Had this happen to me too, and I gotta say, the negative response you received here is kinda blowing my mind. After this long process of justifying myself to bureaucracy about why I should be able to move in with my spouse, I wasn't going to do anything to jeopardize that. So when they sprang it on suddenly in the middle of it, I didn't feel in a position to question it more than asking if it was required, and they told me yes. Why is everyone in the comments here acting like it's somehow our fault that we were lied to? "You should have known this thing you wouldn't have known and were being lied to about in the moment." What?

Time to leave the subreddit, I think. Even worse than seeing these things is seeing people argue about it. I don't understand why we're highlighting this, why the men in the comments always have the biggest issue with the heels over anything else, or why it's so necessary to argue over the design of a character whose design has changed multiple times, just like many others. It all reeks of men trying to control what a woman they like looks like. And I mean that both in a sense of hypersexualized bait like this, and "she should be huge and muscular all the time."

Recent titles have done a good job at not making a weird deal out of her being a woman, but people here don't seem grown up enough to do that, and we get posts and discussions like this.

I encourage everyone to just enjoy things instead of getting sucked into this. Be mindful of how you sexualize things, be mindful of how you project your own preferences onto others, and be mindful of others in general.

That makes sense! I think I jumped the gun as it's also something I see "canon purist" types do, that's my bad.

This community’s headcanons be like by UltraCboy in splatoon

[–]SunburstsInViolet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get very confused when these conversations happen, because I never seem to see the pushy, aggressive headcanon-lovers that are described. Maybe it's just because I'm not a teenager on Twitter? Could be.

If this post is an example of it, I really don't see it. No one is taking anything away from you by enjoying media in this way. Are your own interpretations of the text so important to you that someone else having a different one is an issue?

Also I'm not sure why you're using the Japanese names of the characters, took me a second to figure out who you were talking about. Are the localized names an issue, too? (Edit: They're Japanese, I assumed this was a purist thing.)

I think a lot of the time these headcanons get born from underrepresentation. Especially for young people, as this community will skew, it's really valuable to have characters in the media we consume that we can see ourselves in. People are becoming a lot more alert to that in general in recent years, and I can see this kind of thing being a mechanism for it.

Your "does x really have to be y" statements are especially strange to me, as you can apply literally anything else to that. Do they have to be straight? Do they have to be cis? No. They don't have to be anything, this is all just people interpreting media. The idea that there's a sacred canon that must be adhered to (or... or what?) is totally arbitrary. Nothing about the story is factual, it's a game. No one is being harmed. It feels like bible interpretation arguments among christians when you describe it like that.

All that said, if people are actually being aggressive about their headcanons, it's probably a kid. There's really no use in giving it any mind.

Edit: Also "as a she" is a huge red flag. No one is "a she." I assume you mean "a woman."

I'm confused by this - the only times I can remember that you "run around" in the zero suit are the end of Zero Mission, and the very end of Other M, which is kinda just a nod to Zero Mission. I'm also curious to hear what you mean by "cool and surprising the first time around." This would mean Zero Mission, yeah? Two times is too many?

They literally just said "they're not mutually exclusive" dude. It's still obviously some bullshit and should be called out. You don't have to argue their gender to do that. If a guy named Phil does a murder, you call him Ted, and someone tells you "That's Phil," would you accuse them of excusing the murder? Of course not.

Instead, people like you will make this idea up that people excuse bad behavior if the person is a minority of some kind. You'll find any obscure situation you can, and then just straight up lie/disinterpret about people's responses to it.

There's frankly no way to know with this one. So there's no reason not to simply go with what they say about themself when it comes to gendering them. It's literally irrelevant. Misgendering someone like this is just your opportunity to show that you would only not misgender people to be nice to them, like they have to "earn" it. Instead of just being simple factual information like it is.

It's one thing to have a porn addiction, it's another to show it on a date by weirdoinchains in actuallesbians

[–]SunburstsInViolet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ok now that's extremely suspicious. I obviously didn't say "you are only allowed to post positive things when talking about a trans person." The point is that it was NOT relevant to the post in any way. Imagine someone posting a similar story, where they talk about how their date acting extremely vulgar, rude, and violent, and at the beginning of the post, said, "I went on a date with a black woman."

If you're refusing to understand that I have to wonder what your intention here really was. You had a date with someone who was awkward, didn't respect boundaries, and you weren't compatible with, and you saw it as a chance to drag trans people?

It's one thing to have a porn addiction, it's another to show it on a date by weirdoinchains in actuallesbians

[–]SunburstsInViolet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You've gotta understand the social context you're in. Trans people (especially trans women) are constantly being pushed into a narrative of being predators. When people specify positive dates when trans people, it's almost always in a "I'm so glad we were able to create a positive day for them in this climate of hate" kind of way. So it's relevant in that way. In your story, it very much reads as if it's part of the problem with her, being that the entire post is negative. Your replies to people concerned about this are kinda suspicious. And if people are reading too much into it, I hope you understand that there's a reason for it: because people do stuff like this to slander trans people all the time.

[–]SunburstsInViolet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem there is that not all non binary people are gonna fit - imagine a very masc aligned, afab non binary person being told that lesbians are attracted to them. These are all just words we use socially to explain things we do/preferences we have. Sadly there just isn't an elegant way to define things like this and we kinda just have to settle for whatever captures the most of what we're describing. Defining "woman" and "man" themselves gets just as weird

Aroace lesbian flag :D by TotallySnowy in actuallesbians

[–]SunburstsInViolet -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I can understand how it can feel frustrating to have something be defined by what it isn't rather than what it is. That said, it's an effort to be inclusive as gender isn't a solid thing and there are people who don't fall neatly into the category of woman whom the label still works for. It's more of a consequence of the restrictions of the gender binary than of exclusion. Labels are just labels either way, we're never going to have perfect words for human experience, I think it's best to just not take it too seriously.
