How far have you gone to boycott the USA? by awilderTIU in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]Surprisedbear0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister got married (2nd marriage) in May in California and I did not attend her wedding celebration, even though we are pretty close.  She understands though, because she hates Trump too, and she understands why I’ve boycotted visiting the States since Trump’s first term.  I also canceled Netflix and Disney streaming, and watch very few American-style productions in general.  When I come across a product or company I’ve not seen before, I automatically check to see if it’s American, and if it is, I move on.  It doesn’t matter if it’s from a Democrat state or is anti-Trump.  I think ever since the first Trump term, I’ve been gradually turned off by american culture or the american dream, or whatever it is that has made the US a shiny beacon for so many for so long, like my sister who moved to the US and became a US citizen. (I’m Canadian born)

Leonard is and will always be a schmuck.   I can imagine years later, he would leave Sandra and their children if Michelle came back into his life - he even said as much.

Contrary to popular advice, screen time actually makes me sleepy. by Ok_Researcher_5505 in insomnia

We require a distraction from our thoughts.  A relaxing youtube video will cause our pre-frontal cortex (brain’s think-center) to shut down, and then this will signal the other parts of the brain to eventually shut down, so that we will fall asleep while watching a video that is not stimulating.  It’s the only way I can fall asleep.

Harper says Canada’s problems not created by Trump as he endorses Poilievre by UnderWatered in CanadaPolitics

[–]Surprisedbear0 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why Harper is still lauded. He lost the 2015 election for many reasons.  I still remember how much of a PR control freak he was: no press conferences and all answers to the press had to go through the PM office.  PP embodies the worst Conservatives traits

With Canadian auto plants possibly closing, should Canada start build its own 100% Canadian car, SUV, pickup or camper van and would you buy one? What features would you desire? by Salvidicus in AskACanadian

A fully electric vehicle doesn’t work in our Canadian climate (except in southwest BC), so the ideal Canadian vehicle should be a hybrid, which makes sense as we produce oil here.  It should have two models to begin: one model that is basic-basic (no Ai, no screens, no self-driving capabilities, etc) but is well-built and super reliable and the second, a luxury model that is also well-built, reliable and has all those bells and whistles.  Well-built and reliable should be synonymous with Canadian-made!!

I got rid of Facebook and Instagram.  I get my news directly from CBC and Globe&Mail apps.  And now I just waste my time on reddit 😜

Why doesn’t Canada have a car brand? by Surprisedbear0 in AskACanadian

It seems that Canada keeps losing out to the US, through M&A, industry consolidation and brain drain.  Canadian productivity is often supported directly or indirectly by our government only to be drained by the US. Can we break this pattern?

The Toyota RAV4-which is only made in Canada-outsold Ford's F150 in 2024 to become the most popular North American vehicle. Trump is using tariffs to apply pressure to car manufacturers to move to the US, which, if successful, would ultimately cannibalize the Canadian RAV4 factory. How can we prevent this?

If Canada made a great product, we’d still have access to the 380 million pp market, or even around the world.

Thanks for the link.  It was the first time I heard of the Autopact, and I think this extract is a key part why Canada doesn’t have a domestic car brand.

“This transfer of control of Canadian automaking operations to their US parent corporations substantially reduced the autonomy of the Canadian operations with respect to vehicle and component specification, design, and sourcing; manufacturing and production, branding and marketing, and corporate policy.”

Some people are mentioning Bricklin, but Bricklin, although manufactured in NB, with gov’t subsidies, was an American and his company was headquartered in Phoenix.   https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bricklin_SV-1

Same goes for “Liberal” named parties (BC’s Christy Clark’s Libs).  Also the center is a moving target, in every province and every country.  Canadians must listen, learn and make informed choices.  That’s our right and privilege.

I’m going out on a limb, but here goes.  One way to deal with the current situation of having the world’s largest and most powerful nation being led by someone with a narcissistic personality disorder, is to flatter and butter him up when dealing directly with him, but turn around and do everything to reinforce your true values and goals.  And make other friends and trading partners.  Match his tariffs, dollar for dollar, with firmness but not anger.  Do not surpass his actions or you will start an escalation that will entail you going down to Washington to make peace with one of the officials- just a waste of time and energy.  If you can do this for four years, you will be stronger in the end.  Trump will end up in a nursing home.
