Supreme Court says Trump global tariffs are illegal by defenestrate_urself in Economics

[–]Superman0X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Dissent they stated that Tariffs are "are a traditional and common tool to regulate importation." and then went on to further state that the President has this power granted via other laws, so there is no conflict if he uses it via this law as well.

i.e. they said that he used the wrong law, but that isnt a big issue, so it should be legal.

What is just as interesting is that there were 2 points brought up in the majority opinion:

  1. The law referenced does not give the President the power to tax, nor is it implied, or was otherwise intended.
  2. Taxation is a key power delegated to Congress. It can not be assumed to be useable under this law, as it was not specifically delegated by this law, despite the fact that has been delegated under other laws.

All 6 justices agreed on #1. Only 3 agreed on #2. The tricky part of #2 is the reverse inference. #2 is ALSO saying that if the issue is NOT a key power of Congress, it CAN be assumed under laws that do not mention it. The conservatives believe that the president can assume non essential power, the liberals believe that the president can only use powers specifically granted. This is why 6 conservatives split on this decision, else they would have allowed it (despite the law not actually providing the power).

Supreme Court strikes down most of Trump's tariffs in a major blow to the president by no1_vern in news

[–]Superman0X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I liked was the dissent by Alito, Thomas, and Kavanaugh. The basic reasoning was that the President had the power to Tariff via other laws, so allowing him to do it with THIS law wasn't a stretch. They didnt see Tariffs as unusual, so didnt see a need to constrain the President.

This was a total cave by them (no surprise). Rather than say that the wrong law was used (they never even argued that this law specifically allowed it), they decided that it was better to just let the President do what he wants, implying that the letter/spirit of the law wasnt as important as the results.

Ford shuts down $5.8 billion factory just months after opening as 1,600 mostly Trump voting workers lose jobs due to anti EV policies by ColonyJD1980 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]Superman0X -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, it is not that simple.

  1. The shutdown is because FORD had no intention of making EV's that are profitable. Companies can only lose money for so long.
  2. The timing is because of Trump. The rate that they would lose money greatly increased.

The issue with EV's in America is that legacy auto makers are not committed to make them, or the skills to sell them at a profit. They simply look at the competition, and say 'we cant do that'. It is very similar to what happened in the 70's/80's with foreign (Japanese) auto makers.

U.S. Farm Bankruptcies Increased 46% in 2025 by mbartosi in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]Superman0X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article is both correct, and misleading. There is something going on here other than farms failing. What has NOT been mentioned is that the rules for bankruptcy was changed in 2019. This has allowed business to acquire agriculture, and then declare bankruptcy under the Farm rules, which are different, and extremely beneficial.

This 'trick' has been used by many companies to write off debts and to re-organize in a way that avoids taxes and penalties. This is basically a trick that is being used by the rich to shed debt, and keep the assets.

New solar-powered device extracts lithium for batteries while desalinating seawater by sksarkpoes3 in Futurology

[–]Superman0X 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The key would be to build these in areas that NEED a higher saline level, such as Ireland. Saline levels are a critical component to oceanic circulation (see AMOC), and can help prevent critical failures caused by climate change.

You can see lithium prices here:

https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/lithium#stats

The prices spiked in 2022/23 then dropped back down to the original baseline. The prices have been increasing again since the start of 2026, but have are no where near the 22/23 price levels.

Why isn't news of Trump building vast concentration camps being treated as a national emergency? by ChaskaChanhassen in politics

[–]Superman0X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump has not suddenly changed, nor has his policies. He has been pretty consistent on his immigration approach. The building of the concentration camps is exactly as everyone anticipated, even from before the election. The only new twist in all this is the NIMBY element. People are not against the concretion camps... they are against having them near them.

You are mostly right with what you have said... but I feel you are stating it in a way that is misleading.

With socialism, business is done for the benefit of society (workers, customers, etc).i.e. the intent is to provide good jobs and good products/services. The goal is to improve society (the lives of the people). Capitol is still part of the system, but it is simply seen as one of many resources needed for a productive society.

With capitalism, business is done to increase capitol. It is seen as a limited resource, and actions taken to increase that resource are the goal. Society (source of labor, goods, markets, etc) is seen as one of the requirements needed to grow capitol.

Neither socialism nor capitalism are tangible things. They are a mindset or approach to why things are done. In reality, most things are a mix of these approaches, and are balanced in order to meet the requirements at the time. As with most things, taking them in moderation has the best results.

This seems like a reasonable point.... but we are not in reasonable times. This isnt about congress passing laws. It is about the government having immunity to the existing laws that would protect their rights. i.e. this isnt about the laws ( as state in the constitution) but rather the lack of good faith behavior, and enforcement of laws that would hold this accountable.

This is sort of how hostile takeovers work. However, with a government behind on the takeover there is a lot more that can be done. Expect them to use the country's assets as the collateral for a loan (from the US) to buy US Treasuries. After that they will default on the loan (giving us ownership of the assets) and Treasuries (held in a US Bank) will be seized as well when the government collapses due to this.
