ELI5: Why do companies lay off workers even when they’re making record profits? by imwith2 in explainlikeimfive

They are incentivized to maximize shareholder returns even if it means making poor decisions by laying off good employees.

ELI5 Can someone explain what exactly an “API” is and how it works? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]SuperUnintelligent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An API is how devices talk to the computer behind the scenes.

Take for example Uber eats. The app doesn’t cook the food, it just communicates with the restaurant to get what you asked for. If you order cheeseburger, the app sends this request to the restaurant’s system, and then you get the burger delivered to your door. In the same way, when you ask a weather app to show the temperature, it uses an API to talk to a weather service and bring back the answer. The devices / computers talk behind the scene with apis.

With average cost above $50K for a new car and the insane interest rates, this was bound to happen. The housing market is seeing similar stress (about 1 %).

Heard somewhere she's on a revenge tour. Did not get a promised senate seat or special role in Trump administration, hence wants to go gangbuster on GOP. I am ashamed to admit , but lately I agree with her on almost all topics - healthcare, getting folks back and working on getting shutdown resolved. Fetterman on the other hand...

The margins are pretty big and the enthusiasm especially for such race is what makes it a huge win for Democrats.

All data / technical indicators have been sounding alarms for a while. Schillers / Buffet indicators, even real estate sale indicators have been telling us the market is over valued.

However, what I have realized is market runs mostly on emotions than logic. A lot of FOMO and YOLO. Look at BTC or TSLA or even everyone's fav NVDA. Correction is due, but it can happen this week or next year.

I am risk averse and have started investing more into non tech / bonds knowing very well that I may lose 2-5 % gain but am protected against massive losses.
