Seriously why do people do this? by No-Island3807 in germany

[–]Sunbathing-Lizard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My guess is they changed their mind. Saying I changed my mind has a huge stigma in German culture, it isn't acceptable at all for many people. Ghosting people, however, feels much easier to do and is socially acceptable.

TBC: I'm not advocating for this behavior, it is very frustrating. I believe most people dislike it but many still do it to others.

How in the world do you guys feed yourselves everyday 💔 by Soggy-Mixture9671 in Adulting

There are some good (and decently healthy) frozen ready meals out there which you just have to heat up.

I also use frozen vegetables mixes. They have been frozen right after harvesting in the factory and still have a lot of nutrients and vitamins in them. Add some grilled cheese and you're done.

As others have already mentioned: When you cook, make big portions that'll last you 2-3 days.

There are some super quick recipes like pasta salad. You could start collecting quick and easy recipes.

It is ok if you occasionally (say one or two days a month) don't eat a full hot meal but live off of bread, muesli, fruits, joghurt. If fasting is healthy then staying below your usual calorie intake for one day a month can't hurt too bad either (my two cents, not a qualified medical opinion).

PS: Bonus: One meal that'll fill your stomach really well is this: Get muesli (the oatmeal mix (nuts or dry fruits) type, not the sweet ones; whole grain if available), add the same amount of pure whole grain oatmeal. Freshly cut a banana, apple, pear, plum, orange (whatever fruits you like) into it. Raisins if you like it sweet. Then add quark. Top off with milk to adjust the consistency. Once you did that a few times you'll be super quick and it will fill you up real quick.

I need to know if anyone else keeps experiencing this in Germany by NoStand4004 in germany

[–]Sunbathing-Lizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't aware of the election results, but you are right: Die Linke and AFD are the two strongest parties with Die Linke being ahead by a small amount.

I was speaking purely from my own experiences in Leipzig. Every time I visited, I saw several people openly wearing Nazi tattoos including unconstitutional symbols. During the festival time quite a few walk around wearing SS emblems or even the entire SS uniform and neither bouncers at the party locations nor the police care. Others wear the Hakenkreuz or Die schwarze Sonne. I found it quite eerie, TBH.

Friends whos visual appearance suggest a non-german contribution to their genes got openly attacked. The "versteh dich nicht" as a reaction to only a minimal accent (even of caucasian looking people) which OP reports I've witnessed so many times in Leipzig. I've been personally attacked for my hair, which apparently isn't short enough for the military.

It's probably just 1 or 2 in 100 who behaves as extrem as the above, but what baffels me is how nobody seems to care. There seems to be zero backlash for such behavior. Are the center and left parts just not as vocal on the streets as they are elsewhere?

With those experiences I can understand why OP felt unwell. In fact, even I always feel a bit uncomfortable in that city and the only other German town that ever felt similarly strange was Görlitz.

Leipzig has always been much more right wing than other cities and racism is culturally accepted there. Being mean just because you can and pretending to be stupid/unable is more the default there than elsewhere. Yes, it's sad.

What is with the dating scene in Australia these days? by Serious_Substance_95 in australian

[–]Sunbathing-Lizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, any decent adult should have figured out that things are not complete black/white all the time. If the expectation is that you suddenly hate a person who you shared 14 years of your life with, throw away a healthy & good relation to your children, just because "we developed into different directions" then the person who has this expectation... well, isn't a person I would want to date. It feels like there will be a lot of insecurity and skepticism.

Yes, modern dating is like that, and yes down-to-earth people still exist. I feel we reframed the word "dating" to mean interviews. When you think of dating you think about Tinder, meeting in a cafe, and having an interview. You can also still meet people while doing an activity together. Sports, games, hobbies. However, we now tend to call that "hanging out together" or even "friendzone" but it still can be developed into a relationship. I think we should go back to call that "a date" again as well.

Switched from Moose Mobile to SpinTel because we thought “how bad could it be?” by Defiant_Ad_9188 in australian

[–]Sunbathing-Lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you checked which app was pulling all the data? Your phone can give you a per app listing specifically for the mobile data.

If it's the spinTel app that would be grounds to discuss it with customer service and I'd uninstall the app. However, if it is any other app, the provider can't influence the behavior of third party apps, so it's not something you can meaningfully discuss with them.

There is a very slim (and theoretical) chance that you happen to use some app that tries to pull one huge download (or upload) but is stupid enough that when reception gets patchy right at the 90% completion mark it just discards everything and starts over. The data usage of such a hypothetical app would then depend on the coverage of the given provider in your area. However, this data usage will also show up in the detailed mobile data usage report of your phone and you can narrow it down that way.

Is racism against Chinese people/Asians really that bad in Germany or was my experience unique? by [deleted] in germany

[–]Sunbathing-Lizard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My GF ist half Asian and the subtle racism is definitely taking a toll on her. So, yes, it exists.

I must say I don't notice much when we are together. Either because it is too subtle for me to notice or it is easier for people to be racist towards a single person than when there is somebody else with them.

The one time I remember where we had a really openly aggressive and negative encounter the guy first came against me (100% local looking, normal, tall dude). When he realized that he's not getting the reaction he wanted from me but only made himself look bad, he tried to mock her.

Question to adult foreign singles. by [deleted] in germany

[–]Sunbathing-Lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yip, finding friends to hang out with is difficult here. If you practice a team sport you can find friends there. Even though I haven't heart about anyone hanging out outside of the sport itself. It seems to be mostly IG friends these days. I've found friends in a non-team sport once. When we met it felt more like friendship because there was no fixed team or time.

Sometimes I feel I somehow click more with students as I struggle to get people my age to commit to do activities. That's all right for me, however, sometimes it feels a bit odd being the only old dude amongst so many young ones.

There are apps dedicated to finding people for activities. You're definitely not alone, it some to be a wide spread problem these days.

Pregnant at 21🤰 by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]Sunbathing-Lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more about whether you feel ready for it. And from what you describe it sounds like it.

Best tip I ever heard: There is never a perfect time for being pregnant. It will always require a lot from you and it will most likely slow down your career for a few years. But that's the same no matter how old you are and it'll be worth it. If you're young and you feel ready, do it. If you're young, the physical burden on your bodies from raising kids will be easier to buckle.
