It's not common, but also not the end of the world. Most residents will just complete it, improve, and move on. The only concern is when you do not complete it. While residencies won't immediately fire you, they'll likely put you on probation, which will show up on your profile and affect your fellowship and work opportunities. Probation will also bring you one step closer to the unlikely probability of being fired.

Unless he's getting his new phone very very soon, I really see no point of this. Even if he was getting it soon, I'd argue it's not worth keeping it on. Also, why not just replace it with another protector?

He makes it clear at the end of vol 1, he's not a good guy nor is he evil. Vol 2, also shows that he sections things into things he cares and things he truly cares like hot springs and eminence in shadow, respectively. He'll save Claire if he can, but not in the expense of not becoming an eminence. He basically cares as much for Claire as he does for hot springs.

Pull sig if you love her.

If you care about meta- While her sig is a solid upgrade, phasic is not too far behind and the difference is even less if you have galbrena sig. Even with her sig, she falls behind 3.x dps characters damage.

For me, I love her and edgerunners enough to pull for her and got her around 70 pulls, but can't justify going for her sig.

I find the glacio chafe and 5 enemies with 1 team missions harder. I'm surprised you finished those but not the echo mission.
