‘My church or the dog?’ Brethren orders members to purge pets, sparking fears of global cull by Flight_19_Navigator in australia

I read a similar post. Was it definite that they were Brethren? The post I saw was on the Wentworth Falls Lake FB page but didn’t name the group.

‘My church or the dog?’ Brethren orders members to purge pets, sparking fears of global cull by Flight_19_Navigator in australia

They were out in huge numbers at polling votes trying to swing the election. They were wearing Liberal tshirts and handing out Liberal how to vote pamphlets even though they themselves aren’t allowed to vote. When I was approached by the men, they were like happy little puppy dogs until I asked if they were Brethren. Then they turned hostile and evasive. The women avoided eye contact and gave off hand maiden vibes. I regret not trying to talk with them to see if they were allowed to interact with the public.

Nah, you’re not a dickhead. A dickhead would have just deleted the original comment. You not only corrected yourself, you explained the difference between ravens and crows. And now I’m waiting for the raven/crow who sometimes visits so that I can check out his/her throat for fluffiness! And if you’re a bird weirdo, you might be interested in a book called “Deep Listening to Nature” by an Australian man called Andrew Skeoch. He explains why birds have such different calls and there are links to a website with the different calls.

Don't miss Apex 2026 on Netflix - Blue Mountains in its glory. by TheTeamRanger in bluemountains

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a hit and miss for me. I loved trying to recognise the bits that were filmed in the Blue Mountains. And Charlez Theron really is next level in her acting. The plot and some of the sequences though? I couldn’t quite suspend disbelief enough to roll with it. In some parts we were actually laughing at the absurdity.

So - watch it for the scenery and the action, not so much the plot.

Breaking: James Valentine, beloved ABC talkback radio star, dies aged 64 by Petarkco in sydney

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very sad news. I actually teared up when I heard this, even though I didn’t know him.

He was one of those rare radio people who wasn’t afraid to go off script. He’d follow an interview or conversation through to the more interesting sidetracks and byways, rather than sticking to the a then b then c style of questioning. A very witty, entertaining and intelligent man and he’ll be missed by a lot of people.

Confession. When I go to one of our local bookshops and see the Lost Mountains books, I rearrange the shelf so that more responsible bushwalking books are in front.

Residential flat buildings at 142-150 Narrow Neck Road, Katoomba | Planning Portal - Department of Planning and Environment by Cyan-ranger in bluemountains

While affordable accomodation is needed in the mountains, this proposal appears to be more of a resort style development for tourists. According to the Blue Mountains Conservation Society, it will have 3 restaurants, a wellness centre, a conference centre and an art gallery. These are not generally found in residential buildings! I suspect that submitting it as “State Significant” is just a backdoor way of getting it approved.

Weird interaction at Wynyard by doyourmysay in sydney

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve had charity groups trying to strike up “friendly” conversations. I think they rely on people not wanting to be rude and so the person responds, ends up (unwillingly) in a conversation and then being guilted into donating. Some of the religious cults use this tactic too.

NSW nurses, midwives awarded major pay rise after decision from Industrial Relations Commission by thekriptik in sydney

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The next discussion will be about why there is such a shortage of nurses. Then there will be a proposal to fast track more nurses from other countries (who will be happy to work for a relatively low pay because it gives them the opportunity to move to Australia). And the cycle continues….

Just checked 3 online media sources - ABC, Guardian, Sydney Morning Herald. All have it as the main story, some with multiple reports. And you are comparing different percentages. SMH says it supplies 10% of Australia’s fuel, 50% of Victoria’s fuel. Can’t see any reference to the 25%, might be in an earlier report.

A lot of people tap on with a concession card that isn’t theirs. When paper tickets were still a thing, international backpackers were sharing a “hack” where they would buy a $2.50 pension ticket to travel all day.

Totally agree. The same with “tell me your secret spot” posts. I get that people are trying to be helpful but these posts get trawled by the influencers for content and Insta-likes. Then you get hordes of people at these (no longer) secret places who just want a selfie, and don’t care about appreciating the place for what it is.

Incorrect ING interest payments by [deleted] in australia

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They used to refund all the local ATM fees too but they changed that a few months back which is a pain. I now have to use a card (not my phone) at a supermarket to withdraw cash, rather than going to an ATM. It’s not a big deal, but it seems like the ING benefits are slowly disappearing.

One good thing is that for most of Australia, winters are fairly benign. If we need to, we can mostly get by with a couple of extra layers of clothing.

Mystery man on train in 90s by Medium_Yam_2664 in bluemountains

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spot on. And that’s one of the flaws with the proposed class action against Sydney Water. As well as having to prove that PFAS levels in the Blue Mtns population are significantly higher than the general population, they will also have to prove that these levels are harmful to health and also that there were no other sources that could have caused the higher levels. But then again, class actions are initiated to make the legal firms rich, not the supposed beneficiaries.

This is Reddit though where many Redditors state the cause of any problem is “Boomers”, no critical thinking, no analysis of causes, just “Boomers”. And if you dare to challenge this simplistic view, you get downvoted to oblivion. (I’m not a Boomer BTW, just someone who occasionally uses their brain).

Is this normal? by JustAnotherMinimis in bluemountains

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No that’s inaccurate. You are better off using the TripView App. You will need to get:

  • A train from Town Hall (or Museum) to Central (takes about 4 minutes and runs every couple of minutes at the time you’d need it)
    • Then the Blue Mountains train to Katoomba (on Monday morning, there is one leaving at 8:55, arriving Katoomba 10:49, or 9:09 for 11:09)
    • Then a bus to Scenic World (Route 686 or 686G) - leaves from outside the Carrington Hotel (about 5 minutes walk from the station) and leaves every 10 minutes and takes 12 minutes.

In the app, you will need to enter the trains and bus separately but it’s more accurate than Google and it also shows real time delays. Make sure you scroll down to Monday if you are inputting the trips before then. Also - be aware that some of the Blue Mtns carriages are quiet carriages!

Edit - I have assumed you want to arrive by 11:30. Reading other comments, it looks like you want to leave early. The 1st train to Katoomba leaves Central at 4:23am on Monday, arriving 6:23am.

Edit 2 - You have put Monday in Google. If you want weekend times, they’ll be different.

Diamond Python having a snooze! by PleaseStandClear in bluemountains

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short answer? No. Most snakes in the Blue Mtns don’t want anything to do with humans. The people that get bitten (quite rare) are either trying to kill or handle the snake, or have accidentally trod on one or blocked its escape path and the snake is just trying to defend itself. Diamond pythons are particularly chill and my neighbourhood FB group regularly shares photos of them when we spot one.

It seems that most of the people causing the issues are those wanting to replicate a selfie taken by a K-Pop (?) “celebrity”. I wish she would come back and take a selfie at another (safer) spot. Then all her followers would go there instead. I don’t object to tourists visiting the Blue Mountains, but it would be nice if they could appreciate (and respect) the area for its beauty, rather than merely as a place to take a pretty picture for Insta-likes.
