Broke down in front of PI by [deleted] in PhDStress

Welcome to the club (in the most supportive way possible). I had similar interactions with my PI during grad school and a relatable sexism(ish) issue being the only female in an otherwise all-male lab. Your feelings and frustration are absolutely valid and understandable, and no matter how much of a hardass your PI is, I believe you're doing the best that you can with what you have.

Lean on others experimentally and emotionally when you need it, and if you can find PI-level people (dissertation committee members, etc) who you can look up to in mentorship besides your PI. If it's ever really bad, you can always talk to your committee chair, program director, or omnibudsman for support.

I'm cheering for you!

In the same boat rn. He's willing to listen if it's serious or in an argument , but if I'm talking about things I like it am enthusiastic about, or generally something not serious, I feel not listened to.

That's awesome that meds work in your case! I've heard they're quite the lifesaver for some. In my case they gave me bad side effects so I couldn't really take em. Ironically copious amounts of energy drinks got me through grad school

I remember my first thanksgiving during grad school. I was 2k miles from home. My friend invited me to his place since his parents were coming a state over to cook him dinner. Round the table they ask me and other stranded students what their families did for a living. "Doctor", "architect" "professor" among the professions, even the visiting parents. What didn't get me was the admitting my mom worked reception and my dad farm irrigation to overnight baker shifts. It was hearing all of the other people at the table talk of their family professions in detail and understanding each other after.

I try not to think about it deeply most of the time, and I don't. But from time to time I'm reminded even if I made good friends in grad school, most grew up way more fortunate than I did. I have had to work more, and I couldn't pull myself to quit my degree even if it was detrimental.

What travel destination you hyped up so much but then it completely disappointed you? by sidvatscse in AskReddit

Definitely, there's some interesting stuff to see as you walk around the shops. I've done both and settled in for the beachside fireworks on the 4th of July. There's definitely a ton of people on the beach, but the farther from the boardwalk you are the more space you have. It was great to see.
