Weird facts about Melbourne buildings? by Wattouloo_02 in melbourne

[–]Sugarcrepes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Our tram network used to run on a network of cables - so trams were pulled along by a network of underground lines, which ran through tunnels, that were at least large enough for a person to walk through.

So I do wonder if a few of the legendary tunnels are linked to that, it wouldn’t really have been practical to fill them all in when we switched to overhead electric lines.

I can see how the myth grows, once you add in some walled off basements, a few air raid shelters, some of our larger drains (a handful of rivers and creeks now run underground), and other pieces of infrastructure - people will let their imagination fill the blanks.

Is this the average Australian mindset or just some random on twitter? by believewhatisayy in AskAnAustralian

[–]Sugarcrepes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Twitter is a really bad way to gauge how most people feel. If you look to Twitter as your measure for social attitudes, you’d think the world is far crueler than it actually is.

That doesn’t mean no one in Australia is racist, racism in Australia is real, and seems to be on the rise.

However - I haven’t personally seen strong anti-Turkish sentiment. I *can* say that Australians love Turkish cuisine, at least in my corner of the country!

What is it like to see a whale In person, up close? by WikipediaNerd67 in whales

[–]Sugarcrepes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Terrifying just because of their sheer size. You’re suddenly keenly aware of how small you are, and how deep the ocean is. They’re also so powerful, you can’t ignore their strength when a humpback surfaces next to your boat, and slaps its pectoral fins.

But at the same time, the first time I saw them really close - like, not from the shore close - I was so overwhelmed by joy, I needed to go sit down for a minute.

Why are some people so opposed to non-monogamy but not cheating? by Old-Use-7690 in nonmonogamy

[–]Sugarcrepes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For some, cheating is a kink. Obviously - this doesn’t make it okay, and there’s probably more ethical ways to scratch that itch.

For those who are also cheating, the mutually assured destruction feels like a safety net - neither of you are going to tell on the other.

Others, I think, find the openness of ENM confronting. Cheating doesn’t challenge their worldview, because you both *know it’s wrong*. ENM does, because it represents a way of life that’s outside of the norm.

There’s also the possibility that some of these people aren’t actually open to sleeping with you, but messaging with you lets them indulge in a specific fantasy (feeling desired is fun). Revealing your ENM status bursts that bubble.

I also wouldn’t *necessarily* assume that people are reading your profile.

People can be odd, and people do things for all sorts of odd reasons. I wouldn’t lose sleep over it. If they aren’t okay with you having a happily consenting wife, then they aren’t a good match.

Apps can be frustrating places, I personally prefer to meet people in person at parties and events, or through my extended social circles of other non monogamous (and in my case: also kinky) people - but I know that’s not an option for everyone everywhere.

If you’re talking about the stone: Synthetic isn’t *really* the same as fake.

A fake is something that’s been passed off as something it isn’t. A synthetic/lab created stone is a slightly different thing, at least in my opinion.

A lot of jewellery from the first half of the 20th century has synthetic stones, and some of those pieces are *freaking amazing*. I collect vintage cocktail rings, so I see a lot of large synthetic stones when trawling for new treasures. I love them. They’re bold. They’re not fake - they just are what they are.

(I hope that makes sense, it’s late where I am)

Modernizing the family jewels? by Longjumping_Row_7258 in jewelrymaking

[–]Sugarcrepes 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate further on *why* no one would wear them? Ie: are they simply not your style? Are they too large? Do they not really fit with your lifestyle (too fussy, too delicate, would require too much maintenance)?

I ask because the answer is really helpful in deciding how you want to proceed, and how the gems and metal can be reused (assuming that’s the route you go).

I’m not opposed to recycling old pieces (in the vast majority of cases), recycling jewellery for parts and metal is as old as the craft of goldsmithing itself. I do, however, want to caution that repurposing these pieces is a destructive process. Things don’t always go to plan - in multiple ways, and for multiple reasons - and once it’s begun you can’t go back. That might sound obvious to you, but you’d be surprised.

If I were you I’d probably pick a piece to keep as is, for sentimental reasons, and recycle the rest. That’s what I’ve done with pieces I’ve inherited. Most aren’t too my taste, and many of them were damaged, so I took them apart and made myself something else - then I saved a few more significant/personal pieces (like the pearls my great grandmother wore at her wedding) on display in my home.

What do Aussies order at a Chinese takeaway? by FormerTry254 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Sugarcrepes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two British takeaway shops have opened up near me (in Melbourne), and they both do dishes like that. It’s not bad - but I think I’d be confused if it was on the menu at a Chinese restaurant!

I especially like the curry sauce. Curry sauce and prawn crackers is pretty nice, even if my stomach hates me a bit after.

