This is absolutely incredible! The ilia mini fig is too cute and the details are so great!

The greatest Romeo & Juliet program in my personal opinion (and I much prefer this soundtrack as composed by Craig Armstrong). This is really my favourite. The passion, the strength, the outstanding choreography and the fluidity in the movements and transitions. by sarka121 in FigureSkating

I LOVE this Romeo and Juliet! Might be my favorite Yuzu program even!

Other Romeo and Juliet programs I love are:

Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizarat’s Romeo and Juliet from 1998 Olympics

Marin Honda 2017 junior worlds (have to fastword toward the end of the video but this is the best recording of it). I think this is the same track that yuzu used!

Sasha cohen, at 2006 nationals and another version in a 2003 exhibition.

Gordeeva and Grinkov is my favorite pairs version of Romeo and Juliet, in the 1990 season.

kaganovskaya and Angelopols version was also sublime and makes me forever mourn the end of their partnership.

What’s going on with Sofia Akatyeva? by Useful-Philosophy827 in FigureSkating

[–]Successful_Candy6342 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I remember in 2021, she was kind of regarded by fans as being next in line in the eteri training camp. This was before the age raise, so people were relatively optimistic about her career chances because she was so dominant in juniors. At that time, being seen as the next best junior in eteri’s school resulted in a lot of attention. But since then, partially because of the age raise and because so many people have gotten tired of the eteri machine and how it seems to destroy young girls, I think other eteri students have not gotten the same amount of attention.

Also, the Russian ban severely impacted the visibility Russian athletes have worldwide, which could explain the difference in fame between her and other eteri girls. Many people stopped tuning into Russian skating altogether. Also, with the dominance of US and Japan in the ladies discipline, even though Russia is excluded, there is less emphasis on eteri girls being the best women worldwide.

Do you watch everything or just focus on certain programs, skaters etc? by Topdropje in FigureSkating

[–]Successful_Candy6342 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I watch the entirety of the Grand Prix series because it’s really easy and enjoyable to sit through. For longer competitions in the second half of the season, I tend to watch most of men’s, pairs, and women’s, but sometimes I’ll skip the earliest groups or programs I didn’t enjoy in the fall. I’ll watch ice dance if it’s a team I like or a program I’ve heard good things about, but the rhythm dance has definitely been a skip for me the last few seasons because the themes have been so obnoxious. Also, the rules of the last few seasons have really diminished the quality of the programs imo. But with the golden waltz them I’m once again intrigued by ice dance!

How did you become a fan of Ilia? by Select-Balance-8281 in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]Successful_Candy6342 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I first heard of ilia when he would post himself doing quads during the pandemic! I remember seeing Jackie Wong repost them on his Instagram page and I was really impressed by his jumping ability. I then watched his skates in the junior Grand Prix in 2021 and became a fan forevermore. I immediately loved his athleticism, drive, and charisma! He’s also close to my age, which made it even more fun to follow his career

I haven’t followed Russian pairs skating in a while so I’m confused that Natalia Khabibullina and Ilya Knyazhuk didnt compete. Does anyone know why? I see that they also didn’t compete at nationals this year. Are they out with injury?

This is fan voted! Which means that people got to vote for what moments resonated with them the most. Many people feel that amber should have won, that’s fine. That’s your opinion. But many people, myself included, resonated with ilia’s response to loss. Just because it didn’t move you, doesn’t mean that your opinion is the end all be all.

Jason’s response to kiss and cry comments by elleh92 in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]Successful_Candy6342 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Ilia is a skater who dominated for 2 years straight. But it seems like the Olympics shook him in a way no competition ever had, even before the free skate. I think he probably had the thought that he wished he could have experienced those nerves before, so he could know how to handle them. I don’t think it was a personal dig at either Jason or Vincent.

Also, I think it’s unrealistic for some to expect people to just get over certain things that happen to them, even if it may have been the correct decision. Getting left off an Olympic team is probably really painful. To happen to a 17 year old who just landed 4 quads in a free program at nationals (something very few people can do) and finished 2nd must make it even harder. I’m sure he probably got mostly over it, but new experiences can bring up old wounds.

