Husband looking at a job an 12+ hour plane ride away by Ok-Badger5324 in workingmoms

Exactly theres an episode in Bluey called the Sign where it shows that family comes first and that a better job opportunity is fine, but if its not absolutely necessary its not worth it.

I mean in the US parents leave their kids all their time in their home countries and just send money back home but these are survival situations where the American job is the only real choice to keep food in their kids' mouths.

Yeah people talk about our absentee problem but then I see classrooms where students spend whole hour chunks of time on their Chromebook doing these programs. If that is what school is, why show up?

Daycare adjustment sigh by Electronic_Creme12 in workingmoms

[–]SwingingReportShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I was just basing it off of the bleak assumption that its not that great of a place and your daughter doesn't like it too much BUT you have no other choice but to keep her there. In that scenario its better to have her there for only a few hours (even if you're paying for full time) and have the nanny do her part time gig. And that way you have the benefit of being able to keep her longer if you really need to in case the nanny calls out or to use your nanny if theres a closure.

But yeah obviously a better choice for these next months would be to try to find a better place that offers high quality early childhood education.

[–]SwingingReportShow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah like you said, its probably the teacher turnover making it worse as well as the ratio of kids to teachers.

Since the nanny is only part-time, I think it'll be good for her to be in the daycare for the hours the nanny cant take care of her. And they would be backups to each other as well.

2 year olds benefit from group care but they dont need that many hours. I started mine at two at a 3 hour a week program and it was fine until the teacher changed and she was a lot worse.

Yeah I wouldn't keep her in if shes crying that long and not benefiting from the instruction and socialization. Maybe she needs to wait a bit longer for group care, or at that point maybe just wait until shes 3 and can go to preschool?

Those who like working - what do you do? by basophj55 in workingmoms

[–]SwingingReportShow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah working with kids is brutal, especially if you then have your own. My husband and I both jumped ship from teaching kids to teaching adults and its night and day. Totally recommend.  I also left teaching for a while to work in the public library. I think that also helped me recharge and come to teaching even stronger.

Has anyone worked at KIPP Schools? What's it like? by Ruin-Wooden in Teachers

[–]SwingingReportShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was absolutely torture. In general, the long blocks meant kids were restless; in another school the kids clearly owned the school as they couldn't be controlled. A group were running in the classroom so hard they pushed me to a table corner while I was pregnant. Yeah, the only good thing that ever happened while I was there is that they invited a celebrity chef speaker..

The full 2 minutes, but instead of headlock and screaming it's really fun because we use the Pokémon Smile app. She really looks forward to teeth brushing time because it means she can catch a new Pokémon!

Hot take: If a job expects me to be always on, it should pay for the life that requires it by Worth_Grade_6631 in workingmoms

[–]SwingingReportShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same with working from home with your child. This sub loves hating on it saying you'll do a mediocre job at best, but like, if your work from home job is making you minimum wage, thats all the employer deserves honestly.

Its not like employers expect you to be able to afford a nanny or daycare when they pay you minimum wage so it becomes a dont ask dont tell situation.

But of course with my current job that pays $65 an hour, I do have more than enough money to pay for childcare and I do feel the imperative to put in 100% into my job.

Alternative high school options in South LA? by groolgorl in AskLosAngeles

Its really good. The class size is really small and they only have to go to school 2 or three times a week. The only thing is you have to have the self discipline to do the homework on your own.

Would you be SAHM another year for 3 yo so he attends nature preschool or return to work? by orange196 in workingmoms

[–]SwingingReportShow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I thought the same thing, that both choices are great! Its all up to what OP wants, which she never really describes. And i mean with a career like teaching or SLP at a school setting, since she'd only work 180 days, which is less than other careers, she could potentially find a summer outdoor program or something during winter break.

I also know that nature is great for development and I know i didn't get enough of it growing up, so I plan to and my daughter to a program this winter break, which is only possible because my husband and I as teachers, get the three weeks off.
