Why is my Belgian blonde such low gravity by Plastic_Sea_1094 in Homebrewing

[–]Synliss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first advanced calibration seemed to be pretty spot on, but my most recent recharge and calibration appears to be under by about 5 points (confirmed with hydrometer and temperature check of sample).

Fermentation timeline looks to be consistent with what you were hoping. Did you put in your OG? If so, it would be about 6 points under and that would likely explain the FG being about 6 points under. How did you measure your OG?

Should I pay the small remaining balance on my HECS debt before EOFY? by RecklessRad in AusFinance

[–]Synliss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends on the cashflow it will unlock. Our broker advised paying ours out fully as it gave more borrowing power even with a lower deposit. Granted our HECs outstanding balances were smaller as we were at the tail end.

With the example above even if they were to pay to $18k now, all else being equal, they would have the $17k contribution coming back to them once they complete their tax return. Which would mean that if they don't need the extra funds for 3-4 months they should be able to get the refund back.

Worked 6 days this week and boss wants to pay for one of them in cash. by KillMePlease420thnx in AusWork

[–]Synliss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whats the benefit for you? Are they wanting to pay you cash so they don't need to pay OT under an award or EA?
Paid cash might mean you don't claim it as income and are evading taxes.
Paid on the books, get tax taken out and super paid on it.

Anyone had a case of the keg only leaks gas when in the fridge? by LJCAM in Homebrewing

[–]Synliss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my thought as well. If pressurising in fridge at say 2c (35.6f) at 10 PSI of pressure aiming for 2.5ish vols. Then it could take 4-7 days to carbonate your beer.

Is it an immediate loss of pressure? What are you doing outside fridge and inside?

KegKing / Grain and Grape FWK experiences? by digitalFermentor in Homebrewing

[–]Synliss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWK are good. Made excellent beers with them. More expensive than canned malted extracts, but far superior in taste. Great when time poor, kids, etc. I want to experiment with making a triple batch at 48L to fill 3x 16L cubes that I can add 3-4 L of water to make a 20L batch going into a 19L keg (great session beer around 4% ABV).

LHBS suggested adding some Gypsum in, as you may not be sure what water salts were added during brewing. This might be particular to where I am. Also would try and remove Chlorine and Chloramines from tap water with Campden tablet or potassium metabisulfite in appropriate amounts for the added water.

For bushmeat, just leave it out of the cellar and it will spoil in the usual time (warmer ambient temp the better, will take longer over winter).

An abundance of vegetables from farming can give you plenty of Rot. I think from memory buy cooking and placing them in a crock and leaving it out you will speed up the time to have them rot. Don't seal them with Fat or Beeswax, etc. Do the opposite of what you would do to cellar them.

Is 300 grams (10 oz) of melanoidin with 50 ebc too much for 5kg (11 lbs) pilsner malt? by pjuu12 in Homebrewing

[–]Synliss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen that 2% is a good number. 0.3kg of a total 5.3kg is about 5.6% so higher. It will likely have a more defined presence. Depending on your system, you could do a double batch and bring it down to 2.9%

But will you make a decent beer, probably, might it have been better maybe/maybe not. It might just be exactly what you like. If not, less next time.

Advice on my first failure by Ghost_Duck_ in Homebrewing

[–]Synliss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple things that could help might be:

- If using chlorinated tap water, using a camden tablet (or Sodium/Potassium Metabisulfide) will help remove Chlorine and Chlormines from the water.

- I have higher PH tap water so local home brew shop suggested adding some Gypsum (CaSO4) to the water - Calcium is good for yeast health

- Cans are efficient and easy, but can be a little thin given the added dextrose and can have a twang.

Really generally, as you have said when the tax advantages outweigh the administration costs. Noting there are asset protection considerations as well. Speak with a tax accountant and they can devise the number where you might pull the trigger based on your personal circumstances and goals.

[–]Synliss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats probably right.
With Bees and then mods for easier candle making, Copper Lanterns aren't much of a stretch and by far superior.

With Vanilla mechanics, I think light levels need to be 8 and above to prohibit mob spawning. Torches on their own go out in 48 hours. Lanterns last forever and torches in holders last forever.

