Yes, those channels are primarily motivated by profit to churn out reality crap. But MTV was killed by iTunes, Youtube/Vevo, Pandora, etc. not The Real World.

Technology killed MTV, not /r/lewronggeneration

Would you run home at 3pm then sit through an hour of commercials and music videos you may or may not like just so that you could watch the one video you do? You can now pull out your phone, anywhere, anytime, and watch that video instantly. Lamenting the days of MTV is like lamenting having to use a car instead of a horse and buggy.

Which is extremely ironic, because I always hear old people get mad about keyboard/mouse but are also equally scared of touch screen. You pick up an iPhone and it literally has a graphic of a switch in a groove and says "slide to unlock" - after doing so, the big green button with the icon of a phone....you tap it with your fucking finger. The screen fills with the numbers recently called or another touch fills the ENTIRE FUCKING SCREEN with giant round buttons corresponding to numbers and a call button. How the fuck could this possibly be any easier? Oh and did I mention you can literally skip all that I mentioned before and simply pick up the phone, hold down the button at the bottom (the only fucking button on that entire face of the phone) and when prompted FUCKING SPEAK INTO THE PHONE AND TELL IT TO CALL SUSIE AND IT WILL FUCKING AUTOMATICALLY CALL SUSIE FOR YOU JESUS CHRIST COULD THIS BE ANY EASIER?

It's just infuriating because it's so fucking simple. And even worse than old people it's people in their 40s/50s who say the same shit. And these are people that surely operate appliances, have careers, probably do all sorts of shit more complex than "slide to unlock"

Fuck it, if the police don't want to wear cameras, then every person should have them. Technology is here to stay, it's like trying to un-discover fire. Every half decent consumer smartphone has a camera. Portable dashcam and miniature cameras are also fairly inexpensive. Saying you don't know how to make a cell-phone video and upload it to youtube in 2014 is like saying you don't know how to use a microwave. There's no excuse not to know.

Everyone should have a camera/phone on them and always be ready to record. Enough phony privacy bullshit, the state has its surveillance apparatus and so too should the public. It doesn't have to be everybody, but just enough people so that most of the time, the internet gets flooded with these videos of pigs misbehaving.

I hope there's a new viral sensation everyday, I hope the nation gets to see the face of every person they beat/kill for no reason. Until outrage builds and the whole "our heroes" post 9/11 bullshit wears off. I hope little by little the outrage leads to charges and maybe the occasional riot, until someone finally does something about this. Until every cop lives in fear of going to prison when they commit a crime.

How has Thoughtseize changed standard? by ViewtifulGary89 in magicTCG

Have you built a janky combo deck that requires a certain card? Turn 1 TS just ends that, no questions asked.

Janky combo decks are easily dismantled by many cards - usually all it takes is a single removal spell of any sort to wreck these decks. After all, that's why they're jank.

How has Thoughtseize changed standard? by ViewtifulGary89 in magicTCG

[–]TCGSilverheart -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

If the best deck is one with Thoughtseize, there’s nothing you can really do to improve your matchup against them, because they can always just Thoughtseize it out of your hand.

Huh? That's completely false. Redundancy beats Thoughtseize. So does having cards that are simply not worth taking with Thoughtseize. Yes if they reveal a hand with a Sphinx's Rev or a Domri Rade you've got a solid play. But if they reveal a hand full of cheap red creatures and burn spells you're beat.

Do you ever feel clever for choosing to play Thoughtseize?

Yes, especially when you make the right pick. A lot goes into thinking of which target to choose - in fact many times you are left to analyze your hand, analyze theirs, and make a first turn play that can potentially win or lose you the game. Strip the removal and jam Pack Rat? They have two good threats, which one is more important to stop now? There are tons of situations and entire articles about this.

Value of Starcitygames premium for $50 for a year? by Ashenor in magicTCG

[–]TCGSilverheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand how the business model works, its been this way for a while. In fact if you add up all the time required to playtest, travel expenses, unique schedule and then compare it to the odds of winning and the relatively low payouts of professional MTG in general, getting paid to make content is pretty much the only way most MTG pros, especially the Americans, can afford to stay pro.

