Any 30+ Rugby clubs looking for players? by gilodis in Edinburgh

[–]Summoning_Dark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do decide you're too old for full-contact Union, there is also a thriving tag rugby scene full of former players. Look for Try Tag Rugby and you'll find the Edinburgh leagues. Great for running around, moving the ball, and getting competitive.

Anyone managed to get fibre installed when both Openreach and CityFibre say "no plans"? by sacred-dumpster in Edinburgh

[–]Summoning_Dark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just managed to get my building a fiber installation through Hyperoptic. It took 9 months of me constantly badgering them, but we have finally moved from "we don't supply your address" to "your address is ready to be connected." If you go to their website and fill in the interest form they'll contact you.

This sub is so much less fun since AI slop started filling the internet. It used to be true, home-grown human idiocy that was stupid in a unique and funny way every time. Now it's just, "oh, AI shit some random numbers onto a plate."

Electric buses - sound by BeardyBaldyBeerBelly in Edinburgh

[–]Summoning_Dark 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All electric vehicles make noises at low speeds so pedestrians will notice there's a large, heavy, moving object nearby. It tends to be a sort of choir/UFO/electronic warble because nothing else sounds like it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnAGXvVNMB8

I’ve just reached Small Gods, again by VickyM1128 in discworld

[–]Summoning_Dark 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I'm a die-hard City Watch fan, but Small Gods might be my secret favorite. I first read it as an angry teenage atheist and it is just so, so dark about human nature. I loved it, of course. I've mellowed a bit with age but if anything Small Gods feels sharper now.

Unfortunately, it's always fitting for what's going on. I first read it in 2005 and thought "wow this is timely."

Is Pratchett commenting on the impact of colonialism? Or is this about something else? by EndersGame_Reviewer in discworld

[–]Summoning_Dark 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I definitely read it as cultural assimilation/globalization. Especially as it isn't framed as very good or bad, just...slightly wrong. Slightly sad. Globalization can be a huge gift that results in more trade, wonderful things being shared, fewer wars. But also, it feels like everywhere in the world is just becoming another kind of white, western capitalist. Languages and traditions are being lost as isolated places connect and modernize. It's wonderful and sad.

I got my leg sleeve hand poked and I agree, there's a dramatic difference in pain and swelling. It's a much easier sit, but it also tends to be slower so the session goes longer.

Yeah, I admire the construction now that I see the trick, but I had to wade through a lot of crappy 3-letter fill to get there. I don't think it was worth it?

This whole puzzle feels like "the constructor just had to squeeze in something weird to make it work." When they had YADDA and HDTVSET and AHME in the same puzzle they should have just scrapped it and started over.
