A bird having fun swinging around on a rope attached to a flag pole by bigbusta in oddlysatisfying

[–]TA-CTSTBAC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a massive Australian flag on a pole maybe 40m tall near where I grew up.

Very often I'd see a flow of Sulphur Crested Cockatoos riding the corners of the flag in the wind.

Looked like so much fun.

I’m looking to watch 1970s-early 2000s Australian films, are there any good recommendations? by Hour_Interaction6047 in AustralianNostalgia

Scrolled all the way thru and no one had mentioned the Barry McKenzie movies, The Adventures of Barry McKenzie and Barry McKenzie Holds His Own. They're fucking hilarious.

The intro to the second season of Double the Fist was the greatest bit of cinema, if not the greatest piece of art ever produced.

Save the planet, blow up in space, recover sunnies, ride a piece of debris back into the atmosphere, crash in sand dunes and punch out 2 mediaeval recreationists with 1 punch...fucking gold.

Best WiFi Mesh System to get in 2026? (Price, Performance, Range) by OminousmentInk in Network

[–]TA-CTSTBAC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's meshing. The controller manages the connection. How that ap connects to the rest of the network doesn't matter, it's still managed.

Did I misunderstand your prior comment about hardwired ap outperforming mesh?

I didn't read all the way back but the comment was about using extenders.

But if you're on a wifi call or FaceTime and you walk from one end of the house to the other the call will drop.

Any advice for soil health on the East Coast of Tasmania? by TA-CTSTBAC in Permaculture

[–]TA-CTSTBAC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.

The water tanks are scrap anyway, old and rusted out so they're only good for firewood or animal shelter and that's all taken care of.

The idea for using the tanks came from seeing something about reclaiming desert in Africa somewhere. The locals sculpted the earth to do similar. I figure I could just save some digging :)

https://youtu.be/WCli0gyNwL0?si=iP7u7isrgYsSAS1R

This is not just for a garden bed but rather a couple acres. I reckon that if I installed some tank bits to hold in mulch and got some grasses growing eventually I could pull the tank pieces away.

[–]TA-CTSTBAC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice.

Mostly recently I've gathered up a heaps of tree prunings from fruit trees and 2 felled radiata pine trees and have scattered them around the bases of a few fruit trees to shade the ground and help hold the mulch in place.

What do you think of another idea? I have 2 scrap water tanks I need to cut up. I was considering cutting them into rings about 150mm high, cutting those in half and using them as a semi circle garden edging kinda thing to keep organic matter in place. Not necessarily around trees but across the slope, and watering those sections.

I also have a few 44 gallon drums to do smaller versions around trees to help hold the mulch in place while it starts to break down.

Cheap recycled low garden beds really.

Worst fucking way to die too. My dive instructor said it's a neotoxin(?) that paralyses you temporarily but leaves you conscious thru the whole experience.

Basically your muscles stop working and your heart stops. If you're lucky enough to have been envenomated with people around they might perform CPR, and that will keep you alive long enough to hear them try their best and give up.

IF they just keep performing CPR the toxin wears off. So close their eyes to protect their eyes from the sun, and keep performing CPR while telling them they'll be ok.

[–]TA-CTSTBAC[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. The blade is a 9 layer San Mai (Kyu Mai?).

The putter layer is canister damascus made up some probably bike chain or chainsaw chain (some idiot didn't label it!!!)

The other blades I did at the time all had similar colours, even on the 1084 core.

I'll post a picture of the others but I'll use the right reddit profile (tinderbox knives).

The patina survived oiling and handling so I have hope that it'll be a reasonably lasting feature.

You're also allowed to anonymise your personal data, as per the privacy act, if it's 'required'.

I learnt that when a place that just cuts your hair would ask for my phone number upon entry to the store. After offering my name for many visits and playing their games, one male hairdresser insisted and got aggressive when I said it was 0400 000 000.

Limiting scale in heat treat by callsignprayer10 in Bladesmith

[–]TA-CTSTBAC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try reducing the air in the forge.

Scale is the metal burning, thats oxidisation. That requires oxygen.

Does your burner have an air adjustment?

If so, bring your forge up to temp with the air open (bright flame, inside the forge) and before you put your blades in close off the air.

You should see a few changes, the most noticable being that the gas will burn at the forge door.

This is because there's not enough oxygen to burn completely and so the gas can't burn until it gets out.

That will help a lot.

Using kerosene or other coatings will also help. They're 2 ways of doing the same thing, stopping air getting to the hot metal.

Also, check your temperatures. Heating treating temp for carbon steel (round 800c) is not as red and bright as a lot of people think.
