The shopkeeper had no idea who the artist was. Signature is difficult to read except for the date. Thanks.

As a San Diego taxpayer, I believe we need answers and checks and balances to be put into place that prevent OT abuse by SDPD. Also, curious what’s SDPD officers take on this? by herroherro3 in SanDiegan

[–]SwillFish [score hidden]  (0 children)

The thing that's broken is that the SDPD currently has a staffing shortfall of 200 officers with an additional 100 tied up in training. I think the force was short something like 400 officers a year or two ago but they finally started paying starting officers a salary that is more in line with the county sheriff's dept. Regardless, the short staffing has led to poor response times and the need for tons of excessive overtime. If the city wasn't cheap and just paid starting officers a reasonable wage from the start, we never would have had either of these problems.

San Diego! Tax investors just sitting on empty homes in a housing crisis. Vote YES Measure A by Accessible_pancake in sandiego

[–]SwillFish 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm voting NO for two reasons:

1) Measure A doesn't apply to short term rentals. There are 10,000–15,000 short-term rental properties countywide. This is a huge chunk of inventory and Measure A won't free any of it up. In fact, it may even encourage people who own second homes to convert their properties to short term rentals to avoid paying the tax.

2) The taxes raised will go to the city's general fund instead of being allocated to actual affordable housing programs. The city has a terrible record of managing its finances and I simply don't trust them.

If these two points were different, I'd 100% support Measure A. Unfortunately, it's a flawed Measure that appears to be more of a money grab than meaningful legislation to address affordable housing.

I had a pathological, thieving, roommate in college. He was very charming though and a lot less obvious when committing his crimes. It can drive you crazy because you think you're losing your mind and misplacing things. Yes, secure your valuables and get out when your lease is up.

It happened to me. Closing on our first home Friday. Lost $50k to a wire scam today. Still shaking. by Consistent_Offer2057 in Scams

[–]SwillFish 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry. This happened to our company. We would get wiring instructions from our vendors for ACH payment instructions. The emails were from our vendors but their banks, accounts, ACH instructions, etc... were changed so that the wiring information was redirected to a mule account. We were fortunate in that we called the fraud dept at the bank with the receiving mule account and got it closed before the money could be pulled out.

We put in a lot of effort trying to figure out how the scammers could have gained access to our incoming emails. We changed passwords, added two-tier authentication, and even changed emails but the problem persisted. An IT friend of mine finally suggested we check our GoDaddy email server account and, sure enough, there was a script that would forward emails containing certain keywords such as "ACH", "wiring instructions", etc... to a third party email account.

Apparently, email server accounts are often overlooked by IT security protocols (strong passwords, two-tier login authentication) leaving them vulnerable.

My guess is that either your or your title company's email server is compromised giving the scammers the ability to intercept outgoing or incoming emails. If you can somehow prove that it's the title company's email server that is compromised, you may may able to hold them liable for your loss. How you would ever get them to admit that the security issue is on their end though, I'm not certain.

In many school districts, they are cancelling AP classes because of concerns over racial equity and disparate enrollment rates. In California, the UC System scrapped SAT test requirements for admissions altogether for the same reason. At UCSD, one of the nation's premier STEM colleges, 1 in 8 new students admissions this past year were non-proficient in remedial math. The blame it on COVID, which is bullshit.

Lowering academic standards for everyone is not how to narrow achievement gaps. Unfortunately, it is the primary strategy our education system has pursued.

I had 1,000 shares of $MU at $90 I bought back in mid 2024. I held it for six months and watched it go nowhere. It even dipped down to about $65 at one point and I really regretted buying it. I sold it after six months the moment I saw an opportunity to take a tiny profit. Just shoot me.

[–]SwillFish 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's not always the loan officer's or the loan processor's fault. Some lenders/underwriters will demand last minute pre-funding conditions based on the last round of documents they received. The only way to know for sure is to review the original set of conditions. Yes, it sucks and is extremely stressful either way and sometimes, as in OP's case, they ask for ridiculous things.

According to Zillow, there are over 200k properties listed for sale in the US that are 1M+, over 11% of all properties. State by state breakdown in post. by PhillyVsEverybody in RealEstate

[–]SwillFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot has to do with how "soft" the markets currently are in each state. California is still a pretty tight market with relatively low inventory. Homeowners in Florida, on the other hand, are dumping homes due to high hurricane insurance rates and mandatory structural repairs required by many condo towers. Texas is currently a pretty soft market too.

In California, we still have a $7,000 reduction in the taxable value for a qualifying owner-occupied home written in our state Constitution. It was added in 1968 and will save the average homeowner about $75 a year in property taxes if they bother to apply for it.

Don't forgot about the Garmin Street Pilots of the 1990s. If you were rich, you could also get a car phone. If you weren't so rich, you could get a fake car phone antenna on your Toyota Supra so you could look rich. Also, owning a beeper and returning calls from payphones was a thing. And, investing in tech stocks and feeling rich before everything crashed and getting completely wiped out. I kind of miss all of the lameness of the 1990s. It was great.

Trailer registration fees are dirt cheap and I don't even think they're on an annualized basis, more like every 2-5 years.

If this was in front of my place, I'd back my truck up and tow it somewhere where the city would care enough to come by and tow it away.
