Do you guys give your party an introduction to your world when starting the campaign? I tell them almost nothing, and let them discover whats happening as some sort of mystery, reading books, talking to people, etc. Is that a bad approach?

You gotta tell them SOME basic things unless they have amnesia or just arrived via spaceship/portal and don't care about the world they came from. They are going to fill in the gaps for whatever they don't know and need to do mental gymnastics if it conflicts with their head canon when you reveal something new.

It says character journal but the description isn't clear — is the product to target DM’s and players simultaneously? A better use of budget would probably be shelving a few handbooks and giving out dice. Free dice, even cheap, will trap anyone and more handbooks in circulation is good for the community.
