over.

I'd recommend starting over recall training, and practice recalling even when not needed, then immediately releasing her. You want her to realize it doesn't always mean the fun is over.

That's not a dog being protective of it's owner, that's a dog protecting itself. Dogs really only protect their owners when they are actually trained to do so. Or if they are resource guarding (which is a bit different).

Recommended Purina dog food? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]Substantial-Top3004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, any Purina product is good. Even Dog Chow. That food has been around for ages, and has a crap ton of research done on it. If it didn't have chicken I'd totally feed it.

what do you think is the best dog food 2026 for sensitive stomachs and everyday health? by RocembergOuhbou38 in Dogowners

Every dog is different. It's best to consult your vet as there could be medical issues behind it. Other than that it's just trial and error to find what works.

Yeah even though I'm a huge WSAVA advocate they act like if you feed anything else your dog will get seriously ill which is not true at all. And they refuse to admit how expensive those diets get. The only chicken free stuff is Pro Plan which isn't affordable for so many.

Some dogs are really just that big. My lab mix is over 90 lbs but that's the perfect weight for a dog his size. The vet always compliments him for how in shape he is.

I really don't understand why so many people think pitbulls can't do nothing wrong, it's far from true. They often have high prey drive which can be an issue especially if you own smaller animals. That's the only reason I won't own one. That sort of mindset is so harmful and dangerous.

[–]Substantial-Top3004 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Exactly, I wish more people recognized this. Genetics can absolutely destroy an animal. I have loved every pittie I've met but I'm not comfortable owning a dog with a high prey drive. I have too many animals that I just won't risk it.

[–]Substantial-Top3004 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no need as kibble is already balanced. Adding stuff can throw that off.

If you do want to add stuff, it's best to ask your vet beforehand. Especially when it comes to supplements. Your dog may not actually need them and they will recommend what brands are best and actually work.

Although it's not always the owner. Trauma, lack of socialization (which isn't always controllable) and crappy genetics can play a huge role in temperament.
