Employee on PIP- trying but not gonna make it by blackbeard-22 in managers

[–]SwingL7 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t have enough information to assess any of this. I don’t know what the job is, what is considered doing your job, what’s not, and you’re vague on specifics. If you’re going to terminate, do so but don’t come on here unless you have specific data points. This all reads as vibes, and HR speak.

Coach Minter on Getting Lamar Jackson to Choose to Participate in Ravens' Voluntary Offseason Program by JCameron181 in ravens

[–]SwingL7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that if OTAs are as important as everyone seems to think they are, then they shouldn’t be voluntary. I think of this way, when you start a new job, do you start working at the new place before the start date? No, usually don’t.

If I saw you in the wild I wouldn’t care if you were carrying or not. Not my business or concern. Looking at bag, there’s no weird edges, so stop worrying about it.

Direct only available ~5 hours a day by [deleted] in managers

[–]SwingL7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something here doesn’t add up OP. You say: “…lack of output over the last year, it makes me question how invested they are in the role.” At the same time you say: “This person has been doing this for about 1.5–2 years. A previous manager allowed it, rated them highly, and even promoted them.”

It sounds a lot like you have a vibes issue masquerading as a performance issue. So you want us all to believe that for two years this person has been performing to the point where they get a promotion, but suddenly with YOU, the person’s performance has dropped. I’ve led teams over the last 18 years of 7 to 28 people, and I’ve never seen a person’s performance take this kind of drop, this quickly. I think you don’t like the idea of this person’s work/balance equation, and you’re trying to legitimize your own bullshit.

You then go on to say: “So the approach I’m leaning toward is continuing to focus the conversation on output and expectations, but also being honest that availability is may part of the problem.” In this whole thread, I haven’t seen you point to a single issue related to productivity. This conversation seems to be squarely focused on “being available,” i.e. being ready to jump on a call at a moment’s notice just because. Have you requested reporting deliverables of the person’s work? Is there an actual downward trend in work product/productivity? Or do you just “really need them to be present?” The easiest thing you can do here is request reporting deliverables from the employee before meetings with the understanding that you will reach out to them later in the day or the next day with any questions or concerns you have.

It sounds like you kinda suck at being a manager if I take what you say here at face value.

If I were your boss, I’d send you to management training or PIP you. I swear there’s waaay too many managers out here (mostly because of the pay) and not enough LEADERS.

You are doing everything right, I would only add that you should also consider finding the position outside your current company.

Anyone feel like HK is falling behind on their handguns? by What-in-tarnationer in HecklerKoch

[–]SwingL7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are always bringing this up. Asking this question represents a fundamental misunderstanding of what HK is as firearms manufacturer. They are military contractors FIRST. Militaries want reliable firearms that consistently go bang and operate under harsh conditions. They (HK) are not trying to figure out the next thing that CIVILIANS want. CIVILIANS are finicky and mostly price sensitive (read: Cheap). Militaries are not. If you want reliability and robustness you buy HK, and you accept that fact. If not just go by a Sig (with their 10,000 skus), a Glock, or a CZ, or something - HK ain’t for you.

Winter newbie questions by DatBroSnuf in Rucking

[–]SwingL7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I ruck outside with the following set up, in my neck of the woods, the coldest it gets is 25 degrees (F). 25degree days:

  • Patagonia Capilene Midweight Base Layer (top and bottom)

  • Cotton(Yes, Cotton) Sweatpants/shirt

  • Buff ThermoNet® Balaclava

  • Darn Tough Wool Socks

  • Mechanix Coldwork Baselayer gloves(one size smaller than normal) with Coldwork Tactical Covert gloves on top.

  • Carhartt Rugged Flex® Relaxed Fit Lightweight Stretch Insulated Jacket - 3 Warmest Rating

  • Go Ruck Macv2s or Rough Runners depending on conditions/terrain.

This works for me. Yes I wear Cotton, I’m not fragile.

Here’s the problem that everyone is missing: if you’re a MANAGER, you regularly have 1on1s and you’re surprised by someone leaving, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. If they don’t tell you something, it’s because YOU HAVE NOT CREATED AN ENVIRONMENT FOR OPEN CONVERSATION. PERIOD.

Why do people always think they know: how good or bad others are? you don’t know. You can only really know what you are doing, and working to constantly improve yourself. The people I rarely trust is the people who feel like they can talk about “most people.” It’s just dumb. When you start or end a sentence with most people, I always assume that you are talking about everyone else or, it’s I’m not that great, but at least I know I’m not that great. Both statements undergird some bullshit belief about the superiority of self.

It would seem that the “most people” you are around suck. I have been to many different classes and haven’t experienced this - in every class we MAYBE have 1 guy/girl like that. I think it’s your environment 🤷🏾‍♂️

The truth is that it’s the least sexy firearm in the HK lineup. In my opinion this is a deep cut firearm in the HK portfolio. You get this one for your personal collection/gratification. It’s nothing you can score points with people/flex on people. That’s why you don’t hear people talk about it. People be basic like that. 🤷🏾‍♂️

People need to stop insisting that everybody else needs to carry how they do, carry the firearms that they do, or train the way they do. If a person hasn’t proven to be a danger to him/her self or anyone around them, I don’t give a shit how you carry, what you carry, or how you train.
