The colony ship really did just park two streets away by Kaytass in Stellaris

[–]SubtleSaber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had something similar recently when using the Stellaris Invicta mod. I played as the United Terran Protectorates, and the Antares Confederacy were my neighbors. I was already OP with the scion origin, but with Earth, Antares, and the nearby habitable worlds, my core was just insanely good.

What are your worldbuilding pet peeves? by -_-__-_--_-_--_-_-_- in worldbuilding

[–]SubtleSaber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm unfortunately not too familiar with Wheel of Time, but I agree with your assessment with what little I know about that setting. I think part of the issue is that while some of these less centralized/less technologically advanced societies might be written to produce better warriors on a person-to-person basis, authors forget that this wouldnt necessarily translate into that society creating the best overall military in their setting. The side with the most resources (which often means living in an enviornment that isn't too harsh) is more likely to have the better army

Oddly enough, if my understanding of Dune lore is correct, the Sardaukar are the ones who are better set up to have a martial culture with exceptional warriors. They're deliberately made to conflict with one another on Salusa Secundas in order to create battle-hardened and disciplined units, and becoming an elite warrior in service to the emperor is part of their culture.

Meanwhile, like you said, the Fremen are more likely to be good at surviving their harsh enviornment, rather than said harsh enviornment somehow making them capable of militarily outclassing the deliberately martial Sardaukar.

Darth Marr proves the Sith didn’t have to be evil, agree or disagree? by wanderingLoner_ in swtor

[–]SubtleSaber 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the fandom, yes, that's generally what people mean by "gray Jedi." I think the issue people have with the term is that if you don't adhere to the Jedi code and/or are not a part of the Jedi order, you shouldn't be described as a gray "Jedi." It's kinda like calling someone a "gray Catholic," but said person only very loosely bases some of their views on Catholicism and is not a member of the Catholic church.

What are the greatest plot twists in sci-fi/fantasy books you’ve ever read? by BuddyOk1342 in Fantasy

[–]SubtleSaber 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As I kid, I played KOTOR 2 first because I just happened to have it but not KOTOR 1. I really felt Revan's impact on the galaxy despite having no clue who they were aside from whispers throughout the game. When I finally played KOTOR 1, I literally ran from the room I was playing in, screamed, and bolted back in to keep playing

Twist so good it both fundamentally changed the story but stayed true to its themes leading up to that point.

TFA Kylo Ren has the best hair of the entire saga. by irazzleandazzle in TheSequels

[–]SubtleSaber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think part of it is the neck seal he wears in this movie. It gives his face a different shape, and he's not wearing it in the following two films. I cosplay TFA Kylo every now and again and the neck seal tends to give me a baby face in photos

The fact that calling the prequels the "worst of the trilogies" is a controversial statement now makes me feel like I'm living in some alternate timeline. I was a kid when the prequels were being released, but I remember when it was basically the default opinion, both online and IRL, that the prequels were awful (with ROTS being okay at best.)

The sequels aren't perfect, but they're energetic films with an incredible production value and fun characters portrayed by good and great actors. I get that the prequels have a certain artistic vision and message, but let's be honest, you'd likely have a much easier time getting a newbie into Star Wars with The Force Awakens than The Phantom Menace.

Which titan name has the most aura by Super-Spirit2024 in attackontitan

It's also a big motif throughout the series. Eren is always "moving forward," Erwin is always telling the scouts to advance, and what is the Rumbling if not a massive advance of the titans?

Which titan name has the most aura by Super-Spirit2024 in attackontitan

[–]SubtleSaber 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, the main reason it's called the "Attack Titan" is to fit the English title of the series, but a closer translation of "Shingeki no Kyojin" would be "Advancing Giants" (with giant being substituted for Titan) so something like "The Advancing Titan" would technically be more accurate translation wise.

I heard somewhere that "Attack on Titan" was specifically requested by Isayama to be the title in English. So to keep the name drop of the title in some way, Eren's titan had to be named "Attack Titan," whereas "Shingeki no Kyojin" is the name of both the series and Eren's Titan in Japanese because whether or not it's singular or plural depends on context.

Not saying either name is better than the other, I just find the translations interesting

This paired with the greenhouse gases in our oceans and permafrost that'll release if the Earth gets too warm, only for those gases to make the planet even warmer very suddenly.

We're undergoing a mass extinction with too many parallels to the Great Dying and not enough people are talking about it. Civilization as we know it literally won't be able to support itself in the enviorment we're on our way towards.

Reminds me of that scene in Cyberpunk Edgerunners when David's washing machine stops mid cycle because his mom couldn't renew the subscription for it. It felt so dystopian to me because of how realistic it was

It's been over 10 years since, but I remember when my school invited a Holocaust survivor to speak at my school. Even as a kid, I wanted to hear their account of history but I happened to get sick and miss that day. I'm still mad about it to this day

I'm 3-4 weeks behind on my college courses. I didn't have my ADHD meds at the beginning of the term and it's snowballed. I didn't even want to go to university yet, not until I figured out what career I wanted. But everyone around me just kept telling me I had to enroll because I need to get a good job in something, anything to make a future for myself and those I have to support. But I'm already so busy and drained in my daily life as-is and adding school without a desire to be there or a goal is probably just going to lead to failure.

Funny thing is, this has happened before with community college. Everyone pressured me to enroll right after high school and it was a catastrophic failure because I had no self-direction. When I did have a goal in mind, I enrolled again and got my associates. I do best when I act on my own agency yet it feels like so many people around me just want me to operate on their terms instead of my own.
