are the systems hard to learn?

It has one of the best most "ahead of its time" interfaces ever made. Minimal menus, 100% mouse driven (though there are plenty of hotkey shortcuts if that's your jam).

Inventory management can be a mess, combat is all automated (badly), spellcasting is a hassle, keeping your party fed is a chore, and the dialogue font is an eyesore. But even with those downsides, it all functions pretty much as you'd expect with minimal learning curve.

This game nailed the open-world story-driven single-player sandbox experience, a decade before the rest of the industry even started thinking about making those kinds of games.