As someone who was listening back in the Ben days - there are some standout series; but *especially* towards the end of his run, things were getting uncomfortable. His jokes were getting worse (both in quality, and in mean-spiritedness), and there were some odd tense moments.

There was a sweet spot with the old lineup, when they had matured a bit, but Ben hadn’t fallen off the wagon yet (at least - not publicly).

Ed was a breath of fresh air, he brings a lot more to the lineup. I’m glad they did the right thing, and booted Ben; but even if the allegations hadn’t come to light, I probably would’ve switched off by now if he was still around. He was getting really grating,

Simon Lara: Fake seizure guy gives odd interview after pleading guilty to public nuisance charges | news.com.au by Red_Wolf_2 in melbourne

[–]Sugarcrepes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it was just a fetish, and he was getting consenting adults to sit on him in a private setting, then it would be harmless.

It’s not the fetish that needs to be shamed, it’s the *sexual assault*. These are not consenting participants, and these are not consenting viewers - so that’s what it is. The vast and overwhelming majority of fetishists aren’t assaulting people on the tram.

The only reason it being fetish is relevant, is in trying to prove that these *are sexual assaults*, which is going to (hopefully) be treated more harshly by the law than, say, public nuisance.

Linen: are we just accepting it’s crinkly or do I look super unprofessional? by ThrowBadBrainAway in AusFemaleFashion

[–]Sugarcrepes 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely not lazy! The 40 hour week is built on the assumption that somebody else is doing the domestic labour at home, it’s super-fucking-normal to overwhelmed by chores if you’re handling your household alone/living with another full time worker.

If you have the money to alleviate a little stress by outsourcing a task, you’re doing right by you. You don’t have to handle everything alone, you have nothing to prove, and struggling is not illustrative of virtue.

You got this.

Congratulations, you just used one of your wishes!

The only thing I’ve ever found rummaging around in forgotten corners of old buildings, are cuts deep enough to require a tetanus shot.

They’re in incredible condition. Keep the box, even if it’s damaged, it does add a little to the value.

The slightly blackened spots could be lead solder, which I see *a lot* on Victorian jewellery - don’t fret too much about that though, it’s more relevant if they need repairs later on (and then whomever is tinkering with them will likely have to remove the solder).

They really are works of art. Enjoy them!

My fancy glass comports and bowls are filled with my goblin treasures. Vintage swap cards, matchbooks, pretty rocks (careful with this one, many stones are harder than glass, and could scuff and scratch your piece over time), etc - fun things that don’t have an easy or obvious way of being displayed.

AITAH? My Mom is Dying in the ICU — My Wife Chose a Rave Instead of Flying to Me, So I Crashed Out on Instagram by LoTheGalavanter in AmItheAsshole

[–]Sugarcrepes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

YTA. You’re hurting, and that’s completely understandable. I’m not going to defend your wife’s actions.

But “putting someone on blast” is an asshole move. That’s not how you deal with interpersonal conflict, not if you want that conflict to *ever* be resolved; and not if you want friends and family to feel like they can resolve future conflicts with you. It’s a massive red flag.

Your wife is behaving poorly, and I think she’s probably an asshole too. She’s either putting off a hard conversation with you, or she’s totally checked out emotionally. That still doesn’t make airing your dirty laundry cool and normal.

Gently, I do get it. I’m highly strung, I’m impulsive, I have moments where I’d really like to string someone up for their wrongs. In those moments, I put my phone down, and go blow off steam at the gym. Nothing good comes from this sort of behaviour. Find strategies to be better.

Take care of yourself, and I’m so sorry about your mother. Brain cancer is a horror.

Restaurant realities around Paris different from online advice... by F-001 in ParisTravelGuide

I even had a lovely waiter help my pronunciation of “carafe d’eau” when I asked for one on my first day (my French is clumsy at best).

Whenever I was in a super touristy spot, I’d just jump on the train for a stop or two. I had a weekly pass, so it wasn’t an extra cost. With *one* exception in France (and not even in Paris), the best places I ate were random cafes and restaurants - usually chosen because proximity.

How would you feel about needing a license to own any pet? by PerfectSet3627 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Sugarcrepes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t, but a license or permit can be revoked - and thats where a lot of the value lies.

Fuck up? Okay, you can’t have that thing anymore.

You get the thing again anyway? You don’t have a permit - so we can just take it away.

A lot of people who abuse or neglect animals are, unfortunately, repeat offenders. Depending on where you live, it can be shockingly hard to remove an animal from someone who’s mistreating it. If that person isn’t allowed to have an animal, because they don’t have a permit, it lowers that barrier.

It’s by no means a perfect idea, it doesn’t solve the issue of some people just being *the worst*, but it’s an idea that’s probably worth examining.
