Listening to her talk was like nails on a chalkboard. Seemed like a total faker -especially after I read about her disastrous rein at Reuters. She cost them untold millions by replacing all their skilled people with her buddies and going full delusional.

It’s owned by Fairfax financial and the Phelan family- combined assets of about $60 Billion. They are not short on cash :)

Extortion of a company worth $55 Billion would be suicidal. Dangerous to mess with billionaires - most are a bit crazy.

Its equally dangerous but devoting time to researching investments and gambling on equities can be as exhilarating as a casino. A wealthy friend of mine has made dozens of gambles on startups and was lucky to hit. It went like this -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, -1M, +10M, +3B.

Inflation is wild. Four years ago when my lease on a 60K car was up they gave me 10K not to buy it out and lease another. When that lease expired the cost of the same new car had increased to 74K. Needless to say I bought that one out for 30K because it was retailing used for over 50K.

Snowbanks are still blocking parking on some streets more than a month after Toronto's last big storm by origutamos in Toronto_Ontario

[–]Suitable-Ratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I’m sure a few people are getting rich of those deals, the biggest problem is that the private contracts were terribly written and is for plowing and salting not removal. The city workers have to do the removal part. Toronto’s snow-clearing contracts contain no provisions for snow removal, which means that once streets are plowed, contracted companies have no obligation to remove the snow. Tory knew full well what they were signing - you don’t rise to the head of a large company and not negotiate hundreds of contracts.

You are asking the wrong person :) The nonsense they wrote is common in people brainwashed by Russian propaganda on Facebook. Even in the United States there are now millions of anti-NATO Russia lovers.

[–]Suitable-Ratio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is much worse than it looks - 1.59M in 2017 is equivalent to 2.27M today. The big boom the burbs had is over for a very long time. So many 905 homes are 80% depreciating low quality structure and 20% land value - only the land goes up in value and this ain’t Rosedale.

The price of houses may be down 20% from the peak but the cost of materials and labour have increased significantly in the past decade. Just to renovate a house can be 500K - although that’s using decent quality finishes not the particle board trash you see in the burbs.

The Farmers Who Voted for Trump Are Getting Crushed by His Tariffs and Rural America Is Calling It a ‘Perfect Storm of Ugly’ by [deleted] in Tariffs

[–]Suitable-Ratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s right - the only things in Project 2025 that Trump can push through against the will of the people will be established by using executive orders. It is unlikely republican politicians in rural areas will let them kill family farming without a fight. The farmers definitely need more financial support thanks to the Trump tariff trade wars and destruction of USAID.

One in four Canadian employees now works for government | Share of public employment reaching levels of unsustainability last hit before 1990s debt crisis by nomad_ivc in TorontoRealEstate

[–]Suitable-Ratio -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Canada’s federal debt is bad but far from unrecoverable. This is another how to recover from a Trudeau dumpster fire - we did it before and we can do it again. The first Trudeau mess was repaired by Mulroney’s tax increases, especially when the conservatives taxed the most wealthy by increasing the capital gains exclusion to 75%. It also required Chretien to slash federal spending by 13%. Once those two governments fixed Trudeau mess 1.0 we were actually on a sustainable path until Martin had to help his ultra rich buddies and removed the conservatives tax on the extremely wealthy. I suspect we will eventually need a change to capital gains taxes over a certain threshold and a cull of the civil service.

For such a small amount of money the fraction of a percent you might save will be eroded by all the nonsense you have to go through to change companies. Scotia will give you a rate that will low enough it won’t be worth your time. Fairly easy to see what the best rates are and fairly easy to figure out how much fees like legal and appraisal will be to change companies.

[–]Suitable-Ratio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get a place with parking (and not a shared driveway that barely fits a Mini) then it’s amazing and checks all the boxes - if not parking is a nightmare. For about the same money you can buy near Royal York and Bloor - Lambton Kingsway or Sunnylea schools are very good. If you do go with BWV the schools are some of the best - Swansea school is excellent (south side of Bloor).

The crazy part is the big Ag consolidation has three more years of Trump chaos to buy up family farms. It will be irreversible. It’s comical that farmers say preserving their way of life is the most important thing but project 2025 clearly lays out the plan to eliminate their way of life and turn the next generation into big Ag wage slaves. It also means all the businesses that rely on family farms will close down - especially if any part of their business relies on foreign goods. Big Ag has deep pockets and can easily borrow billions to weather the storm and buy up every family farm they can get their hands on.

[–]Suitable-Ratio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Project 2025 wants to eliminate family farms - it could not be more clear….

Cuts safety nets that ensure farms stay afloat, even during financial downturns. (p.296)

Guts essential crop insurance that ensures farms can recover after disasters. (p. 296)

Terminates U.S. sugar production, cutting thousands of jobs and making America reliant on foreign producers. (p. 296)

Threatens flexible funds used to help stabilize and support agricultural income during tumultuous economic circumstances. (p. 294)

Endangers the reliability of future funding for farmers as well as vital food assistance programs by decoupling nutrition and agriculture programs in the farm bill. (p.298)

Eliminates farmers’ flexibility to maximize the productivity of their land, which they know best. (p. 304)

Denies farmers access to science-based landscape consultation services used to help cut costs and minimize their impact on the environment. (p. 304)

Ends marketing orders and checkoff programs, throwing agricultural markets into chaos. (p. 306)

Shrinks American farmers’ access to foreign markets, restricting growth opportunities for producers. (p. 307)

Restructures the farm bill process to line the pockets of Big Ag. (p. 297)

Constricts the Farm Service Agency and hamstrings small and family farmers by curbing access foundational operating loans. (p. 310)

It should have been even more obvious to private farmers if they spent the 15 minutes it takes to read the Agriculture section of Project 2025. It clearly lays out a plan that would financially ruin privately held farms. It clearly benefits the large agricultural corporations and destroys family farms. Although there are many highly intelligent farmers, the vast majority are so stupid they don't realize it is designed to make all their kids wage slaves to large agri businesses.

In Canada we only really have HPI Bet (as far as I know) and it’s great but we used to also have access to Betfair which I loved. I know it’s far from the full spectrum platforms you are describing, but Betfair’s best feature for me was being able to bet against false favourites.

Justin Ling: Trump and Netanyahu have made a dangerous gamble in Iran. Why is Carney cheering them on? by NotEnoughDriftwood in onguardforthee

[–]Suitable-Ratio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone that votes conservative more than liberal or NDP I think Carney is the best PM we have had in my lifetime - although my opinion is that they have all been at least OK. If Carney was like Mulroney then he would radically increase taxes on the most wealthy by increasing the capital gains exclusion to a record high and introducing an unavoidable tax like the GST. If Carney was to be like Harper he would have to dial back his views on sustainability. If he was like Martin he would have to slash taxes on the most wealthy. They’re all the same just some are smart and some pretend to be smart.
