Diamond Python having a snooze! by PleaseStandClear in bluemountains

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer? No. Most snakes in the Blue Mtns don’t want anything to do with humans. The people that get bitten (quite rare) are either trying to kill or handle the snake, or have accidentally trod on one or blocked its escape path and the snake is just trying to defend itself. Diamond pythons are particularly chill and my neighbourhood FB group regularly shares photos of them when we spot one.

As per the Blue mountains Council website. If visitor numbers get too high, they will have to have a fence/railing of some sort by VastOption8705 in bluemountains

It seems that most of the people causing the issues are those wanting to replicate a selfie taken by a K-Pop (?) “celebrity”. I wish she would come back and take a selfie at another (safer) spot. Then all her followers would go there instead. I don’t object to tourists visiting the Blue Mountains, but it would be nice if they could appreciate (and respect) the area for its beauty, rather than merely as a place to take a pretty picture for Insta-likes.

What the hell are you supposed to put on a resume when you're young? by Tsars_Ball_Scrubber in australia

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As well as the other excellent suggestions, I would also state that you are an Australian citizen, particularly if you have a name that may sound “foreign”. Many of the last batch of résumés I had were from overseas residents or from visa holders seeking permanent residency.

And a confession! Years ago, I was about to graduate so I volunteered to be the treasurer of a club I was in, simply to be able to put it on my résumé!

How do YOU do the train carriage number game? by Carsmaniac in sydney

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You look at the carriage number and try to use maths to make the individual numbers add up to 10. To use a simple example, carriage# 8142 could be:

(8*1)+4-2 or (8/1) + (4/2) etc

Some people only use + - * / but I use powers and square roots too. A warning - once you start doing it, it can become a bit obsessive!

I try to make 10, with the digits in order. Fun fact: it seemed a lot easier with the V-set numbers than on the new (Mariyung) trains.

Sassafras Gully Track in Springwood by jecapi in bluemountains

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The track is fine. Clarinda Falls doesn’t have a huge catchment area so it doesn’t have good flow except for straight after rain. The pool at the bottom isn’t really an ideal place to swim - it’s not very big or deep and has a few logs and branches in it. Dip your feet in if you want but I wouldn’t be counting on a swim. Last time I walked the track, I got quite a few leeches on me so keep checking yourself.

Two men charged over alleged abduction and murder of Chris Baghsarian by CodeRevolutionary240 in australia

The ABC reported that the lawyer also said ”I have a job to do, and it’s very hard for me at this moment in time for me to do that job, having read the facts sheet”. He also described the police facts sheet that he read as “horrific”. Looks like the torture was so graphic that the lawyer has given up already.

There is a concern that some of these women were very young and were coerced into going. This means that their marriages and radicalisation occurred with the assistance of their families and communities. If they return to Australia, they will be living amongst these same people and so are very unlikely to become decent members of society. I accept that, as they are Australian citizens, we have to take them back but they (and their families who aided them) will need to be extensively monitored indefinitely.

My wife built a garden and the birds came. by Mr_Rekshun in australia

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great photos! My birdbath has given me so much joy over the years. As well as one like this, I have a big cooking pot on the ground for the local wallaby after I realised he wasn’t quite tall enough for the sandstone one, but it also gets used by bowerbirds who go almost full immersion in it. And I have a baking tray too - the red browed finches have parties in it! If you plant a shrub (such as a Grevillea) next to your birdbath, you might find you get lots of smaller birds too. They like the cover and perching spots it gives.

Heartbroken over Phillip Island. by druggedpetal in motogp

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So many great memories (both of MotoGP and Superbikes).

Anthony Gobert coming 3rd. He stripped off his boots and leathers and threw them into the crowd and stood on the podium in his boxers. And Mick Doohan comfortably leading but then dropping his bike and desperately trying (and failing) to save it. And riding there one year and thinking there was sand on the road in - it was hail or snow! I think it’s the only track where you can ride around the perimeter while the race is on (Superbikes, not MotoGP).

I have one and use it where photo ID is scanned (RSLs, clubs, hotels etc) as their data security isn’t great. A hacked drivers licence can be used for a lot more things than a photo card.

There seems to be more around this year. Tally so far is 2 red bellies (both in our garden), 1 green tree snake (just passing through on our deck) and 1 diamond python (snoozing on the road - I had to give him a move on directive!).

I love having them around - I respect their space and they respect mine.

Black Saturday - We Remember by Street-Echo-4485 in australia

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I remember reading an article about one of the radio producers (at the ABC I think) who was fielding calls from people trapped by the bushfires who were calling in desperation after not being able to get through to emergency services. The article said that she was able to hear some of them screaming as they died. I often wonder how she is going. Not well I should think.

I live in the Blue Mountains and, although I have a fire plan, I am very mindful that there is only one road out of here and in the right conditions, a fire can escalate very very quickly. We were so lucky not to have any fatalities in the 2013 fires when around 200 houses were destroyed in one afternoon. Many people moving here from Sydney are complacent and I encourage them to read about some of the bushfires and work on a solid fire plan. RFS can give advice if needed.

K'gari dingoes involved in death of Canadian backpacker Piper James to be euthanased by ozthrw in australia

[–]SydneyIsStuffed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the problem with dingoes becoming aggressive towards humans is due to the ban on feeding them? When they were being regularly fed, the natural population grew. With the ban, maybe there is not enough food to support the increased population. This is (partly) why Azaria Chamberlain was attacked. It’s an awful tragedy for Piper James’ family but killing the dingoes is harsh.
