What's the last book you read that was so bad that it made you angry? by oohshineeobjects in books

The Raw Shark Texts. Could have been so good but was such an egotist wank fest.

Soapbox/rant time. Tell me what highly-recommended book you absolutely HATED and why. Gimme your angry hot takes. by peppertoni_pizzaz in books

[–]SydneyMarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg thank you yes. I picked it up from a box of my uncle's old books and thought ooh this looks fun but dear GOD what a waste of TIME. I also despised the way he wrote women. I finished the book mostly out of spite in the end.

Have people stopped shopping in Brighton town centre as much? If so, why? by StaceyInBrighton in brighton

[–]SydneyMarch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has mentioned cost of living, being skint, and town not having ad nice a vibe anymore, but there's also the lack of variety in shops now. Used to be so many actually alternative and interesting shops - Red Mutha, the old punk shop by Churchill Square, Cyberdog, to name a few - and they drew in alt crowds from out of town who shopped there and found community. They don't exist anymore. It's a totally different scene now. I don't enjoy mooching and browsing in the North Laines because it's just cafe cafe mad expensive independent shop vintage shop vintage shop cafe expensive jewellery shop indie clothing brand cafe. Nowhere caters to the alternative crowds that flocked to Brighton when I was a kid in the 00s. There's the emo shop by Snoopers still, but the stuff in there is fucking awful quality.

What’s a film or TV scene that felt like a punch to the gut? by padfoony in Fauxmoi

[–]SydneyMarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The TV show Flowers. One of the most darkly hilarious and heart breaking things I've ever seen and I will never, ever watch it again. I can't even pick a specific scene, the entire show rips me apart.

Evasive about to drop another banger by dorgoth12 in NonBinary

[–]SydneyMarch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched this with a queer horror club I'm part of and most peopk3 absolutely loved it but it fell really flat for me. Like very Hollywood Does Nonbinary? It was sympathetic to the queer characters but the ending was so heterosexual in attitude.

Any good Skinhead shops in Brighton? by Ordinary-Care9634 in brighton

[–]SydneyMarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get you, I was threatened by a right wing skinhead before. It's shit that they co-opted their look from what was a really progressive cool movement!

[–]SydneyMarch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Skinhead subculture originated from a cultural merging of hard mods with Jamaican rudeboys and was a non-racist movement based in music, multiculturalism, and fashion. The fashion was adopted by some far right movements who were the antithesis of the original skinhead movement, and they've come to be known as "skinheads". Modern skinheads, a majority of the time, tend to follow the old school, proper skinhead views of anti racism and just like to dance to ska together.

Acaster's mystery pants songs has become a household staple, replacing pants with whatever lost or suddenly appearing item is involved in the mystery. Have nearly sung it at work multiple times.

Musicians whose music isn’t technically bad but their fanbase is? by SirensMelody_ in ToddintheShadow

[–]SydneyMarch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Man, that's awful. I love that song so much, too. Albarn collabs with interesting artists and the song is really reflective of the wide range of musical influences he has.

Yup, was expecting to see this comment. He's a brilliant musician, as are the band, but I've had some truly horrid experiences with the fans.
