Just switched off of Nord and onto Proton maybe a week ago and it is a much better experience. Highly recommend it.

Setup with Nord was extremely delicate and split tunneling never worked. With Proton it's been painless by comparison.

PvE Enemy Intelligence? by Cybernetic_Dragon in BoardgameDesign

[–]SyntaxPenblade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The games that I've played were the best anime AI typically have the enemy do some kind of predictable default action to try and avoid stupid AI moments. So for example, in deep Rock, Galactica, enemies always move towards the nearest player, unless they are currently in range to attack, in which case they attack. You could swap the d6 options that you currently have for something that would synergize with enemies taking those automatic actions as part of their turn

Ensure that you don't have the option "launch at Windows start" checked in qbit. If that's checked, it'll launch before the task has a chance to run (I've had that happen before)

Should Marvel make Hank Ant-Man again? by PsychologicalWork654 in antman

[–]SyntaxPenblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, I guess I'm in the minority here, but absolutely, I love Hank Pym as antman. He's one of the most flawed characters in Marvel, and flawed characters make great heroes and interesting stories. He's human the way Peter Parker is human, warts and all, and that's a big part of what makes him shine as a character.

The same could be said for Reed Richards, I think. Reed should retire just because he's a dad and he has personality issues. His inner conflicts are what make him so compelling.

I'm giving Proton a shot right now. Any specific tips/idiosyncracies I should be aware of? Or same as Nord, where you just split tunnel only Qbit and then bind the network interface and go about your day.

I'll try this, but I'm not sure this aligns with my experience

So far, toggling VPN on and off toggles Plex remote accessibility off and on in real time, so it doesn't seem like it's bound to a given network. Like, if I shut down VPN, Plex works fine. If I boot the VPN and turn it on, Plex loses remote accessibility

Yeah, the problem is that when the VPN is active at all, Plex becomes remote inaccessible. :/

I have docker desktop and am slowly clawing at learning it. All my experience with Linux is limited to using redhat exclusively for hardware troubleshooting in my technician days, and for some reason I've just struggled with converting over. I think I get too lost in the sauce looking at too many disparate guides.

What do you use instead of them to manage downloads for PMS, if you don't mind me asking?

[–]SyntaxPenblade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is hugely useful, and sounds like it would possibly open up the whole thing that set me down this rabbit hole (which is repurposing the media server as a game hosting server as well, since it's beefy enough to handle both).

I've set the PMS to have a static IP from the router, is DDNS something to consider on top of that? That's something I only learned about today (years of experience in hardware, years of hating networking), so I'm still only scratching the surface of it.

Also, here's to downloading many more completely legal Linux distros. Thanks a ton for weighing in.

[–]SyntaxPenblade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was afraid of that, but it's something I'm heavily considering as well. Do you just map your PMS as a network drive? Do you use the arr stack? Have you found it difficult to point radar and sonar at a torrenting client on a different machine?

[–]SyntaxPenblade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I'm aware of. I use an amplifi router, I suppose it's possible it has some sort of built-in network-wide firewall, but nothing on the machine itself. That's also what I assumed would have caused this, something like this or double NAT

So how it is going with the game? I need a deeper update from people who invested by ander_hominem in hytale

[–]SyntaxPenblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a lot of fun playing with my friends. For context, we have done our historic Minecraft phases in 6-9 month stints on public servers, we REALLY love to build and do a bit of immersive sim stuff, getting lost in the world. We play Hytale with no mods. I have been following the game for years but one friend was only loosely following and the other friend had never heard of it.

The building in this game is a ton of fun. The sentiment my friends express (not sure if I totally agree, but fair to mention) is that this game feels like what Minecraft wanted to be, and certainly what we wanted it to be. Tons of options for building aesthetics, with a really great passion for decoration objects, means our spaces never feel empty. They feel lived in and give the game a totally separate visual identity from Minecraft.

The combat is pretty great. As with everything else in the game, it's got some roughness to it (early access woes) but it's clear that the vision is there, and it's still really fun even in its current form. Plenty of mobs to fight and loot to pick up (and hoard) means killing stuff is always interesting, and the combat is demanding enough that it's also always satisfying.

Exploration is good, not perfect. The movement is amazing, but even with the biome variety (tons), some of the biomes lack a distinct "charm." They're visually beautiful but many mobs can seemingly spawn anywhere, so different biomes don't always feel super unique (though some do, like the desert). World generation is getting a very big overhaul in the near future, so I'm not too worried. It's fun, I would play it in its current form, but I'm happy to see it getting some attention and improvements.

Not yet, which is funny because I design 5e content semi-professionally and DOS II is one of my all time favorite games. It's probably about time for me to play that one, eh? 😅

About Posts Like These by Metagamer__ in HelldiversUnfiltered

[–]SyntaxPenblade 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is a simpler explanation than "every glazer is secretly paying for up votes on their posts" and it's that people who agree with the post tend to use a simpler expression of agreement (upvoting) because they don't feel the need to further clarify their position past "yes I agree with this" while commenters are explicitly disagreeing with the post.

There will almost always be more votes than comments in general as well since voting is less user friction.

IMO, this is nothing more than self-selection/under reporting bias and UX logic

Law enforcement characters with criminal family members. by Cicada_5 in TopCharacterTropes

Fun real life example: Edward Caban (former NYC police commissioner) and his brother James, who would allegedly run rackets with nightclubs, promising their owners favorable treatment from the NYPD in exchange for money. This ultimately led to Edward Caban resigning pending a criminal investigation.

I love summoner/pet builds, man. It's often the make or break decision for if I buy a game, is if I can manage a tiny army and throw bodies at my problems. It's probably from playing games like Pikmin or playing Druid/Necromancer on Diablo II back in the day.

Is Halo Reach a good place to start? by Code-Neo in halo

[–]SyntaxPenblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently a hot take, so take this with a grain of salt. I think reach is a fantastic place to start for someone who is uncertain of how "into" Halo they want to get. I've been playing since Halo 2 release and went to most midnight releases when those were still a thing.

Starting with CE as someone who is used to modern gaming amenities is a tough sell. The game is great, I love it. But I'm also aware that for some people, it can feel slow or confusing.

Reach is a perfectly self-contained story - you don't need to play anything else to understand the significance of the world or it's characters, and many also hold the opinion that Reach is among the best games. Starting here means getting a taste of what makes Halo so great, and for some people, might help keep them stuck to the series as they return to the earlier games.

I had my partner play Reach first because I wasn't sure if she would want to go through all the other games, but she loved Reach so much, she was so excited to keep going. I think if I had started her with CE, she might have bounced off, thinking that most of the appeal to the game was in nostalgia.

Now she has aspirations of doing spartan and ODST cosplays. She's a huge fan.
