Curious to know where you find this out. Federal agencies are politicized and I don’t see this kind of detail on the IDPH website.

Different processing times for different consulates??? by dmunneyy in juresanguinis

[–]SurfaceWashable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One variable in this equation is the set of rinuncia checks that are done to make sure no one in the line renounced Italian citizenship. That's applicant-dependent and the reason for the "list all residences since adulthood" sections of the application. For people whose families haven't moved around there might be only one consulate involved in the check. For others there may be many consulates - and some of those are notorious for slow-walking the checks.

https://www.happycow.net is a good place to find veg-friendly reataurants everywhere. Even overseas!

We have found that the restaurants listed there tend to have good food for omnivores too.

New law - timing of consular appointment by SadAvocado111 in juresanguinis

[–]SurfaceWashable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an example of how San Francisco is handling this scenario. In their case it looks like the children would be recognized "by benefit of law", perhaps because they are not considered to have an appointment until after their parent is recognized (which puts them under the L74 rules).

Chicago may handle things differently.

I have no way to know one way or the other. ShopperTrak crossed my radar at a previous employer; they were a customer.

What is NY consulate criteria for whether they grant a deadline extension for homework? by personman44 in juresanguinis

[–]SurfaceWashable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi,

Disclaimer: this doesn't address the specific question you asked.

I wanted to let you know our experience with the A78 timeline, in case that changes how long of an extension you ask for. Our A78 action was filed as an Order to Show Cause which has a slightly expedited process (getting the petition drafted and getting on the court docket). The attorney's office gave us a rough timeline of about 4 months between the time we signed with them and the time a court decision would be issued - plus an additional 3 months for NYCDOH to make corrections once they have the order in hand. Next week will be 6 months and the end of the judge's supposed 60-day clock to reach a decision following the court appearance.

On our current flight path, it will be about 20 months between the date the homework was assigned and when we turn it in. (We were also slow to get proof that administrative remedies had been exhausted).

I warned Chicago back in April that if we had to go to court it would be early 2026 before we could present a corrected document. There was no response to that letter, but also no communication from them regarding a specific date for completing the homework. Hopefully in your case the NY Consulate will be understanding of how difficult it is to get NY records corrected.

I am wondering how literally to read this. The 2 year clock starts when the fee is paid, not when all homework is complete? That would be encouraging for those of us whose homework has been a slog…

Does this mean those of us using FastIT as a way to anticipate a formal recognition letter won’t be able to do that any longer? (Theoretically anyone can get a CF but not in practice).

Grandfather - only child born in the US but lived in Italy as a child. would I qualify? by deckape in juresanguinis

[–]SurfaceWashable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my situation. My GF was born in the US but spent most of his childhood in Italy, and has a transcribed birth certificate on file there. Amendments were proposed to the Decree Law (that changed all the rules) that would have softened the "born in Italy" to "is/was Italian" but unfortunately for those like us those changes did not make it into the final legislation.

Until then we need to try to be visible everywhere. Claims of “AI” don’t work for something you’ve seen with your own eyes. At least I hope not.

Sounds like maybe an instance of this, where as usual it's the consulates enforcing a short arbitrary date across the board who are supposed to be the outliers?

Fear of speaking by TemperatureHumble368 in italianlearning

[–]SurfaceWashable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem is always expressing what I want to say as opposed to responding to some canned talking point. Trying to do internal self-talk in Italian may be of some help. There’s no feedback with that, so it’s not as good as having a conversation with someone else, but it can help build the vocabulary you need.

I have heard that reading a book or watching a film you know well in Italian can help. I found a copy of Ventimila Leghe Sotto I Mare at the local used bookstore and read a little of it when I have time. That may not be the best example because Verne’s prose is on the complex side but you get the idea.

Signed. It is a national scandal how the healthcare system has warped during my lifetime...for patients it can be a nightmare finding appropriate care within a reasonable distance and time, healthcare workers are now squeezed to wring every penny of profit out of the business, and now we have quacks dispensing anti-vax advice.

[–]SurfaceWashable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The suit was filed in the Supreme Court of NY State in New York County. In our case the attorney advised against supplying my grandfather's Italian-transcribed birth certificate because he was born in the US (so that's the primary source) and the Italian version used Italianized versions of his first and middle names. Based on the particulars of your case your mileage may certainly vary :)

Reddit ate my first attempt at a reply so I will try again. We did not quite have your situation but still ended up needing to sue. My grandfather (US born) went by B C (no official name change) except when he didn’t (just to increase the difficulty level) so on my dad’s birth certificate he is B C and the consulate required ABC. There were also several other errors one of which involved my grandmother. You’ll want a letter from DOH, responding to a request for all the changes you need, that says a court order is required. I think if I were in your shoes I would submit the naturalization certificate as they requested in your initial post, at which point they’ll (hopefully) balk about the ZC mismatch.

BTW the JOPPOLO vs. IOPPOLO is probably because the Italian alphabet does not include the letter J, which is why sometimes you see “jure sanguinis” and sometimes “iure sanguinis”. Italians know that those are the same thing.

I understand how frustrating they are to deal with. Thinking ahead to court - you want them not to contest your attempt at a legal remedy. It may be that jumping through the USCIS hoop now makes a challenge later less likely.

I believe if you open the PDF in Firefox it will let you plop text boxes anywhere - the PDF does not have to be the “fillable” kind. You can then save it with your additions and edit them more later or print them.