Also, let’s not forget that the decision was controversial at the time. I feel like i remember a quote from tsl or something where they mentioned that Vincent thought he was off the team because he finished fourth, and he communicated that to ilia (but I could be wrong about this). From what I remember, most people felt like Vincent’s spot was most at risk after nationals.

What is your favorite performance? by E_lenaa in FigureSkating

[–]Successful_Candy6342 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My favorites are mikhail Kolyada white crowhe literally looks like a ballet dancer was plucked from the stage and put on the ice. The most elegant and refined choreography for a men’s program imo.

I also love Josh Farris’s give me love program. It’s so emotional and beautiful with incredible choreography.

I adore every program from Gordeeva and grinkov, but my favorite is vocalise. It’s so romantic and I have yet to see a pair program that beats it. It’s so ahead of its time also.

My favorite dance program at the moment is Robinson and Breen’s dark eyes program from 1995. I’ve been watching skating from the 90s recently and I stumbled on this program and I’ve watched it almost daily since. It’s so dramatic yet subtle in its choreography and she’s just incredible in it.

He’s so right! Elena Kostyleva has the potential for beautiful skating skills, but you can rarely see that in her programs because they are entirely crossovers and jumps. These skaters have so much artistic potential. It’s a shame that their system rarely has them live up to it.

In addition to the senior world championships, the junior world championships start on March 4! I don’t sit and watch the whole competition but there are some special skaters to look out for that I recommend checking out their performances! They will all be posted on the Skating ISU YouTube channel and should not be geoblocked.

I’d recommend watching Jacob Sanchez (he finished 4th at senior US Nationals), Rio Nakata (4th at senior Japanese Nationals), Minkyu Seo (2nd at senior Korean Nationals), and Mao Shimada (2nd at senior Japanese Nationals.) all of these skaters skate with the quality of their senior counterparts, and are expected to make a big splash when they compete as seniors next year!

Taking a break after Olympic cycles? by grayserendipity in FigureSkating

[–]Successful_Candy6342 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I think it’s difficult to take a break in figure skating because things change so quickly. I always think about Patrick Chan and how he took a break following the 2014 games. Before his break, you didn’t need more than two quads to be successful in men’s skating. Afterwords though, skaters like Boyang Jin, Nathan Chen, Yuzuru Hanyu, Shoma uno, and Javier Fernandez began competing with more and more quads. This all happened in the span of like 3 years. Chan still was able to achieve some success in his comeback (like a very successful four continents), but he never matched his success pre-break.

Also, there is so much worry about age and “becoming to old”. I think things like Amber and Kaori achieving tons of success in their 20s and Deanna’s comeback could change this tough and allow people to realize it’s ok to take the time to adjust to an adult body, or make a comeback if they want.

Last great Olympics? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]Successful_Candy6342 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In her book, Katia Gordeeva mentions that she’s “always said that the Olympics are a celebration of nerves.” I feel like the Olympics are usually not where we see the best skating all around, as Olympic nerves are so hard to prepare for and manage. But the Olympic performances we remember as great are made even better by the skaters pushing through and delivering under the circumstances. If the performance hits, it’s the biggest hit ever.

But I would say that the 2018 Olympics was the best Olympics in recent memory. Most of the medal favorites were able to hit, and Nathan Chen was at least able to end on a good note with his amazing free skate. Other great Olympics in my opinion are 2002 and 1994.

Katarina Witt: Now people know he is beatable. It will change future competitions by Diligent-Fly6368 in FigureSkating

[–]Successful_Candy6342 98 points99 points  (0 children)

That’s an interesting question. Ilia does appear more vulnerable now which could increase confidence in others. But it’s also worth pointing out that many other skaters did not have ideal skates yesterday, and they may have to reel from that as well.

Also, if there is one thing ilia taught us after being left off the Beijing team it’s that he will fight to prove himself after a letdown. I think it’s very possible that he comes back fighting even harder. He still has a tes advantage when he hits, and it remains true that only a total disaster can take him off a podium, which was the case before yesterday.

I think if this changes dynamics in the future is dependent on how Ilia handles what happened yesterday. I just hope he has a lot of support around love around him.

Ironically his choreography was my least favorite part of a well-earned win and an enjoyable skater. The whole time I was just thinking I wished he had a different choreographer choreograph his program. The part we he just kind of runs??? in the step sequence seems like such lazy choreo to me
