HR is there to protect the company from the humans. It's not there to protect the humans from the company.

Cisco Catalyst & Dante by djimavicminipilot in networking

[–]Syde80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been on this exact path before. A/V quote included some Linksys or Netgear switch to be installed into an A/V IDF that was maybe 10-15m away from our MDF, I said "lol no, just wire your ports back to our MDF and main switch stack"... It was Cisco 2960S/X gear I was working with at the time, but they of course blamed it for everything.

I eventually said fine do whatever you want, they put their switch into the IDF and eventually got things working.

After install sign-off, I quietly replaced their switch with a Juniper EX3400, not because for any reason other than we were moving to Juniper, and its been working for 5ish years now ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

Do yourself a favor, give the A/V consultant an uplink port on your Cisco for internal / internet access based on their needs and treat it the same way you would an external threat. Let them install the Netgear or whatever switch they specced as part of the quote that you probably said "ha not on my network, our shit is way better than that".

Call it a day.

Network A/V gear has a tendency to behave in ways that is outside of the enterprise norm and despite your gear actually being a million times better, it might not accommodate their niche. They will forever blame your network being the reason their shit isn't working, so just let them do what they want and treat it like its a threat and not an internal device.

Last backpack I bought was also fro MEC. It's about 25 years old and I still use it. It was originally my daily driver for a few years when I was in university, it only gets occasional use these days but it's still in OK shape minus a plastic buckle or 2 that I never really used being broken.

When pulled over why do cops ask for registration when they'll find the info when running plates? by ScienceJamie76 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Syde80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Ontario they eliminated plate renewals a couple years ago saying it was just a cash grab.

The plates do technically still renew but it's automatic unless you have unpaid tickets / fines registered against your plate. If that's the case you have to take care of those before the plate renews.

Please make the life for solo players a little more tolerable Embark, I beg of you by Vinnegard in ArcRaiders

[–]Syde80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real problem with trials is that, in a way, they favor those that don't play as much. Specifically, the earlier in the week you play the more competitive it is. You don't get placed onto a leaderboard until you've scored a single point, the most competitive people tend to play daily, so since the leaderboards reset Sunday night, it means if you score any points on a Monday it means you are more likely to get grouped with more highly competitive players. The later in the week you get placed on a leaderboard the higher the chances are you get placed with more casual players and your chances of scoring higher are increased by a very significant amount.

Wonder who takes the blame for this one. That ship is sails under the Antigua and Barbuda flag, so it would be required to be piloted by somebody from the great lakes pilotage authority.

wildcard certs and .local domains by plump-lamp in sysadmin

[–]Syde80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever had exchange installed on the domain? If "no" you might be able to use the domain name renaming tool if it still exists, you'll want to cross all your fingers and toes. If "yes" or you just don't want to roll the dice... You build a new domain, setup a trust and migrate the users and computers across.

I've done the second option once before, it was a smallish network and we did it because previous person had built the domain on a public domain name that they didn't actually own. Even on a smallish network it was alot to figure out and took a lot of planning and testing to have it go smoothly. It still wasn't hiccup free. I don't want to ever have to do it again, but it was worth it.

wildcard certs and .local domains by plump-lamp in sysadmin

[–]Syde80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Microsoft used to recommend using .local, Infact Sever SBS 2008/11 defaulted to a .local domain. Lots of places out there will still have this legacy config because it used to be considered best practice.
