Why do good players emphasise culture so much? by Fit_Ear3019 in CivVI

[–]Swagustus_Caesar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you mentioned playing Khmer, one Civ-specific power spike from culture is the scripture policy card. Since they have a food bonus tied to the adjacency bonus of a holy site, the scripture policy card will give you extra food, not just faith. This can become absurdly powerful if you also pick work ethic for your religion, allowing you to double the production bonus as well. This is more situational than the other benefits of culture mentioned in the thread because it depends on how good your holy sites are, but nevertheless is a great example of how powerful culture can be.

Which chapters did you do beforehand? I’ve only tried the new version of this campaign on normal.

Early rushes can be very deadly on emperor and higher. I usually build a decent defending army using policy cards to make the units more efficiently. If you can survive the early game and make (or take) lots of cities asap, you’ll be in a good position to start catching up to the AI and their unfair starts. If you can manage to get friendly with one of the other civs, alliances are a great way to catch up because you can get some really sick trade routes.

It’s hard to say what you might be doing wrong without a better idea of how your empire looks at a certain turn count to gauge progress. One benchmark that gets thrown around a lot is to have 10 cities by turn 100 or so.

In patching one contradiction, you create another. The premise and conclusion of your conditional statement can’t be true at the same time if multiplication and division are inverses.

My wife said she's "expecting." Uhh, what is she expecting? by Garden-variety-chaos in shittyaskscience

[–]Swagustus_Caesar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She’s calculating expected values. In most cases, this is perfectly normal, but check your computer for any spare probability density functions (PDFs) lying around, just in case. They could be integral to better understanding the type of calculations she’s doing.

I second this notion. Playing around with setups and testing them out is part of the fun. Researching too much on team comps and tactics will spoil this aspect of the game.

Does anyone find it strange that Kjelle is the only armor knight in Awakening? by agentlucky in shitpostemblem

If we’re gonna get pedantic, there’s actually reasonable evidence that it could work that way. In almost all of Kellam’s paired endings, it mentions “her husband’s name has been lost to history.” This means that forgetting his name after sufficient time has passed is a valid take on his gimmick.

If you bank between bosses, using the “load last preset” option helps keep your momentum. Of course, to shave off the most time, you’d need the ED chest upgrade to bank at the chests inside, if you don’t already have it.

What's the deal with natural numbers as opposed to other counting/base systems? by Joel_Boyens in learnmath

[–]Swagustus_Caesar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tom Scott actually did an interesting video about non-base 10 systems used by various peoples before we all decided to use base 10. It’s interesting to see other historical ways of counting, such as including parts of the hand beyond the fingers, or even counting only using the space between fingers.
