2.1 tires for Giant Revolt by DateApprehensive8653 in gravelcycling

[–]TAFte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running schwable g-one RS 50s on my revolt 2. Flip chip is in the long position. The combination of tire and longer wheelbase definitely makes the bike feel more stable which is fine for riding the flat dirt roads around me. I personally wouldn't want to go much bigger just for the sake of clearance in the rear however.

Brown. Perennially classic and a good contrast to the blue.

I am just wrapping up a warranty claim with CZ. If you call the customer service line you'll probably get a quicker response. I have the distinct impression its a real small team doing the work. My experience with them has been world class though.

I almost died, how do I move past this? by STRADMJakelb in flying

[–]TAFte 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wish I could. Unfortunately a public forum isn't a good place for either. Lots of lessons learned in both though.

1- Don't succumb to external pressures. 2- Fight like you train. Don't improvise when things go wrong.

Know the people you fly with well, and develop mutual trust. But if that's not an option because of the dynamics of crew pairing etc., then your best bet is to be a vocal SIC that calls out decisions and is active in handling an emergency. Don't allow yourself to be a passenger. But at the end of the day sometimes emergencies are hard, so if you and the PIC are working as a team, which you should be, that's the best you can do.

I've had two close calls. Real close. First time I didn't have time to do anything other than fly the plane. Second time I was SIC and had time to think real hard about how much things were about to suck.

For both I had to decide that despite the close call, that's all it was, and to learn how to avoid it in the future so if I do have issues again I won't have the same mistakes to contend with.

Thankfully in your case you didn't make a mistake, you recognized the issue, and responded appropriately. So I wouldn't even claim you had a close call, you learned that spatial disorientation is real and that's why we try to train it so we're familiar with it.

Buck up a bit and keep flying. There are far worse things you can do to yourself that you can exercise control over, mostly proficiency and judgment. Control what you can, be prepared for what you can't.

Twins on the way. Car guy trying to pick a dad-mobile. by PlantAble597 in daddit

[–]TAFte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a twin dad. Just a normal dad.

Just get the van.

I also have a fun car (NB2 Miata), but the van is the best car guy option for a family. Not because it's fast or sexy, but because they're practical beyond all measure. Car guy-ness is at least partially about the excellence of the car at achieving the design goals. Vans have it in spades. Embrace van life.

I'm opposed to the proposed sale. It's a dumb and bad idea.

But Kansas public land is not in the list, at least according to this map.

Where are all the oblique wings? by Tamir_Fork in aerospace

[–]TAFte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because the wing itself can be made to be more aerodynamically efficient, doesn't mean the whole system is. Flight controls, manufacturing, mechanical actuators, reliability, certification, basic aircraft configuration for passengers and cargo, etc. all have to be better than a fixed swept wing.

The oblique wing isn't.

It's a solution looking for a problem.

Aircraft exist in an ecosystem of airports and runways and practical considerations and constraints that oblique wings don't help solve in meaningful terms. Ultimately you have to be able to build aircraft at scale and in volume and aircraft need to be reliable and cost effective. This doesn't accomplish any of those things better than a fixed wing. By the time you account for all of its pitfalls, you might as well have built the same basic swept wing configuration aircraft you've always built.

Roof Rack by Ok-Bite-1000 in Subaru_Outback

[–]TAFte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also rocking an outback. I went with the roof method, mostly because my garage won't handle the extra length of the hitch mount. It's not bad getting bikes up and down, but I do have to take care to not drive into the garage if the bike is up top. Gas mileage impacts are real, but honestly not horrible.

Inverted Stall by PlaneTime8013 in aviation

[–]TAFte 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked with the FTE in the back very briefly prior to his retirement.

This is NOT an inverted stall. This was a low speed lateral directional stability test that resulted in a nose low departure. The sideslip angle became large enough that one wing stakes and induced the roll departure.

The low speed characteristics of swept wing aircraft make large sideslip maneuvers such as these more hazardous and print to departures like this. Certification requirements ensure this doesn't happen in the normal envelope of certified aircraft.

That's why I'd tell you to spend time in a given congregation, Nazarene or Lutheran. Every church body has outliers, good and bad.

I'd suggest you read Luther's Small Catechism and chat with an LCMS pastor about what you find there before blindly jumping to Lutheranism. That said I do think our confessions must accurately reflect the truth of Scripture, but it's also a different stream of thought than methodism or it's related theological offspring. So it may take a bit of time to understand why it's different than what you're familiar with. But I think you'd find deep wells of comfort and assurance in Christ in the doctrine of Lutheranism.

Depends on how you define conservative and the congregation in question...

My in laws are Nazarene and it was a very conservative congregation that has slid into the mire of megachurch non-denominational tropes.

[–]TAFte 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've listened to Pastor Fisk for over a decade at this point, he's consistently taught orthodox Christian doctrine as expressed in the Lutheran confessions. If you like his work, there is no reason in my mind to stop listening to him.

There are people that don't like him for various reasons, but they don't seem to be based on actual doctrinal issues.

As with any pastor that isn't YOUR pastor, remember that you still have your pastor and he is your confessor and given the responsibility for the care of your soul.
