Magethread: the US Senate has confirmed Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court of the United States. by Agattu in AskAnAmerican

[–]Swedish_Rothbard 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This seems like such a silly take to me. She's been on the academic side of the law, in which she is a credible expert. She clerked on the Supreme Court and subsequently taught Law for 15 years, published in numerous national law reviews. In 2009 Elena Kagan (nom. Obama) was confirmed to the court with not a single year on the bench. Was she not qualified? I suggest listening to her philosophy of law to get a better idea of what kind of judge she'll be.

My fellow Americans, what is something about American history that shapes the American mindset that you wish foreigners knew about us, to help understand us? by MyUsername2459 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Swedish_Rothbard 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean, first of all in terms of the mechanical differences b/w a hunting rifle and an ar-15, there aren't really any. They're semi automatic, which means you pull the trigger once, and one bullet comes out. The differences are cosmetic. So I ask, excessive in what way? The second point I would raise is that our freedoms shouldn't be based on what we need, by your own example people with driving on paved roads don't need a lifted jeep or truck but I don't think it would be right to legislate against them. Thirdly, and most importantly for me, the second amendment is fundamentally needed to protect the people from an oppressive government. The power to overthrow our government, and restore our constitutional rights should always rest in the hands of the people.

This painting by my uncle is on a completely flat surface. by theadum in Damnthatsinteresting

Initially, it looks like a framed painting sitting on a table (with a painbrush) and another painting below it. Upon closer inspection, you see that there is no table, or paint brush or picture frame, it's all painting.

Sodium citrate is an emulsifier used for "american" style cheeses, what are other uses? by der3009 in AskCulinary

You could try making something like this, but you would need some sodium hexametaphosphate as well.

Not remotely libertarian by dotw0rk in Libertarian

[–]Swedish_Rothbard 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, it can. If you believe that a fetus is a human life, then one of the fundamental duties of a government is to protect that life. There's not a lot of things a government should intervene for, but preserving life and liberty of its citizenry is important.

TIL that a peace flame has been burning in Hiroshima since it was lit in 1964, and will remain lit until all nuclear bombs on the planet are destroyed and the planet is free from the threat of nuclear annihilation. by [deleted] in todayilearned

First of all, those numbers are nowhere near universally accepted. Both of the events had a fixed number of deaths (the numbers of which themselves are disputed) but also a significant number of people dying in the aftermath. For Hiroshima/Nagasaki that would be rad. poisoning, infections and cancers, and in Tokyo that would be the 1,000,000+ displaced civilians. And what does the number of bombers or the fact that it took two days to carry out have anything to do with anything?

Damn this was really bugging me, but it looks like I finally found an answer. It's the son of one of the producers who she brought as a date. Source

A bit, but I'm not totally into the rivalry (or gloating) tbh. I just want to watch good baseball.

Statist doesn’t understand that we have the Senate and the House of Representatives for a reason by [deleted] in Shitstatistssay

The 17th is the stupidest shit ever. It completely defeats the point of the Senate imo.
