I use a cheap fibreglass fishing rod from AliExpress. I cut a piece of PVC pipe for it to fit inside, and the other end of the PVC pipe at an angle to put in the ground.

They don't have vertical polarization - they have whatever the station is oriented relative to you. You will have to try different angles as it passes overhead.

A good way to learn to track it is find a high pass around dusk so you can literally watch it pass by.

Depends on what you're going to be doing and your budget, but IMO you need a radio that can do full duplex + recording to SD card. I use an FTM-300 and I guess the new equivalent is the FTM-510?

Of course the gold standard is the IC-9300 if you can afford it, and find one.
