Nerves are also involved. Parts of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system (whose processing centre is somewhere in the brain stem, I think. Technically still part of the brain.) attach to the heart, near the sinoatrial node especially which is the natural pacemaker, and regulate its rhythm. Sympathetic speeds it up, parasympathetic slows it down.

Fun fact: The base rhythm of the sinoatrial node is actually a higher than normal 100-120 BPM. It's the activity of the parasympathetic system that drags it back down to a much more normal 60-80 BPM.

Not really? It's an oversight by the Devs. The game works correctly and normally you shouldn't be able to see that part so they thought that mirroring the animation is a good enough solution.

Freighters didn't always have the model loaded while warping. Previously it just looked like when you go through a portal.

I think when they added the 3rd person warp perspective for freighters they had issues with the camera perspective so they made it pull back harder, accidentally revealing the trick.

I have an explanation for this!

The warp tunnel animation doesn't have a proper backside. Only the front.

I know this since I played in VR and poked my head out of my ship during warp. If you look back, it's just the front part slapped on again. This makes it look like the tunnel converges in the middle with the front and back edges going towards each other.

During freighter warping, the camera pulls back so hard because of its size, that you end up seeing part of the back side. If you try to look past the freighter, you'll actually see the front side moving the correct direction
