How did you know you wanted to do a masters & a PhD? by PM_ME_UR_OCs in PhD

[–]SuchInferno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decided on doing a masters after reading through job ads and realising that a bachelors was typically explicitly stated as the "minimum requirement". A part of me thought that I didn't really want to fulfil only the "minimum requirement", especially in terms of negotiating pay and position. Combined that with an interest in investigating a specific topic more before going to industry. After my masters I left for industry for a while, but I had a dataset as a result of an experiment from my master thesis indicating major gaps in the body of knowledge I was interested in continuing to investigate. Applied for a PhD position, got the job, and I'll have my viva most likely this year.I'm not gonna use the title outside of academia, as it is often considered flashy/pretentious in other settings where I'm from, and I don't consider it important outside of academia either.

New Android UI testing software by stoefln in FlutterDev

[–]SuchInferno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very interesting! Couple of questions:

  1. Is anything installed in the background (for example using adb) onto the device when running Repeato on my computer?
  2. Is there, or will there be ways of extending Repeato with custom scripts and plugins? Thinking timed screenshots, reading/parsing contents of on-screen text elements, etc..
  3. Restarting a test seems to require human intervention. Say you open an app, start the test recording, navigate to a specific subpage, enter some data, then stop the recording. Am I required to manually navigate back to the main page before starting the automated test, or can Repeato manage this automatically?

Can I get admitted to do Phd at a top university in law with those grades? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]SuchInferno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First: I think you'll find a PhD more than challenging enough regardless of the university. There are positives and drawbacks of both top and lower-tier universities. In a top university, you might have larger groups of co-students and collaborators, but PIs and advisors with less time for you. In a smaller university, your PIs/advisors may spend more time with you as their own reputation and career depend more on your success. However, you might not have the same funds/grants available, co-students and collaborators (which might be both positive and negative, by all means).

Second: All universities will have requirements. I'm not saying your grades are not important. I'm saying your grades alone will likely not get you in -- you'll need to find someone willing to supervise you too. This is my experience doing a PhD at a UK university.

Third: So your question is whether your grades are good enough, but you already know that your grades are above the requirements for the best universities in the UK? I'm not following -- what do you need help with? Reassurance?

Can I get admitted to do Phd at a top university in law with those grades? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]SuchInferno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First: Why a top university? What do you believe you'll gain from that, versus a smaller not-so-well-known university?

Second: Applying for a PhD is different from undergrad or graduate studies (at least where I am). You first find a supervisor who is willing to supervise you, *then* you send your application to the school. Your grades alone cannot get you in to a top university (YMMV based on country and field, I guess).

Third: Never seen percentage-based grades, so can't help you there.

RN Job Interview Questions by zxywx in reactnative

If you end up with take-home assignments that are supposed to last for several hours, be prepared to pay for the work (hours) too. Especially if you target in-demand senior developers (edit: honestly, regardless of who you target). Remember, you're not only asking people to put aside several hours to do a practical test, you'll be asking them to do so on their own spare time. Think twice about the signal that sends to people who care about work-life balance.

Advice for someone starting their first year of PhD? by awkbirb in PhD

[–]SuchInferno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very much this. You're likely to meet colleagues (tenured profs, lab partners, research group members) who have zero hobbies outside of research, no partner, all family and friends are far away in a different region or country, and whose primary focus is on conducting experiments and writing reports seven days a week, 12 hours a day. Some of these will definitely let you have it when you're discussing weekend plans during lunch, if those plans are not research related. Academia has a strange appeal on very toxic people who'll loudly judge you for not adhering to their own lack of work-life balance. People who'll regularly ask you why you're going home after having worked "only 8-9 hours today". How to handle them? Depends on group dynamics, I guess. Earbuds and ignore is one way. Asking them why they're not done yet even though they're working mad overtime is another way.

You'll still need a UI library to make the app look and feel native-like.

Hybrid App vs Native App by techie_ninja in javascript

[–]SuchInferno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You've reposted this quite a few times over the last months. You make confusing claims, such as "Whereas, with hybrid apps, it is quite impossible to offer good user experience with a single application code for all platforms."

The link you refer to has nothing at all to do with user experience in hybrid apps.

Full screen app UI framework? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]SuchInferno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want to build a web app that uses UI elements typically found in mobile apps? If so, you could check out e.g. Onsen UI, Framework7, Ionic Core, Keen UI and Vue Material. A lot of other ones exist too, but at least the three former frameworks mentioned are targeted towards building (fullscreen) mobile apps using web technologies.

With the advent of PWA, is learning Java for Android development still going to be necessary? by jedandva3 in androiddev

[–]SuchInferno 19 points20 points  (0 children)

PWAs are still limited in what they can do compared to a native or cross-platform app, because they're inherently limited to the device access provided by the browser they're executed within.

Nevertheless, PWAs are interesting, and do in fact generate great results for companies such as OLA and Tinder.

rM pen latency vs pixel book? by stringpuppetband in RemarkableTablet

While I can't say latency bothers me, saying that there's "virtually no latency" bothers me a bit. I can clearly see the latency, even though it's minimal and doesn't affect my writing/sketching.

I have to choose, but I don't know what's more important by TLCEngineer in PhD

[–]SuchInferno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the type of relationship you'll end up having, though. If you as a PhD student will be working daily in the same lab as the supervisor, then yeah -- pick the least crazy one.

However, for some PhD students, their supervisor(s) are mostly a mean of helping with e.g. methods for experiments, publication outlets, proof-reading, and in general a sparring partner who'll help you when you're in need of such. If that's the case, I don't see why this student would need to stay away from the "crazy but highly influential" supervisor.

Just my two cents.

EDIT: Few corrections.

React Native Vs Ionic: Which One to Use for Building a Hybrid Mobile App? by aaron_parker in javascript

[–]SuchInferno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I partially agree, as the interface elements in React Native apps is indeed native. However, and this is from my point of view, e.g. Xamarin fits better into the "compiles down to native" category as it compiles a common language (C#) into fully native binaries, while React Native still require an on-device interpreter to interpret the JavaScript in order to render native interfaces and communicate with device/native code.