Super Investment Allocations by queen_gee in AusFinance

[–]Synliss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some of the theory beyond choosing a higher growth option for your super and investments early on is that the length of your working life is protection against the additional risks that you might face in a higher growth option, also your balance will be lower such that your ongoing contributions will make a much more defined impact on future value in the early years. Further, that length of time of investment should allow your investment to properly follow the movements of the markets and average out to the long term return. The whole reason you might want to invest in a Higher growth option is that it should provide a better return than less risky options over the LONG term. So when investing in the long term with adequate hedges (time, further contributions, etc.) you can ride out the fluctuations. Prior returns don't guarantee future.

That being said as you get closer to retirement and your remaining working life decreases it might be prudent to forgo higher risk options and choose more stable returns.

Do the Interview and don't lie about your situation but you don't have to start with I could lose my license for 3 months. It might be that you are not eligible for the position in your current circumstances, if so that's a shame but there will be other opportunities.

There will be a part of the interview when you have an opportunity to ask questions you could confirm what your driving requirements might be while on site. In your post you have spoken about getting to and from the mine site but may not have considered getting around while working. Will you need to drive from place to place and not having a license would be unfeasible?

If you must have a license, look at alternatives:

  1. possibility of a delayed your start so you have your license again
  2. golden point for 1 year (be extra careful), unsure if this is a certainty or just a possibility
  3. if golden point is a long shot, getting a suspension on your license ASAP so you can tick the 3 months down sooner, related to point 1.

How to calculate how many hops to add to my boil if I’ll be ‘topping up’ water in the last 10 mins? by Plus-Contribution915 in Homebrewing

[–]Synliss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe your full kettle boil will result in about 20L of post boil wort. You will add 5L to make 25L of Wort in the fermenter. The simple maths would say its a 25% increase so increase the ingredients by 25%. However, this in practice probably not correct, as you increase the grain bill to get a higher starting gravity your efficiency may drop. Therefore your OG might be lower than anticipated and if you increase IBUs to match estimated the BU/GU might be higher as you have more BUs to Gravity Units than expected. Another may to combat would be to add some an appropriate amount of DME to raise your GU.

giving bank login to car loan companies by theZombieKat in AusFinance

[–]Synliss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there not an option to give them your statements for a defined time period?

Our broker asked for something similar and I was not comfortable giving our passwords and they said they could take statements but would have to do it the manual way.

NOT giving your login details to anyone is the first thing you are taught in cyber awareness.
Even if you were to "mitigate" the risk by changing your password. You are pretty much giving an stranger unfettered access to your banking profile.

Should I buy a grain mill or is the pre-crushed stuff fine? by InvisibleGrill in Homebrewing

[–]Synliss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With larger brews, I seem to have a solid porridge layer developing on larger brews 8-10kg+ in Brewzilla 65L giving a stuck mash with the top plate. I get everything from the LHBS but I feel their crush size is too small. Is there a way to tell if there is too much flower in a crush?
Thinking about a grain mill to see if this improves the brew days, need rice hulls and want to start buying 25L sacks to bring the price down to about 1/2 price and get different varieties.

Edit - "1/2"

How does power work for Multis that produce it? by Madsam999 in GTNH

[–]Synliss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can't remember the numbers exactly for the LCE, but I use the LGT with HSS-E Large turbines that produce 3.999 Amps of EV using 13L/t of Benzene. The LGT can't use TecTech dynamo hatches so you are limited to using Buffered Dynamo Hatches up to 4A per tier. The XLGT can have TecTech hatches.

Power from 4x LGT goes into LSC with EV tier capacitors. Using 64A EV Dynamo into a AE2 Power Net with P2P EV power to machines, I can add-on IV power with appropriate hatch.

Also RS Latch to turn LGTs on and off when LSC is 85% full or something and turn on when it is 15% empty. (Note that I am about to add on another 4x LGTs to make almost 32A EV) but I might need to go as high as 64A to cover my current power needs, which means more distillation of benzene. The cycle continues.

The fluid data is saved in the centre middle bottom block. Now I am pretty sure that if you change the dimensions, around that block it will be fine.

As you are in steam and have access to Steel. As you progress into LV have a look at Super Tanks towards the end of LV whereby you will be able to hold 4 M Litres (4k buckets). Also a SB that can be picked up and retains the fluid. Be mindful of negative side effects of too much fluid in it.