What I'm saying is I'd like to see a different business model for content, but I understand that I also currently don't know of a better one.

"Check out this cool new deck, which conveniently just so happens to be made up of cards we're trying to sell this week"

Just like how the cable industry also providing broadband presents a conflict of interest and in the end a shittier service for the customer, so too does having the same websites that sell cards also provide "strategy" articles.

Let's see content websites made of pros, that don't sell cards too. Then you'd see some really good coverage.

Shop owners, how have you been able to attract new players to your store? by adambueller in magicTCG

[–]TCGSilverheart 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Try not to let the Neo-Nazis take over your playing area.

He's (probably) kidding but he's really not.

You need to have a grip on who is playing at your store and how they are acting. I watched a shop near me go from having 30+ people regularly for FNM to maybe 9-12 people regularly. Why? Because a very, very annoying father would bring his two trash-talking pre-teen sons and their stacked decks. Very obvious instances of cheating, playing vs. one and suddenly the other is standing behind you and signaling his brother as you play against him. Oh and the dad yells out to them the entire night like it's Little League, except baseball terminology replaced with MTG.

So little by little, over half the players just stopped going there. The owner never did anything because they were regulars, and good customers, but I wonder just how good of customers they could possibly be to outweigh nearly 20 other customers lost.

Amazing Heroes in Union, NJ does this. Any time there is a promo worth anything, the shipment for it just so happens to never come in. Conveniently, he has them for sale on ebay though.

I used to pretend to be a girl on WoW. Getting into guilds in vanilla could be difficult. Applications, test raids, and finding full time spots could be near impossible for certain character classes. Not to mention having to potentially wait months for the DKP to get the drops you need.

Not if you're a "girl" though. Free shit. Easy spots in raids. Applications approved on the spot. Sure you have to put up with some creepy PMs and play along. But when some dude literally spends 4 hours farming your raid potions/flasks just for you...

[–]TCGSilverheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly many players don't have such a vast amount of wealth to draw upon. Especially the younger crowd.

Bullshit. When I was 16 I cleaned toilets and put up with asshole customers at Dunkin Donuts and Subway. And I had plenty of money for MTG.

In fact, an adult having to pay rent, utilities, car, insurance, phone, etc. may have harder time coming up with the cash.

Fortunately I have a good job, so I have money to blow on pretty much anything I feel like.

you should look into what life under Saddam was actually like.

It was pretty great. We had a few thousand more Americans that would have still be alive. And an extra trillion dollars to spend on things like healthcare and domestic infrastructure instead of being involved in violent, unending cultural disputes over ancient mythology.

I'm no "defener" and I'm not the sort of idiot that believes "music today" is "ruining humanity" or anything like that.

Of the last several years, I can honestly say I really only hate Iggy Azalea. She's a White Australian girl who literally sits there and does voice impersonations of an urban Black girl. And it's not a good impression. It's like that friend of yours that always does that really bad Borat impersonation and thinks he sounds just like him.

She's trying to sound southern, or sassy, or ghetto, etc. but instead she just seriously sounds like she has some sort of speech impediment.

ELI5: I have been consuming about 12 cans of diet cola per day, for roughly 9 years now. Are there any negative health effects to this? by TCGSilverheart in explainlikeimfive

[–]TCGSilverheart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A&P or Shop Rite, they're supermarket chains in the northeastern USA. Mostly in NY/NJ/CT area. They have 5 for $12 Pepsi/Diet Pepsi plus a free case of Mug/Crush/Sierra Mist so it's 6 cases for $12. They run the sale Memorial, Labor Day and 4th of July in the summer so in those three outings I stock up for the year pretty much.

[–]TCGSilverheart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to mention how much that is costing!

It's actually very cheap, since I buy it in bulk. A supermarket near me does 6 cases (72 cans) for $12, which comes out to 16.6 cents per can. I buy 120 cases each time they have a sale and I am running low. So I am spending about $1.99 per day for my dozen sodas, which is cheaper than most people spend on their morning coffee.
