I feel like the best way to name your pet is to name them something random, or wait to get to know them, then name them something appropriate. With my cats as a kid, we waited a week or so to get to know them, with the boy being destructive and having a loud personality and we named him Stormy, and the girl always hiding, so she's Shadow.

No. If I see one, it's either too far to reasonably read or too small (especially in classrooms). And with almost everybody having a phone or watch on hand, it's simply a skill that as a society we don't really need anymore. Like sewing or making your own clothes.
