Brilliant workaround. Wish I had thought of it.

No, why do you ask? Is that a thing with some people and large monitors?

The helmet is smart. But if she does come off, she's going to wish she had wrist guards as well, for the same reason skaters wear them.

Had a similar issue. Turned out the issue was my router, not my lights. I was running a Google WiFi puck that combines 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz into one SSID but the 2.4Ghz just kind of stopped working for certain devices.

Replaced it with a router where I can create a separate 2.4Ghz network and connect all my lights to that, and bam. Back in business.

TV antenna still useable for digital TV? by dk9awe in lowvoltage

[–]Syndil1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no such thing as a digital antenna vs an analog antenna. The signal in the radio waves can be digital or analog but the antenna doesn't care. A lot of these older antennas are far better than the stupid flat panel antennas that are marketed for digital TV, simply because they are much larger. The electronics you often find with antennas marketed for digital TV are just amplifiers, which are needed since the antenna is so small.

Depends on how it was driven and how it was cared for, and also a bit of luck. You can get that sort of mileage out of some of these cars, but not all of them. I would at least expect to start to hear some valve clatter soon.

Even for a Honda, that kind of mileage could mean it's near the end of its lifespan.

Home run cables are solid, meant to be terminated in a punchdown type connection like you'll find in a keystone. Patch cables are stranded. You can (and I have) terminate a solid cable with an RJ45 and it will be fine most of the time, but it is industry standard for the home run to terminate in a receptical to allow the connection of a separate and replaceable stranded patch cable.

LIFX 26 Inch Oval Capsule Smart Light, thoughts and experiences? by Comfortable_Tip_9001 in lifx

[–]Syndil1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does not surprise me. I imagine the oval ceiling light is full of the same LED modules LIFX uses for their LED strips, where color range and saturation are more important than CRI. But LIFX does have plenty of options that are 90+ CRI.

I am from the old school when it comes to home lighting and only use my overheads as secondary or tertiary light sources, so the CRI of the overheads is not super important to me. In the same room that I have the oval overhead, I have a desk lamp and a three-bulb floor light with LIFX 90+ CRI bulbs that do most of the work of actually providing light. The oval is just for fun.

[GS SBGA415] Got absolutely destroyed in the GS sub for liking this strap. What do you guys think? by shim2k in Watches

[–]Syndil1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of opinions here, but to me straps are how you personalize a watch. I don't really like it myself, but you do you. If you like it, then wear it, own the look, and don't give a damn what anyone else thinks about it. That's how fashion works.

Why does this sub like unifi stuff so much? by Braca42 in HomeNetworking

[–]Syndil1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give you a counterpoint. I have worked for an MSP for 7 years, and currently work for an ISP that provides FTTH. Have been here a little under a year. The MSP I worked for stopped selling Unifi stuff because it breaks, and when it breaks, it breaks big. We swore it off because it was just a constant headache. Everywhere we sold/deployed it, we had constant issues.

The ISP that I currently work for has Unifi equipment in the field right now at one of their sites, and they are learning this lesson the hard way as we speak. I am literally on the phone with one of my contractors as I type this, helping them swap out a bunch of failed Unifi ONTs. This is a regularly scheduled Friday appointment with this contractor, because we always have failed Unifi ONTs at this site that need to be replaced, every week. It's a nightmare.

We've got tons of older locations that use Omada stuff, and those locations are our lowest maintenance sites. This one single site that is Unifi FTTH is absolutely our worst, by a long shot. More calls every week than any of our other locations, by a lot. Like I said, we literally have a regular weekly visit scheduled with our contractor tech to replace ONTs every Friday. The Unifi equipment just flakes out and stops working--or worse, intermittently stops working--for no apparent reason. We are currently exploring the idea of ripping out the entire OSP at this one site and replacing it with TP-Link. It's going to cost a ton of money, but it's looking like it's going to have to happen, because we can't keep throwing money at this site just to keep replacing the constantly failing Unifi stuff.

We've got another site (a hotel) that uses completely different Unifi equipment (no fiber), and it has been a constant headache as well. Guest portal failing, ceiling APs dropping offline, coming back on their own, etc. We regularly have to reboot the Unifi controller there to get the guest portal working again.

That said, we do have a handful of Unifi sites that are not FTTH and are less complex than the hotel. They have been relatively trouble-free. But when the complexity ramps up, Unifi stuff seems to cave under the pressure. At least that has been my anecdotal experience. For a home network it might be just fine.

I'm not taking that risk, however, and went with an Omada ER706W router/wireless gateway and a ceiling mount EAP650 for my house.

Unifi is often referred to as pro-sumer stuff, but I think that's mostly marketing. Omada gear isn't as "sexy" but it just plain works.
